The Freedom Fighters have been battling against the forces of Dr. Eggman for years. They’ve fought him off several times, but have never been able to locate his main base…until now. As the team prepares for an all out assault on the base, Eggman prepares a few surprises of his own. And what the Freedom Fighters expect to be their final battle might only be the beginning of something new…

Sonic and the Freedom Fighters is a fanmade comic made by Mobius Comics. Its stated purpose is to bring back the original Archie cast while incorporating elements and characters from all across the franchise as a whole.

It can be read here.

Sonic and the Freedom Fighters contains examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • While Sally has always been an Action Girl, she typically served more as a strategist than an active combatant and even when that changed she was still a Badass Normal compared to most of her teammates. Here not only is she constantly on the frontlines but she also has the ability to manipulate Chaos energy and form it into weapons.
    • In the original Sonic the Hedgehog the Egg Crusher was just a set of pistons that occasionally fired energy orbs. Here its a Spider Tank with a Wave-Motion Gun. Downplayed in that it goes down rather easily, though it was up against five opponents at once and Eggman never really intended for the mech itself to defeat them.
  • Adaptation Name Change: Metal Robotnik/Black Eggman is simply called Metal Eggmech here.
  • Adaptational Personality Change: Metal Sonic typically doesn’t much in the way of personality (not helped by him usually being mute), but he tends to either be stoic and deadly serious or outright Ax-Crazy. This Metal Sonic is incredibly chatty and seems to have inherited Sonic’s trademark cockiness. Though Eggman would grow upset with it and remove Metal Sonic's personality from him.
  • Adaptational Species Change: In the opening of issue 5, its revealed that Tails’ mother, Rosemary Prower, was an alien of some kind.
  • Adaptational Villainy: In the Archie comics Beauregard Rabbot was an Anti-Villain who only worked with Eggman out of necessity. Here, based on what little we’ve seen, he’s fully compliant in the doctor’s schemes.
  • Adapted Out:
    • Despite being one of the original Freedom Fighters, Rotor has yet to appear in the comic
    • The Time Stones have been replaced by the Phantom Ruby.
  • Adaptational Origin Connection:
    • Here Little Planet is Amy’s home rather simply being where she first met Sonic, as well as the home of the Fleetway cast.
    • The Piko Piko hammer and Little Planet were created by the Phantom Ruby and Amy has a link to the Ruby as well.
  • All There in the Manual: The comic has a series of weekly notes containing background lore and story information that hasn’t been mentioned in the comic proper yet, as well as several ideas that didn’t make the final cut and tentative ideas for future stories.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Johnny Lightfoot shows up just in time to save the Freedom Fighters from Brutus.
  • Composite Character: Breezie is a combination of both versions of herself, being a rogue creation of Eggman’s and the owner of a media conglomerate.
  • Cosmic Retcon: The beginning of issue 4 reveals that the comic takes place in a universe that formed after the Super Genesis Wave.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Brutus, much like his canon self, delivers one of these to the Freedom Fighters in their first meeting.
  • Literal Split Personality: Shard is this for Metal Sonic. To recap: Eggman, annoyed by Metal Sonic's cockiness, tried to delete Metal Sonic's personality, but Nicole interfered. This resulted into Metal Sonic's personality to become a separate entity, which became Shard.
  • In Medias Res: The comic starts after the Freedom Fighters have been battling Eggman for years and are just about to launch an attack on his main base.
  • Mysterious Watcher: Zonic observes Sonic’s fight with Metal Sonic from afar.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The sword Antoine wields is the same one he was supposed to get in the original Archie comics before they were cancelled.
    • During his fight with Metal, Sonic roughly paraphrases his "strange, isn’t it" speech from Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie.
  • Sphere of Destruction: One of these forms while Amy and Eggman fight over the Phantom Ruby and it grows to overtake all of Little Planet.
  • Was Once a Man: Grimer is revealed to have been (presumably) human and his current appearance is the result if an accident with the Phantom Ruby.
  • Wrench Whack: Tails wears a glove that allows him to create a hard light wrench and that we frequently uses in combat.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: Thanks to Eggman meddling with the Phantom Ruby, time on Little Planet starts moving faster than the outside world, with several years passing during the short time it takes for Amy to find Sonic and return.
  • Your Princess Is in Another Castle!: After fighting their way through Scrap Brain zone, they discover Eggman has already abandoned the base and they’ve been fighting a remotely controlled mech thats been rigged to blow.
