The Super Paper Mario Movieverse Tumblr webcomic is a retelling of Super Paper Mario set in same canon as The Super Mario Bros. Movie by the artist Pianokantzart.

While the comic does still follow a majority of the main plot of Super Paper Mario, due to it being set in the Mario movie universe, it does contain numerous differences, like Donkey Kong taking Bowser's role given that Bowser in the film is more wicked, Toad playing a more prominent role, and most notably, the final confrontation with Mr. L and Dimentio has numerous changes to it.

The comic can be found here, where a summary breaking down the timeline and differences of the comic can be found here.

The webcomic contains examples of:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Almost ends up being the case with Count Bleck, who almost slips up and calls Luigi "Mr. L" again despite no longer going by that identity.
Count Bleck: Mr.-...Luigi...is still deeply connected to the Chaos Heart.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: While Dimentio was by no means a nice guy in the original game, he still mostly covered his bastardly personality through his sheer charisma. While Dimentio does still display his Faux Affably Evil traits, he is shown to be much more cruel here, manipulating and psychologically abusing Luigi to continue having him on his side and eventually breaking him to the point where he takes control over his entire body. It gets even worse when he forces Luigi to watch as he nearly kills Mario using his body, and goes on to blame Mario for Luigi's death.
  • Adaptational Villainy: Likely due to the entire fact that the movie version of Bowser doesn't really contain his redeeming traits and is depicted more as just a straight-up villain as opposed to the pragmatic and self-serving Nominal Hero that he is depicted as in the original Super Paper Mario game, Bowser doesn't join Mario and co.'s side to save all worlds, unlike the original game. Instead, Bowser actually joins Count Bleck's side, though for the sole sake of eventually overthrowing him and taking the Chaos Heart itself.
  • Alternate Continuity: The entire webcomic is a retelling of Super Paper Mario if it was set in the same canon as The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
  • Alternate Identity Amnesia: Mr. L seems to have no idea who Luigi even is, despite the entire fact he is him. He even claims he doesn't even know a person named Luigi.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Luigi. Dimentio states that the Dark Prognosticus's prophecy predicts that "one in green" would be the one who brings destruction to all worlds, so he manipulates Luigi to his side and eventually, turns him into his vessel in order to bring forth the cataclysmic prophecy.
  • Ascended Extra:
    • While Mr. L wasn't necessarily a minor character in the original game (in fact, anything but), he was still sent to the Underwhere a little more than halfway through the game and when he did return, it was incredibly brief as Dimentio would just use him as a Meat Puppet. In this comic, however, Mr. L actually sticks around until Mario and his party enters Castle Bleck and has one final battle with Mario at Dimentio's side. While may eventually become nothing more than Dimentio's vessel like the game, his role is significantly bigger than it was in the game.
    • While Toad does play a pretty prominent role in the film, this isn't so much the case in Super Paper Mario where he only appears in the intro to alert Mario and Luigi about Peach being kidnapped yet again. Here, he actually joins Mario's party and does what he can to help them save all worlds, despite the entire fact he was not mentioned in the Light Prognosticus.
  • Ax-Crazy: Dimentio yet again. A deranged jester who wants nothing more than the annihilation of all worlds and seems to take fascination and pleasure in taunting Mario and Luigi for their failures, reminding them that everything will soon be destroyed.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": After breaking free from Dimentio's brainwashing, Luigi tries to continue pretending he was Mr. L so he could trick Dimentio into letting his brother go. This, however, does not fool Dimentio, who can tell it is an act and finds it quite foolish.
Dimentio: Oh Mr. L... silly, naive, stupid Mr. L... you are so entertaining... but you are a terrible actor.
  • Big Bad: Dimentio is the former henchmen of Count Bleck who would end up taking the Chaos Heart for his own ideals, manipulating a brainwashed Luigi to his side and using him against his own brother.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Mario for sure, wanting to do anything he can to save Luigi from Dimentio's hands. He even mentions that he doesn't want to fight his younger brother.
  • Blood from the Mouth: After being viciously beaten by Super Dimentio, Mario begins coughing up and drooling his own blood.
  • Body Horror: Luigi's body goes through a lot thanks to the floro sprout and the Chaos Heart. The floro sprout grows out of Luigi's head and begins to grow across his entire body, before Dimentio uses the Chaos Heart to transform him into a monstrous vessel to end all worlds. Later on, after returning to his original state, he begins to lose the color in his hair and black floral-like patterns begin to coat his body as the Chaos Heart continues to corrupt him.
  • Cooldown Hug: Mario hugs Luigi and apologizes for failing to save him, thinking he was entirely lost. This, however, is what finally gets Mario to break through to his brother.
  • The Corruption: Luigi goes through quite a bit of this throughout the comic.
    • The floro sprout acted as a Puppeteer Parasite for Dimentio, allowing him to influence Luigi's actions and even control him.
    • When Dimentio uses Luigi as his vessel, Dimentio's sprouts begin to consume Luigi's subconscious, intending to take full control over him.
    • Last but not least, even after Dimentio is gone, the Chaos Heart still has an effect on Luigi due to how intertwined they had become, draining Luigi's hair of color and leaving black floral patterns growing on his skin. According to Count Bleck, if nothing is done about it, the Chaos Heart will corrupt Luigi entirely.
  • Damaged Soul: Played with. While Luigi is resurrected through the power of the Pure Hearts, his memory appears to not be quite the same, having a hard time remembering anyone other than Mario or anything that had happened within the last couple of days. It is soon made pretty clear that the Chaos Heart has taken a number on him, especially once its power begins to consume his body.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: At least hinted at with Bowser. When Bowser finds out that Mr. L/Luigi is more likely than not going to be the one who brings destruction to all worlds, he tries to kill him.
  • Evil Gloating: Dimentio does a lot of this, whether or not that is him continuing to be a Manipulative Bastard who wants to keep Luigi on his side or putting the blame on Mario or Luigi that everything that was transpiring was their fault.
  • Festering Fungus: The floro sprout that Dimentio had placed in Luigi's head soon begins to cover his entire body in a painful transformation.
  • Forced Transformation: Dimentio forcibly uses the floro sprout to transform Luigi into a vessel for himself in an agonizing manner.
  • Hate Sink: Dimentio in this webcomic is emotionally and psychologically abusive toward Luigi, manipulating him to his side and when he starts to disobey him, Dimentio puts him through a Painful Transformation into his new vessel, taunting Mario as he does so. Inside of Luigi's head, Dimentio continues feeding Luigi lies, claiming he is killing his own brother while forcing him or that he truly amounted to nothing. It becomes very apparent that Dimentio isn't even actually trying to hide his truly Ax-Crazy nature unlike the game, he just revels in the idea of seeing others suffering in his sick game.
  • Heel–Face Turn:
    • After Mr. L remembers that he was Luigi, he does what he can to keep Dimentio from killing Mario. He eventually makes a full one by consuming the energy of the Pure Hearts and using them to defeat Dimentio.
    • Count Bleck seems to also change for the better, no longer wanting to end all worlds and makes it pretty clear to Mario and his friends that he wasn't going to do anything to them.
  • The Hero: Mario and Luigi both serve as this, given that they eventually gain the upper hand over Dimentio and defeat him.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Luigi knows that the Pure Hearts will likely destroy him due to be intertwined with Dimentio and the power of the Chaos Heart, but knowing this would be the only way he could both free himself from Dimentio and defeat him, he would allow it. While Luigi does end up surviving, his memory may not have.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Dimentio for the majority of the final fight has the upper hand against both Mario and Luigi, brutally beating down Mario and getting close to killing him while tormenting Luigi inside of his head, wanting to take full control over him. However, once Tippi comes in with the Pure Hearts and weakens Dimentio, Mario and Luigi both make a pretty strong comeback, with Mario taking on Dimentio in the physical plain while Luigi took on Dimentio inside of his own subconscious, eventually defeating him.
  • Humongous-Headed Hammer: Mr. L uses this during his fight with Mario. Eventually, Mario would use the same hammer during the final fight with Super Dimentio.
  • "I Know You're in There Somewhere" Fight: Mario's confrontation with Mr. L counts as this. As Mr. L continues to attack Mario, Mario tries his hardest to reach out to Luigi, knowing he has to be in there somewhere.
  • If I Wanted You Dead...: Count Bleck makes it clear to Mario and his party that he has no intention on attacking them and taking an unconscious Luigi, pointing that if he were to do that, he wouldn't have come alone.
  • Kill the Ones You Love: Dimentio pulls this with both Mario brothers. As Super Dimentio, Dimentio finds sadistic satisfaction in the whole idea that he was using Luigi's body to kill his older brother, and even forces him to watch as he nearly kills Mario in cold blood. However, after being beaten, before dying, Dimentio would laugh at Mario as he would point out that by killing him, he had likely killed Luigi as well, and he would be forced to live with that.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Dimentio continuously manipulates Mr. L into staying on his side and aiding him in his plans, wanting him to discard his former identity.
  • Meat Puppet: Luigi becomes this for Dimentio after he transforms him into a giant Luigi-Dimentio-like monster, being used as Dimentio's vessel to become the king of all worlds.
  • Mental World: Luigi is thrown into one after Dimentio takes control over his body, where Dimentio continues to consume his subconscious and force feed him lies.
  • Monster Clown: Dimentio is a monstrous jester who relishes in the idea of the end of all worlds, manipulating Luigi to his side and having him nearly kill his own brother.
  • Omnicidal Maniac: Dimentio wishes for nothing more but the destruction of all worlds and creating perfect new ones, taking sadistic glee in the idea of wiping out everything only to rule over a bunch of new worlds.
  • Plant Person: Super Dimentio mainly, now that his neck appears to be more floral-like. Dimentio also has a bit of this in Luigi's subconscious, appearing to be growing out of a flower.
  • Puppeteer Parasite: The floro sprout in Luigi's head acts as this, being a parasite implanted in his head by Dimentio's magic after Mr. L agrees to a partnership with the evil jester. This allows Dimentio to influence Luigi's actions as Mr. L, before fully transforming him in a painful manner.
  • Reduced to Dust: After being taken down by Mario, Tippi, and Luigi, Super Dimentio turns into a pile of dust.
  • The Walls Are Closing In: After Dimentio traps Mario inside a glass box, he begins to have the box shrink around him, intending to crush him to death.
  • Tears of Joy: After Luigi gets revived, Mario bursts into tears that his brother ended up being okay despite everything.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Dimentio has a bit of one once he realizes his plan is falling apart. He begins trying to convince Luigi that he needs to think rationally as this is no longer just his head, but when both the Mario brothers begin to take Dimentio down, he begins to shut down, not sure how his plan was falling apart after everything else went so smoothly. In a final act of villainy, Dimentio would allow the Chaos Heart to continue with its goal to destroy all worlds.
  • You Leave Him Alone!: Mario to Dimentio after he begins to have the floro sprout cover Luigi's body.
