Rascally rabbit ransacks relationship of rambunctious robbers.

Bugsy and Mugsy is a 1957 Looney Tunes Cartoon, directed by Friz Freleng.

Bugs Bunny has moved into an abandoned building due to rain flooding out his burrow. He soon discovers his new home also happens to be the hideout of the gangsters Rocky and Mugsy, who arrive after their latest jewelry heist. Determined to teach the crooks that crime doesn't pay, Bugs puts together a couple of manipulative tricks to sabotage the villains' partnership.

This cartoon contains examples of:

  • Apple of Discord: Bugs makes himself one to stir mistrust between Rocky and Mugsy and sabotage them.
  • Ash Face: Rocky gets this when Mugsy unwittingly blows up his "cigarette" (a stick of dynamite).
  • Brutish Character, Brutish Weapon: Rocky, on seeing Mugsy with an axe, grabs it and attacks him with it. (The axe was placed in his hands by Bugs.)
Rocky: Doity scheme didn't work. Did it?
Mugsy: [laughs nervously] That Rocky. A million laughs!
  • Explosive Cigar: Bugs swaps Rocky's cigarette with a stick of dynamite, then tricks Mugsy into lighting it and making it explode.
Bugs: [imitating Rocky] Hey, Mugsy! Come 'ere! Gimme a light!
Mugsy: Okay, boss! Gee, I'm glad yer not mad at me no more! [BOOM!] Awwww, now you're mad at me again!!
  • Frame-Up: After making Rocky paranoid of Mugsy, Bugs makes Mugsy look suspicious by planting incriminating evidence on him.
  • Fun with Homophones: This happens when Mugsy is admiring the results of the jewelry heist.
    Rocky: Yep. All 14 carats.
Bugs: [looking out of a hole in the floor] Carrots? Carrots? Who, what, where, where? Who, where, where? What? Where? Who? Where?
  • Hollywood Magnetism: Bugs puts roller skates on Mugsy, then uses a magnet under the floor to move Mugsy around... and slam him repeatedly into Rocky.
  • I Can Explain: Whenever Mugsy gets "busted" trying to sabotage Rocky, but it only makes Mugsy more suspicious, futilely stammering, "Bu-But Boss!" each time, but Rocky, already paranoid of him, is having none of it.
  • Karmic Trickster: Bugs, as usual. He plays the pair against each other by convincing Rocky that Mugsy is out to get him.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Bugs thwarts Rocky and Mugsy, with neither of them being any wiser to his presence.
  • Neon Sign Hideout: When the police show up and arrest the crooks, Rocky thinks Mugsy has ratted him out. It turns out that Bugs has put up a literal neon sign reading "Rocky's Hideaway".
[Rocky and Mugsy are in the back of the police car.]
Rocky: [glaring at Mugsy] I wonder how they found out where we was?
Mugsy: But, boss... but... but... but... but...!
[Rocky punches Mugsy to the floor of the car, then starts jumping on him. Cut to Bugs, sitting on the steps of the hideout and holding a "Do It Yourself" manual.]
Bugs: Isn't it wonderful what you can do with some wire and a few electric bulbs?
[The camera moves up to show the "Rocky's Hideaway" sign flashing from the roof.]
  • Oh, Crap!: When Rocky spots Mugsy with an axe, after hearing that Mugsy plans to kill him with it.
  • Paranoia Gambit: How Bugs gets Rocky to turn on Mugsy.
[Bugs places the receiver of a candlestick telephone on the arm of the chair where Rocky is dozing.]
Bugs: [into phone's mouthpiece] Rocky? Am I getting through to you, Rocky?
[Rocky's cigarette, hanging limply from his mouth, springs into a horizontal position.]
Bugs: They're sayin' you trust your pal Mugsy with that suitcase of jewelry. [Chuckles] Don't make me laugh!
[Bugs pulls away the receiver. Rocky opens his eyes and looks around. He shrugs, then closes his eyes again. Bugs puts back the receiver.]
Bugs: Look at Mugsy layin' over there, pretendin' he's asleep. And all the time, he's thinkin'... gettin' ideas...
  • Suddenly Shouting: Rocky suspects Mugsy of sawing the floor underneath him (despite his having tied up Mugsy and locked him in the other room).
Rocky: I don't know how ya's done it, BUT I KNOW YA'S DONE IT!
  • Spanner in the Works: Rocky and Mugsy successfully evade the cops and get ready for their next job, until Bugs takes matters into his own hands to sabotage their plans underfoot.
