Hello, this is Mario4812 here on TV Tropes! For those of you who don't know me, I am a Po of very peculiar taste. I always tend to put more work into a project than necessary, and I enjoy anything related to technology. On TV Tropes, my motto is "It can't be bad unless I've watched, played, or read it." You can find me all over the internet by searching for my name and I am always looking for new things to try. I've you're still reading this, I should point out that I find swearing completely distasteful in any form so I censor any tropes I name that have any swearing in them. If you're STILL reading this, thanks for stopping by and enjoy my page!

BI "Epic" vs. "Marm" XD
By Mario4812

Throughout the entire Tropeiverse, there is a constant battle being fought right underneath us. This battle takes place between the good and the bad, the wanted and the unwanted, the amazing and the lame. This is the battle between Epic (BI) and Marm (XD). (Not to be confused with Narm.)

Epic is the measurable amount of awesomeness that occurs at any given moment in any given form of media so, obviously, Your Mileage May Vary about its actual amount. Epic occurs when there is any intense or just plain awesome moment that the viewing audience wishes to witness over and over again, and it occasionally causes the audience to feel shocked or overwhelmed in a positive way. Marm is the measurable amount of awkwardness that occurs at any given moment in any given form of media so, obviously, Your Mileage May Vary about its actual amount. Marm occurs when there is any unnecessary or just plain awkward moment, and it occasionally causes feelings of embarrassment and regret after witnessing. Intense amounts of marm can potentially cause mental damage to the viewer.

In America, epic is measured in Paunches on a scale from 0 to 1. Scientists have not yet found a measurement that exceeds 1 Paunch, and it is almost impractical to have numbers near 1 since not many instances actually come close. Other countries that follow the metric system, however, measure epic in Laytons. The metric scale of epic ranges from 0 to about 9000. Recently, scientists have made a breakthrough and discovered a few moments that actually exceed 9000. The scale continues to grow, although it has remained at about 9398 for the past three years. Epic can never be a negative quantity.

The SI unit for Marm is the Ham which is measured on a scale from 0 to -H. H is typically rounded down to 69 for calculation purposes. In America, however, Marm is measured in Gabbas. The scale was made to be from 0 to -1 in order to be more parallel with the epic scale. Marm can never have a positive value. Generally, any value of marm below -34 Hams can be hazardous to one's health.

Epic Marm is a scientific inconceivability that cannot exist in any given situation. Epic Fail was for a long time theorized to be actual proof of Epic Marm, but the theory was disproven as of 2008. Any witnessed moment by the viewer that has a positive amount of epic has 0 Hams or Gabbas of Marm and anything that has a negative value of Marm has 0 Paunches or Laytons of Epic. Having a value of 0 on both scales is also an impossibility.

In 2001, Dr. Sigmund Natter discovered that every character from every form of media can be determined as either epic or marm at any given moment. With this knowledge, he invented the "Instantaneous Tsuna Function" or ITF. A character can have both positive epic and negative marm, but not at the same time. A character's ITF calculates whether the character is epic or marm at a specific moment in time. The exact formula is known as: (((Current Action of Character)+(Current Dialogue of Character))*(Current Facial Expression of Character))/(Bo). Bo is the symbol for the average constant amount of epic that the character normally has (in Laytons).

Epic cannot be converted into marm since it can never be negative and vice versa.

When epic and narm are mathematically combined, the following rules apply (in SI units):

X Laytons + Y Hams = Y Hams

If X>>-136.2Y, X Laytons + Y Hams = (Y+X) Laytons

If -136.2Y>X, X Laytons + Y Hams = ((Y/136.2)-X) Hams

X Laytons * Y Hams = π

X Laytons/Y Hams = The End of The Universe

The symbol for the Layton is: this. The symbol for the Paunch is: a four-pointed star. The symbol for the Ham is: Ӈ. The symbol for the Gabba is: Backwards Gamma.

Media with high levels of Epic (YMMV):

Media with high levels of Marm (YMMV):

  • Epic can be used as a noun and an adjective because it's just that epic!
  • Marm can only be used as a noun. Marmy is its adjective.
  • Neither word can be used as a verb.
  • "Marmless" is an adjective that describes something with a Marm value very close to 0 Hams.
  • "Dismarm" is a verb that refers to the action of transitioning from marm to epic.
  • "Marmful" is an adjective that describes something with a marm value below -34 Hams.
