- Channel Hop: They moved to Columbia Records in the US with this album, though all albums before this were still owned in the region by Capitol Records, to whom the US rights would revert in 2000. After the collapse of EMI, the band's back catalog is distributed outside of Europe once again by Columbia's parent company, Sony, while the band's catalog in the U.K. and Europe is distributed by Parlophone Records, all under the band's own Pink Floyd Records vanity label.
- Creator's Favorite Episode: Both David Gilmour and Richard Wright named this as their favorite Pink Floyd album, despite the Troubled Production mentioned below.
- Cut Song: "Dogs" and "Sheep", known back then as "You Gotta Be Crazy" and "Raving and Drooling", were originally intended to be on the album, but due to Roger Waters changing his mind on the album's concept, they were set aside until Animals.
- Demand Overload: Demand for the album was so high (attracting 250,000 preorders in the UK alone) that EMI had to inform retailers that they could only fulfil around half their stock orders. The album ultimately became Pink Floyd's fastest-selling release.
- Feelies: The LP was shrink-wrapped in black plastic, with a sticker on the outside. Between the wrap and the sleeve was a postcard.
- Limited Special Collector's Ultimate Edition: A box set of the album, called "Immersion," was released in 2011 as part of a massive re-release of the band's catalog. It includes three different mixes of the album, a live version of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" performed in London in 1974 (along with live early versions of songs that would appear on Animals), tour films, demos, a hardcover book, and other collectibles. An Immersion set was also released for The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.

- In JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable, main character Josuke Higashikata's Stand is named Crazy Diamond; the English localization's Dub Name Change, Shining Diamond, preserves the reference.
- The puffing, pumping synth noises that punctuate "Welcome to the Machine" are sampled in the EarthBound track "Belch's Factory".
- Arjen Anthony Lucassen covered "Welcome to the Machine" on his solo album Lost in the New Real.
- The closing ceremony of the 2012 Olympics in London featured Ed Sheeran covering the Title Track; the performance ends with a stuntman shaking hands with a mannequin that bursts into flames, reenacting the album cover.
- Fellow Harvest Records act Death Grips released the physical edition of No Love Deep Web in a black nylon outer bag to hide its cover art depicting drummer Zach Hill's penis, nodding back to the LP release of Wish You Were Here (and by extent, Country Life by Roxy Music, whose green outer bag for the initial US release inspired the black bag for Wish You Were Here).
- In Chapter 2 of Deltarune, the Recruits menu's bio for Ruddin — an enemy themed after the diamond playing card suit — ends with the phrase "Shine on, you lazy diamond!"
- The album cover for Metro Boomin's Heroes and Villains is a recreation of the cover for Wish You Were Here.
- The promotional art for the Steven Universe episode "Mr. Universe" references the album cover of Wish You Where Here, with Greg and Steven in place of the two businessmen. The fact that Wish You Were Here is bookended by the two halves of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" additionally factors into the show's gemstone theming and Steven's status as the son of Pink Diamond.
- Veronica Roth cites the song as one of her major inspirations in writing Poster Girl, especially when it comes to the mind and feelings of the main character Sonya Kantor.
- Refitted for Sequel: Two tracks, "You Gotta Be Crazy", and "Raving and Drooling" were considered for inclusion on the album, before Roger Waters hit on the concept of the pressures of the music industry. These songs were still played on the tour and Waters would later rework the lyrics into "Dogs" and "Sheep" on the next album.
- Similarly Named Works: Badfinger released an album titled Wish You Were Here in 1974, just a year before this album came out.
- Troubled Production: The band had trouble coming up with ideas for this album, one of the initial ideas being the Household Objects project that yielded little material, even though recordings of wine glasses were used for the intro of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond". Nick Mason was undergoing marital strife, which affected his performances.
- What Could Have Been: One early idea for the album was a Concept Album called Household Objects, which would've consisted entirely of recordings played with everyday items. The album was quickly scrapped because it would've been highly unfeasible with the technology that was available at the time. Only one remnant of the project ended up making it onto the final album: a recording of wet fingers sliding across the rims of filled wine glasses, used for the opening of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts I-V)".
- Writer Revolt: The pressure regarding following The Dark Side of the Moon led to "Welcome to the Machine" and "Have a Cigar", both disses against the music industry.
