Trivia / Superior Spider-Man (2013)

Go To

  • Beam Me Up, Scotty!: While Otto has said "The Die is Cast", he has only said it three times, and only once in the title comic. Yet people still try to make it his catch phrase mostly due to Memetic Mutation.
  • Executive Meddling: Slott has made it clear that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is the reason the series ended when it did, even saying "it's good they planned the movie release around his story."
  • Lying Creator:
    • Before the identity of the new Spider-Man was revealed Dan Slott "accidentally" tweeted Ryan Stegman a message implying Miguel O'Hara/Spider-Man 2099 was the new Spider-Man as a Red Herring. Slott actually came out and apologised over it.
    • Dan Slott claims he wanted to take Spider-Man's Hero with Bad Publicity to a meta level, with readers being convinced Ock-as-Spidey was a menace whilst he tried to do good. The first issue ends with Peter's spirit intervening to stop Otto from killing a criminal.
    • Following the release of Amazing 700, Marvel spent two weeks hyping Peter Parker's death as permanent with Otto-as-Peter being the new status quo from this point onward. Superior 1 ends with The Reveal that Peter's still around as a sort-of Spirit Advisor stopping Otto from crossing certain lines, and vowing to keep fighting to regain his life, it lasted 9 issues but was later averted in issue #19 where Peter once again manages to gain a foothold in Otto's mind.
    • When the news came that Peter would take back his body, Dan Slott admitted that he hated to have lied for so long, especially towards little kids. He also admitted the only two people he told this to was Stan Lee and Andrew Garfield.
    • When the "Darkest Hours" storyline started up, it had happened just as the Agent Venom series had ended. When confronted, Dan kept saying that Venom would still be around, but whether Flash Thompson would be wearing it was still up in the air. Even when it stood revealed that Agent Venom would be joining the Guardians of the Galaxy, Dan still kept teasing people that, just because it's Agent Venom doesn't mean Flash is under there. Flash got the symbiote back.
  • Older Than They Think:
    • The idea of an Anti-Hero Spider-Man that is willing to use lethal force against criminals isn't new. In one issue of the The Gauntlet and Grim Hunt series, an alternate Bad Future shown by Arachne reveals what would happen if Peter Parker ended up killing Kraven the Hunter and thus deciding to drop his Thou Shall Not Kill moral. The end results of Spidey dropping his moral code are different - the alternate future saw Spider-Man become an outcast, whilst Superior Spider-Man has seen Otto become praised by the public for doing so.
      • There was also What If? Spider-Man Vs. Wolverine #1 - The Spider Who Went Into The Cold where Peter became a cold-hearted assassin after accidentally killing a rogue KGB agent he'd befriended.
    • The phrase "Crazy Town Banana Pants" is actually a Shout-Out to Community, not something Dan Slott came up with. However, due to Community's Cult Classic status & this being a Spider-Man comic, plenty of people are unaware of this.
  • Parody Retcon: Slott went from saying that the work was supposed to be a redemption story to saying that Otto was supposed to become evil from the beginning with a little over halfway through the run. Keep in mind, this is the same guy that meticulously defended a number of Otto's Kick the Dog actions, claiming that they were heroic in some fashion.
  • Reality Subtext: Carlie's heart-to-heart with Mary Jane, about how as long as she is part of Peter's life, things will go bad for her regardless if she's his girlfriend, colleague, or just a friend. The fact that this ends with her literally being Put on the Bus and she has not reappeared in the franchise since makes it come off as Slott throwing in the towel in regards to the fan reaction to Carlie Cooper.
  • Trolling Creator: The solicit for Issue #9 says it all.
The hottest comic in comics comes to a turning point that will get you angrier than you were after Spidey #700!note
  • What Could Have Been: This storyline nearly started nearly a year earlier, but Slott wanted to happen at Amazing #700, thus creating Ends of the Earth.
    • The "Superior Venom" storyline was created to extend the comic long enough so that the upcoming Spider-Verse storyline didn't start too early.
    • Slott has said that had he not been forced to bring Peter back for the movie, he'd have kept Otto around for a while longer.
    • Spider-Verse was supposed to be a Superior storyline, but while editorial liked the idea, they didn't like the idea of Otto being the big hero and said that if a story like that should happen, Peter needed to be back in the saddle again. The time Otto spent time-displaced ends up throwing him in the mix via retcon.
      • We got this with Spidergeddon as Otto and Miles Morales are leads while Peter almost misses the entire event.
