Trivia tropes for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (2023)

  • Acting for Two:
    • Besides voicing Devil Dinosaur, Fred Tatasciore voices Coach Hrbek and Devos.
    • In addition to voicing the Beyonder, Laurence Fishburne also reprises his role of Dr. Bill Foster from Ant-Man and the Wasp.
  • Adored by the Studio: Next to The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, it's clear that Disney Television Animation showed above-average support for the series' success. Ever since New York Comic Con 2022 in October, it had run early ads in New York City's LinkNYC kiosks systems. This was paired with the series being renewed for Season 2. Furthermore, on February 11, 2023, Lunella debuted as a greeting character at Disneyland California Adventure with the backup musical group from the NYCC 2022 panel.
  • Casting Gag: The symbiote Syphonator is voiced by Josh Keaton. Fitting, given another character he voiced has previous experiences dealing with them.
  • The Cast Showoff: Diamond White was already known for her incredible singing voice, but she performs a flawless rap bit during the first song of the series in the premiere episode.
  • Content Leak:
    • The full series' intro, in animatic form, was accidentally released early on Disney-affiliated and Laurence Fishburne's social media accounts on December 8, 2021. It was part of a larger promotional video featuring Fishburne making an "early Christmas gift" out of showing the theme song and planned-out visuals. The video was taken down, re-edited, and uploaded on December 15, 2021 with Fishburne teasing the Summer 2022. That version featured flashing snippets of the finished animation from the intro and Episode 2.
    • Concept background art depicting the Captain America mural was leaked between late 2021 and early 2022.
  • The Danza: Alison Brie plays Allison "Aftershock" Dillon.
  • Descended Creator: Laurence Fishburne executive produces the series and provides the voice of the Beyonder and “Backstory Guy” who we discover in Episode 6 are one and the same! He also appears in a later episode reprising his role as Bill Foster from Ant-Man and the Wasp.
  • He Also Did:
  • Inspiration for the Work: According to producer Steve Loter, The Beyonder is naturally based on Laurance Fishburne's acting and expressions, along with musician Raphael Saadiq's coolness and David Bowie. Furthermore, animated characters Jack Skellington and Mok also defined the character's physicality and mannerisms.
  • Newbie Boom: According to Bleeding Cool, after the series premiered, existing collections of the original comic run began to sell out on Amazon. This is alongside value hikes on Ebay.
  • Out of Order: For unknown reasons, the episode “Goodnight, Moon Girl” was switched with “Moon Girl’s Day Off”. A particularly egregious example due to promos for the former episode having aired on Disney Channel in the week leading up, and the latter episode having a direct reference to the former (it didn’t help that Canada received the episode on its planned air date). This was later corrected after the Season 1 finale, with the two episodes swapping places on the playlist.
  • Pop-Star Composer: R&B singer Raphael Saadiq of the multi-platinum group Tony! Toni! Toné! serves as the composer for the series.
  • Queer Character, Queer Actor:
    • Asia Kate Dillon, who identifies as non-binary, plays LOS-307, who also identifies as non-binary.
    • Transgender non-binary actor Indya Moore voices Brooklyn, a transgender girl who is a member of the volleyball team in her school.
    • Pansexual transmasculine non-binary actor Ian Alexander voices Tai, a non-binary person who is a member of the volleyball team in their school.
    • Gay actors Andy Cohen and Wilson Cruz voice Isaac and Antonio Calderon, Casey's dads.
  • Release Date Change: The series was initially set to release sometime in 2020 but was delayed to 2021, then February 2022, and then Summer 2022 before finally settling on February 10, 2023 for unknown reasons.
  • Renewed Before Premiere: On October 8, 2022, fresh from its appearance at New York Comic Con, the series was given a Season 2 order ahead of its February 10, 2023 debut.
  • Role Reprise:
  • The Shelf of Movie Languishment: The first season, despite airing in early 2023, in its entirety was produced in 2022 according to the end credits of every episode.
    • Content leaks were happening as early as December 2021, so the show was gathering dust for quite some time before being released to the public.
  • Series Hiatus: The hiatus between Season 1 and 2 is from April 12, 2023 - February 2, 2024, which is 9 months and 21 days apart.
  • So My Kids Can Watch: According to the music featurette, Laurence Fishburne was drawn to the project by the prospect of creating a character that young Black girls like his daughters could see themselves in.
  • Spoiled by the Merchandise: A soundtrack containing most of Season 1's songs was released alongside the series premiere. One of the songs, "Moon Girl Magic (70s Retro Version)" from the then-unaired finale, features lyrics that even out of context heavily suggest that Lunella's grandmother Mimi is the original Moon Girl, which is revealed to be true in the same episode.
  • Voices in One Room:
    • According to an interview, Diamond White (Lunella) and Libe Barer (Casey) record their lines together to make Lunella and Casey's friendship as authentic as possible.
    • This was also done with Diamond White and Fred Tatasciore to provide a natural background for Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur's bond.
