YMMV / Count Dankula

Go To

  • Anvilicious:
    • Dankula is an avowed Libertarian, and can be quite outspoken when it comes to his anti-government / pro-individual liberty beliefs.
    • He's also quite fervent about his belief in free speech absolutism. Whenever a topic relating it comes up in a video, expect Dank to devote significant time to why it's important as a fundamental right.
  • Bizarro Episode: His video on Bob Ross is a lot more calm and respectful in tone than his other Absolute Mad Lad videos. Dank himself even admits that he doesn't really consider Ross a Mad Lad and just wanted an excuse to make a video on him because of how much respect he has for him.
  • Designated Villain: Otis in the Ken Allen video. The only thing he seems to have done wrong was compete with Ken for the attention of the females, but even then it was Ken who was moved into Otis' enclosure, so by human logic Otis had the right of a prior claim.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • His pug Buddha, who of course is the (in)famous nazi pug that lead to Dankula making worldwide news.
    • In terms of Mad Lads, Marvin Heemeyer (Killdozer) is the most popular by far, and he gets referenced in several later videos. Ken Allen is also extremely popular among his fanbase.
  • Fountain of Memes: Dank himself. His thick Scottish accent and tendency for cheeky remarks have sparked many a meme.
  • Memetic Badass: Ken Allen was already seen as this by visitors to the San Diego zoo years ago, but Dankula's video has made him this to many on the internet.
  • Memetic Loser: Ken Allen's rival and Arch-Enemy Otis. Thanks to Dankula referring to him as a "pussy-ass bitch", he has, almost literally, become quite the Butt-Monkey.
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Good luck finding someone who didn't find out about him from "M8 Yer Dugs A Nazi", in which he teaches his girlfriend's pug to lift his paw to the phrase "Sieg Heil!". The video got him in trouble with UK police, sparked protests and debates about freedom of speech, and ended in him gaining a £800 fine. Any mention of it will make people bring up the topic or accuse him of being a "Nazi".
  • Tear Jerker:
    • While Dank is far from the saddest of boys, the videos where he discusses being found guilty for a "hate crime" and being charged 800 pounds really had him rather solemn, with a bit of his usual snarky self. The latter video of "The Price of Freedom is £800" where he quietly muses how despite the case not going for his favor, he's more relieved for whatever stress is gone from his shoulders and his family.
    • The part where Dank talks about Greyfriars Bobby in his Burke and Hare episode.
    • The Bjork Stalker episode. The episode deals with mental illnesses and how it can affect a person very badly.
    • There's a sense of rare Tranquil Fury and sadness when Mark discusses the Glencoe Massacre. Considering it was another dark example of Scotland being beaten down by UK power and Mark's own love of Scotland, it's hard not to see why.
    • While most his Absolute Mad Lads go out in a blaze of glory not everyone is so lucky, and Dank himself is almost misty-eyed himself at the slow, sad deaths of the likes of Bob Ross and Ken Allen from cancer.
    • While Dank makes it clear that what Ted Kaczynski did was abhorrent and self-defeating, he at least found the views on modern society well thought out, and even pondered how things would go differently had Ted not been screwed over through his upbringing, especially when skipping grades and being experimented on while in Harvard. Even while Ted never forgave his brother David for turning him in, the latter tried to deny it at first before the telltale writing quirks of the manifesto became too much, and even to the day Ted died, David tried to reconcile with the brother he had always looked up to.
  • Ugly Cute: His pet dog Buddha. Being a pug, this is obviously a given.
