YMMV / Super Paper Mario (Movieverse Webcomic)

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Dimentio, remaining about as monstrous as his original counterpart, is the Ax-Crazy former minion of Count Bleck who would betray him and take the Chaos Heart for himself, intending to destroy all worlds and rule over new ones remade in his image. Learning "one in green" was a pivotal part of the Dark Prognosticus's prophecy to end all worlds, Dimentio would manipulate Luigi to his side in hopes of using him to fulfill it. When he realizes that Luigi is no longer on his side, Dimentio uses the floro sprout he had placed in his head and the Chaos Heart to painfully transform him into his vessel. As Dimentio takes over Luigi's body, inside his subconscious, Dimentio forces Luigi to watch as he nearly kills Mario in cold blood, putting the blame on Luigi for nearly killing his own brother.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • Mixed in with Tear Jerker. After Mario hugs Luigi and apologizes for failing him, Luigi seems to begin to remember who he once was. While Dimentio did gain back control over Luigi and had him beat down his brother, Mario would still persist and once again remind Luigi that he was his brother. This would be enough to have Luigi remember who he was.
    • Tippi coming in and saving Mario using the Pure Hearts to weaken Super Dimentio. After quite the brutal beating Mario had just received, this may have been enough to enlighten a spark of hope.
    • Luigi seemingly being revived through the Pure Hearts and Mario's love for his brother certainly counts as this. While it is still sad that Luigi doesn't have his full memory back, he still remembers Mario for the most part, and it is amazing that he still lives despite everything he went through. Count Bleck even points out that it is impressive he survived so much.
  • Moral Event Horizon: If Dimentio had not already passed this due to gleefully planning the destruction of all worlds, then he certainly passes this when he brutally transforms Luigi into his Meat Puppet, having the floro sprout painfully consume his whole body before using the power of the Chaos Heart to further transform him.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • After Mr. L brutally beats up Mario, Dimentio comes in and traps Mario inside a glass box. Dimentio continues to have the box shrink around the plumber, and with Mario having no way out, Dimentio nearly crushes him to death.
    • When Dimentio realizes that Luigi has returned back to his former self, what does he do? He makes the floro sprout he had implanted in Luigi's head grow, and soon, begin to consume him. As it begins to cover his entire body, Luigi screams out that it hurts, and Mario can do nothing but watch his brother be transformed before his own eyes, making this combined with Tear Jerker.
    • Super Dimentio remains about as eerie as he was in the original game, but this time appears to be a more floral-like monster who crawls around.
    • Super Dimentio's Mental World can certainly count as this for a number of reasons:
      • Luigi's subconscious appears to be a completely black void with numerous flowers beginning to grow around it and Luigi, really just showing the progress of Dimentio taking over Luigi's mind.
      • Dimentio in this subconscious is also rather unnerving. He appears as a literal Plant Person and his color scheme has become much darker. The bright colors on his mask are also gone, with both sides being shades of black and his mouth and eyes have turned green. Even ignoring that, it almost looks like his face is splitting in half.
      • Dimentio continues to manipulate Luigi into giving up on everything, lying that Mario truly never cared about him and that his best moments were when he was in danger. As Dimentio continues manipulating him, the plants in Luigi's subconscious begin to consume him.
      • As Super Dimentio continues fighting Mario, he starts getting the upper hand and nearly kills him. And what does Dimentio point out to Luigi? He was killing his own brother. To make it even worse, he forces Luigi to watch before delivering the final blow.
    • Super Dimentio for sure does not hold back during his fight with Mario, brutally beating him into a bloody pulp who begins to cough up his own blood.
    • Though Dimentio may be defeated, Count Bleck points out that the Chaos Heart is more likely than not going to continue its quest to end all worlds thanks to Dimentio lending it his fair share of power. It really only gives Mario and co. a certain matter of time before it is too late.
    • To make the situation even worse, while Luigi may be freed from Dimentio, he is still connected to the Chaos Heart. As color drains from his skin and black floral patterns begin to consume him, Count Bleck points out that if the Chaos Heart isn't stopped soon and they don't leave Castle Bleck, Luigi will forever be corrupted by it.
    • The way Dimentio treats Luigi throughout the entirety of the comic is quite disturbing, reeking of vibes of a psychologically abusive relationship. He constantly tells Luigi lies by saying that he truly amounts to nothing and that Mario truly doesn't care about him, seeing him as nothing more than a block in his path. He even goes out of his way to tell Luigi that his best moments were when he was in danger.
      • To make matters worse, Dimentio tells Luigi eventually to "Let go." While it is never explicitly said in the comic, it seems to be implied that Dimentio explicitly told Luigi to let himself die inside his mind.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Mario's fight with Mr. L. Mario knows for a fact that he does not want to fight his brother and even refuses to, begging him to at least remember something. It gets even worse when Mr. L refuses to remember his past. Mario continuously begs Luigi to let him help him remember who he is, but Mr. L continues to fight.
    • When Mario finally disarms Luigi, he hugs him and apologizes for losing him. He apologizes for how he would constantly let him down and how he would continue to mess up no matter what. Yet despite all of this, Luigi would continue to be there for him, and without him, Mario doesn't know what to do.
Mario: I'm no hero, Lu, not without you. How am I gonna save all of reality when I cannot save my little brother? Remember. C'mon Luigi... I need you back. I need you to be okay.
      • The worst part is that Mario had finally seemed to be reaching out to Luigi before Dimentio would take control of Luigi yet again, forcing him to brutally attack his brother to the point where he was bruised and beaten. While Luigi may become free after this, this ends up pretty short-lived...
    • Combined with Nightmare Fuel, but when Dimentio begins to have Luigi consumed by the floro sprout, Mario can do nothing but watch as he succumbs to the painful transformation. No begging would do anything, as he was just stuck there. Forced to watch his brother be transformed.
    • The psychological abuse Luigi faces at the hands of Dimentio in general can be seen as this. Luigi at the end of the day just wants to go back home with his brother, but Dimentio would continue flowing lies into his head that Mario truly never did care about him, and he was nothing more than an annoyance. It becomes even harder to watch after Dimentio begins to force Luigi into watching him nearly kill his brother.
    • When Luigi is about to consume the energy of the Pure Hearts, Dimentio points out that by doing this, Luigi would effectively be destroying himself due to now being infused with the power of chaos. Luigi however, in tears, knows this is the only way he can finally defeat Dimentio; by letting himself be destroyed.
Dimentio: The Pure Hearts will only harm you! At this point you've become one with chaos itself! Any offer of redemption is merely the promise of obliteration! There is no going back. Even if you could go back, who would accept you? After everything you've done? Everything you revealed yourself to be? If you turn your back on me, you'll have nothing. You'll be alone.
      Luigi: ...oh...okey-dokey.
    • As Dimentio dies, he makes it clear to Mario that because the power of the Chaos Heart and Luigi were intertwined with him, Luigi more likely than not did not survive the final fight and he puts the blame on Mario for killing his younger brother. What follows is Mario rushing to his brother, in tears as he would do what he could to revive him, begging for him to wake up. While Luigi would eventually wake up, seemingly through the Pure Hearts, his memory seems to be damaged.
  • Realism-Induced Horror: Putting aside his magical powers and plan to end all things, Dimentio's relationship with Luigi has vibes of many genuinely toxic and outright abusive relationships, with Dimentio continuously lying to Luigi about how he amounted to nothing and reminding him that without him, he's "nothing." It can become rather uncomfortable for people who have actually been in abusive relationships.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • While the comic does mostly follow the events of Super Paper Mario, Count Bleck's appearance toward the end of the story may still come as a surprise to some. Mainly considering that a majority of the story just focuses on the final battle.
    • Due to Toad having a quite minor role in the original game (considering he literally only appears in the opening), seeing him actually be part of Mario's party in this adaptation may come as a surprise to some.
    • Donkey Kong never makes an appearance in Super Paper Mario and to this day, has not appeared in the Paper Mario series in general. However, likely due to Bowser's Adaptational Villainy in the film which the webcomic shares continuity with, Donkey Kong takes his place in the webcomic, which may almost certainly come as a surprise to many.
  • The Woobie: Poor Luigi. He gets brainwashed into a pawn in a cataclysmic plan, lied to and manipulated by somebody he once trusted, then painfully transformed into a Meat Puppet. While he does eventually free himself, it comes at the cost of his memory. Even after being freed from Dimentio's torment, Luigi still has to deal with the effects of the Chaos Heart beginning to corrupt him.
