Touhou Doom: Unusual Invasion of Fire and Brimstone is a 5-episode, 32-map megawad for Doom II created by Untitled made for the GZDoom engine that combines the gameplays of Touhou Project and Doom.

You, as Doomguy, go out to investigate a mysterious UAC warp gate facility, where a month prior, all communication was lost. There, a secret portal to Gensokyo is found, and Doomguy must fight through its inhabitants to figure out the situation.

This mod contains the following tropes:

  • Bottomless Magazines: The two new weapons Doomguy gets in the megawad has infinite ammo due to the bullet hell nature of the wad. The ammo counter normally used for the original Doom weapons in the first episode is even retrofitted into a power meter for the new weapons where they get stronger the more the meter fills up.
  • Boss Rush: The Extra Story consists of refights against several bosses fought in the 4 previous episodes.
  • Breaking the Fourth Wall: Koishi Komejii knows if you're skipping cutscenes, and even forces you to watch her subsequent ones. Trying to time-out Dekw Sign "This is why we can't have nice things" also elicits a response from her as well saying the timers don't work.
  • Broad Strokes: Episode 1 is a rough retelling of Touhou Koumakyou ~ the Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, while Episode 2 is a retelling of Touhou Chireiden ~ Subterranean Animism.
  • Circles of Hell: The refight against Mephistopheles in Map29 uses the Circles of Hell from The Divine Comedy as the "theme" for his spellcards.
  • Cool Versus Awesome: Doomguy versus Evaccaneer DOOM. It's a clash between one of the greatest FPS heroes versus one of the most infamous Bullet Hell shoot-'em-up bosses.
  • Developer's Foresight:
    • Staying in the outer regions of the arena to cheese Remilia's fight will cause her to lower the outer regions of the arena into lava.
    • Running away from Komachi during her midboss fight will cause her to change distance on you, more often than not plunging you into the Sanzu River.
  • Fisher Kingdom: Downplayed; the invading demons' attacks are far more akin to bullet hell patterns while in Gensokyo compared to their Doom counterparts. It seems like even vile hellspawn aren't exempt from breaking Spell Card Rules.
  • Game Mod: The Touhou Doom Advance Pack adds in a scoring system, power and point items, extends, and grazing into the base mod. Untitled has also made a series of mods that allow you to play with the enemies and allies of the mod with any map set, which also include a Touhou-themed weapon set as well.
  • Giant Space Flea from Nowhere: Don't ask how Evaccaneer DOOM made it into Gensokyo...
  • Magitek: The Touhou-themed weapons fit this bill, as they were presumably made by Yukari for Doomguy to use. The Hakurei Amulet Rifle resembles a Chaingun Cannon that shoots homing ofuda and cleansing needles. The Hakkero Star Cannon is stated to be a plasma launcher built from Marisa's mini-hakkero, and it even has the hakkero's octagonal Taoist trigram pattern as the weapon's screen visor.
  • Mind Screw: Koishi's second phase is a reference to the Koishi Hell series of Danmakufu scripts that seek to make the most insane spellcards for her. These spellcards are all Development Gags to the megawad's development.
  • Optional Boss: Like in Touhou, the Extra bosses (Flandre, Koishi, Yukari, and a refight against Mephistopheles) are completely optional. There's also Evaccaneer DOOM, accessible by completing five secret challenges during the fourth episode, Maps 21-25, and completing the 4th episode's Extra Stage.
  • Secondary Fire: Each of the Touhou-themed weapons have three firing modes based on the character the weapon represents that can be swapped around with alt-fire. This was probably done to fill in the roles of the original Doom weapons missing in Episode 2 and onwards.
  • Set a Mook to Kill a Mook: Demons as per usual, but averted for fairies. And when both are in the same area, the former will actually prioritize the latter over you, making it actually prudent to focus your fire on fairies before wiping the remaining demons (if they aren't already dead by then).
  • Shout-Out:
    • Koishi's second phase references a bunch of modders from the Doom community, that the creator has respect for:
      • Shivers Sign 'Original Map Do Not Steal is a reference to the modder Sgt. Shivers, who made his own version of Touhou Doom based on an even older version made by modder DustedPandemonic. Dusted's version of Touhou Doom stole a map from Freedoom, so Shivers replaced that map with the iconic E1M1 for his version.
      • Dekw Sign 'This is why we can't have nice things' is a reference to the creator's brother, who was also the main tester of the mod. He was constantly finding bugs or exploits to break the game, which annoyed Untitled so much that he made this spellcard to spite him. This explains why the arena itself is a bland rectangular room.
      • Yholl Sign "But they had A_SetScale" is a reference to the modder Yholl, who during a stream of the older Touhou Doom was happy when it was used, even if only once. Naturally, the attack doesn't use A_SetScale at all.
      • Terminus Sign "Philosophy Of A Hated Candelabra" is a reference to modder TerminusEst3, who played through the original version of Touhou Doom with his own Demonsteele mod. In Demonsteele, you can destroy decorative items like candelabras, and Terminus vowed to break every single candelabra in the game. The bullets in this spellcard are actually blocked by the candelabras, so destroying them makes the spellcard harder to dodge.
      • Praise Benellus! is a reference to Benellus, the God of Shotguns, with the attacks stolen directly from his appearance in Dump 3, which Untitled had made a map for.
    • Maps 21-26 and Map29 are all themed around different games of the Bullet Hell genre, and use music from their respective games.
  • Smart Bomb: The various spellcards you can collect fill this role, acting as the replacement for the BFG in Episode 2 and onward. They can even make you immune to enemy projectiles coming right at you in true Bullet Hell fashion.
  • The War Sequence: Near the end of Episode 4, you get thrusted into one giant level where you and your Touhou allies get to fight against The Legions of Hell. It's actually split into 5 map parts, but still.
  • Unexpected Gameplay Change: Yukari's optional Phantasm stage and the first half of "The One Who Opens The Gates" will change the gameplay to Touhou's top-down vertical scroller roots.
