YMMV / Alps Story: My Annette

• Adaptation Displacement: Many people who have seen this show in the past are more familiar with this version than its source material.
• Awesome Music: The Japanese opening theme and ending theme which were both sang by Annette's seiyuu Keiko Han.
• Base-Breaking Character:
  • Annette herself. There were some viewers who dislike her for being Jerkass and couldn't forgive Lucien for so long. On the other hand, others find her to be interesting for having a well-rounded personality and character development.
  • Dani as well. Italian viewers tend to dislike him for his resemblance to fellow hated character Sunny, a blonde whiny kid with an annoying voice ^note they even have the same voice actress in the Italian dub. On the other hand, others like him for being nicer than his sister, and especially more sympathetic towards Lucien.
  • Even Lucien gets this to a lesser extent. While he has a great Character Development and many consider him the real hero of the story, a few viewers can't overlook how bratty and immature he is in some episodes, especially the way he acts towards Dani and Klaus in the infamous episode of the accident and later how he made pranks towards his classmates (including Annette) with Jean and Anton.
• Cult Classic: The show isn't successful on its ratings and popularity, but those who watched it tend to agree it's great.
• Fan Nickname: Annette herself received some nicknames in Japanese fandom like "Queen of Destruction", mostly for breaking Lucien's wooden sculptures.
• Fanon Discontinuity: Some viewers skip the Lausanne arc due to its use of fillers. Not helping that part is not included in the novel version.
• Germans Love David Hasselhoff: In some European countries, many viewers still remember this anime as part of their childhood.
• Hilarious in Hindsight:
  • In the Episode 6, Annette said to her dad that she's like a big sister to Lucien. Annette and Lucien's Japanese voice actresses Keiko Han and Eiko Yamada would later work on Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari, with the former would be played as Meg while Jo is voiced by the latter.
  • Annette's dad mentioned in Episode 10 that ermines aren't supposed to be taken care as pets. Cue Romeo's Blue Skies, where the main character Romeo has a pet ermine named Piccolo.
• Mis-blamed: Klaus is sometimes blamed by some viewers for causing Annette and Lucien's relationship being broken and Dani's near death experience. In reality, ermines like him aren't supposed to be taken care of as pets as they tend to be agressive. Annette's father Pierre even lampshades about it in Episode 10 after he saw his children adopting it.
• Narm:
  • Near the end of Episode 15, the dramatic scene where Annette and Mrs. Morel found out that Dani is alive becomes less serious when a background music pops in which sounded too happy. The music also showed up again in Episode 45 when Annette cries to Dr. Givet's arms after she found out that Dani's operation is successful.
  • In Episode 21, the part where Monseiur Peguin tells his story about his past life to Lucien gets amusing when he is seen wearing nightgown while doing that.
• Never Live It Down: After a lot of Character Development, Annette's habit of destroying Lucien's woodcarvings made a good amount of viewers find her actions to be difficult to forgive, even if she's done something good since then. To the point that some Japanese viewers nicknamed her as "Queen of Destruction" because of it.
• Nightmare Fuel: Seeing the evil version of Annette in her dream at the start of Episode 30 is just plain disturbing.
• Ron the Death Eater: As per her status as a Base-Breaking Character, Annette tends to have her bad qualities exaggerated and ignore her good ones, being either out of hate of her character or a running joke.
• Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: For a children show, it's pretty dark. Parental Abandonment, a tragic accident, a crippled child, cruel Kick the Dog moments, while the two protagonists are petty and often unlikable, and spend most of the series on bad terms, with one of them actively hating the other.
• Toy Ship: Annette and Lucien get a lot of Ship Tease in this version. So much that the lyrics of the French opening (long version) mentions them kissing after their fights.
• Vindicated by History: The anime version didn't do well on its initial run, largely due to the book version being hard to find in Japan and its themes are difficult to understand for children. When it was fansubbed, it has gotten a kinder reception and gained a sizable number of supporters for its storyline, unique drama and explaining the psychological aspects of characters well.
