Trivia / Puffs the Play

Go To

  • Acting for Two: Besides the actors playing Wayne, Oliver, and Megan (who do cameo as Death Buddies at the beginning of sixth year), every actor plays at least two major characters, whether it's Cedric doubling as Mr. Voldy himself or J. Finch-Fletchley doubling as Zach Smith.
  • Approval of God:
    • One of the fans of this show is Chris Rankin - Percy Weasley from the movies.
    • Miriam Margoyles, who played Professor Sprout in the movies, is also a big fan and came to opening night of the Australian production.
  • Blooper: As Zach Smith's monologue is improvised and different every night, Corpsing from the other actors onstage occurs often. In the proshot, the credits include even more Zach Smith monologues.
  • Descended Creator: For one performance, Matt Cox (the playwright) played Zach Smith. He then reprised the role in a reunion of every single Zach Smith for the final performance at New World Stages.
  • Dueling Works: For a while, this show played in New York City at the same time as Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which not only dealt with the Harry Potter characters, but also featured Cedric Diggory in a prominent role.
  • Harpo Does Something Funny: Zach Smith's monologue. Full stop.
    • The founder of the Snakes gets to come up with a weird yet apt descriptor for who they want to accept into the school. In the proshot, it's "most likely to throw a glass of white wine in your face."
  • Hey, It's That Sound!: In an early performance, instead of the disappointing foghorn noise when the Puffs lose points, an audio clip was played of Gene Wilder saying "You lose!"
    • There's a foghorn sound that's heard throughout the show that's a stock foghorn sound - for example, at the end of "Haus of Holbein" from Six.
  • Lying Creator: During the reading of Nineteen-ish Years After on YouTube, Matt Cox introduces the entire cast, which is comprised of the original cast of Puffs at New World Stages. Missing from the lineup, however, is Zac Moon, who plays Wayne. After introducing everyone else, Cox offhandedly states, "And that's everyone who still has a character alive at the end of Puffs. Spoilers for Puffs." Zac, of course, shows up in the show as an alternate-universe Badass!Wayne, whom Little Wayne encounters on his time-traveling adventures.
  • The Red Stapler: After the proshot was released in theaters, there was an uptick in sales of 27 Dresses.
  • Voices in One Room: The sequels feature a few cases of this: A.J. Ditty and Eleanor Phillips, Matt Cox and Andy Miller, and Madeleine Bundy and Stephen Stout were each quarantined together during the COVID-19 pandemic; therefore, their parts of the sequels as performed over Zoom are performed together.
  • What Could Have Been: In early drafts, Wayne was to have come back as a ghost in the 19 Years Later scene, before it was decided it cheapened the effect of his death in the first place... though the idea was later used for Leanne in Puf3s.
  • Word of Saint Paul: There's only one contradiction between Puffs and the original series: in the original, Zach Smith doesn't fight in the Battle of Hogwarts. A fan theory, approved by Nick Carrillo, is that he's a time traveller - which actually checks out with many of his improvised monologues.
    • Ascended Fanon in that as of Nineteen-ish Years After, Zach Smith is a time traveller.
