YMMV / Crossroads (2002)

  • Awesome Music: Most of the music is good...the fan-favourite part though is when Britney sings freestyle and soulfully to Ben while in the shack with the piano in Arizona.
  • Critic-Proof: Granted, mostly this was on account of it having such a low budget, but it made just short of $65m worldwide on a $12m budget, in addition to strong sales of the accompanying soundtrack, making it a very profitable venture despite the bad reviews.
  • Cult Classic: Especially for Britney fans!
  • He Really Can Act: Well she. While Britney's performance was criticized when it first came out many critics and audience members have re-evaluated her performance and concluded that, with what she was given, Britney Spears did a fine job in the movie, especially after the Free Britney Movement.
  • Retroactive Recognition:
    • Two people now famous for their roles in the Star Trek franchise had their first major film role in this film: Zoe SaldaƱa and Anson Mount. Ironically Mount was such a cipher in this film the Razzies rather cruelly cited him as "whatever-his-name-was" when he and Spears were nominated for Worst Screen Couple.
    • This was also an early film for Taryn Manning who would go on to star in Orange Is the New Black.
  • Special Effect Failure: Mimi has to be six months pregnant in-universe, yet her belly bump is inconsistent from shot to shot.
  • Strawman Has a Point: Kit. Did Mimi really think she would become famous in spite of being heavily pregnant simply because she had a good voice?
  • Tear Jerker: Whenever Lucy cries, Mimi and Kit also have moments.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: A common criticism of the movie is that the hard hitting issues it attempts to cover don't get properly built up to or developed making the movie come off as emotionally manipulative more than anything.
  • Uncertain Audience: Britney Spears reportedly wanted a film her tween fan base could enjoy, but also a serious drama that dealt with hard-hitting issues. Thus you get a film that deals with Teen Pregnancy, date rape, Parental Abandonment, and losing one's virginity - but has to sanitize said topics to make them palatable for tweens. Thus you get a movie that is too mature for younger viewers, but too twee and cliched for older people who'd be able to appreciate its messages.
  • Vindicated by History: Since the Free Britney movement a sizable amount of people have come out in support of the film to the point it became popular enough to be re-released in theaters two decades after it had come out.
