YMMV / Andrew W.K.

Go To

  • Anvilicious: Andrew only got more and more explicit about motivating the listener to be the best person they can be, and by You're Not Alone he's even doing spoken-word interludes about positive partying and embracing the challenges of life. He's basically the Mr. Rogers of metal by this point.
  • Awesome Music: YOU BETTER GET READY TO DIE! YOU BETTER GET READY TO KILL!
  • Broken Base:
    • After he announced to his followers that he's a brony, many fans did not and would not accept it.
    • His involvement in promoting CN Real also counts as this.
  • Chorus-Only Song: "Party Hard."
  • Crazy Is Cool: Andrew's a little nuts - it's just part of his appeal. Exhibit A: you know why he has a broken nose on the cover of I Get Wet? He smashed his own face with a fraggin' brick. Yeah.note
  • Epic Riff: It feels like Andrew's pumped out a bajillion of these. "Party Hard" features two of these prominently, each of which could've easily been their own song.
  • Epileptic Trees: There's a conspiracy theory about Andrew being a character played by multiple people and that he's actually a Stealth Parody or just a corporate ploy to make money. The "evidence" is that he seems to have a different appearance after 2005, and that the original Andrew W.K. disappeared and was never seen again after being taken off stage at a show. Easily disproven by comparing the cover of ''I Get Wet'' to the photos on the right. It's the same guy.
  • Fandom-Enraging Misconception: A minor one, but still equally controversial: Fans will not be impressed if one brings up the infamous Antifa twitter post on how Andrew (who has supported Democrats in the past) has "right-wing ties"... for hosting a show on a conservative talk network. Not only do fans find it borderline ludicrous but it can be seen as overly Conspiracy Theory reaching, so much so that the original Reddit post was locked due to fans and the aforementioned Antifa account arguing with other users over "the truth".
  • First Installment Wins: I Get Wet, forever his calling card.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: All of his albums have charted highest in Japan, and Japan has received several exclusive albums.
  • He Cleans Up Nicely: Normally, he's covered from head to toe in dirt, sweat, and party and could use a shower and a shave. Yeah.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Most of the attention Andrew gets is for the loud party songs. It's usually the dedicated and exceptionally curious who have heard his more textured recent stuff.
  • Memetic Mutation: Andrew WK is practically a walking meme by himself.
    • The bloody I Get Wet album cover. Andrew made it an Ascended Meme with his merch section.
    • PARTY HARD
    • The rather silly conspiracy theory has led to people satirically making pictures with "evidence" that a person was switched with another person after a certain year, similarly to Paul Is Dead.
  • Nightmare Fuel: As a teenager, he wrote a song called "My Destiny" for a girl he had a crush on. Said song led to her getting a restraining order against him. He only made the song available to listen to in 2010, as it became a rather dark Old Shame. In his own words:
"Aged 17, I set about writing a song for a girl I was obsessed with. When she heard it, she called the police. Have a listen and you'll understand why"
  • Signature Song: Unquestionably, "Party Hard".
  • Squick: Sometimes he'll tweet stuff like this.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: Subverted in that you will be wide awake from listening to this man's music, but damn if you won't be in a great mood when you do!
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Reviews of The Wolf were mixed since the overall tempo of the album was slower than on its more famous predecessor, I Get Wet. To say nothing of Close Calls With Brick Walls, which was more of a sprawl of Andrew trying many different sounds with few concessions to fans of his original sound, that more or less met an indifferent reception. Then again, its troubled release hurt it.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Andrew's silky-smooth baritone would've been a perfect accompaniment to the piano pieces on 55 Cadillac, but the album is entirely instrumental.
  • Vindicated by History: Pitchfork's review of I Get Wet upon release was a dismal 0.6. However, the tenth anniversary received a far warmer 8.6, along with a Best New Reissue award.
  • What Could Have Been: His planned tour for 2021/2022 was cancelled after he got engaged to Kat Dennings.
  • Win Back the Crowd: You're Not Alone from 2018 was warmly received by critics, his best-reviewed record in many years. A lot of this reception had to do with Andrew still doing his positive partying during a very turbulent social and political landscape.
