Trivia / Leave It to Beaver

Go To

  • Casting Gag:
    • Ken Osmond (Eddie Haskell) appears in the 1997 movie as Eddie's father.
    • Barbara Billingsley herself appeared as Aunt Martha in the 1997 film.
  • Channel Hop:
    • The revival series aired first on the Disney Channel (back when it was a premium service like HBO and had little original programming), then TBS (also then having a lack of originals), and a concurrent stint in syndication from 1988–89.
    • Likewise, the original series ran on CBS for its first season (1957–58) before moving to ABC from Season 2 onwards.
  • The Character Died with Him:
    • In the 1983 made-for-TV movie it's revealed that Ward Cleaver passed away in 1977 at the age of 67. Ward's actor, Hugh Beaumont, had passed away in 1982 of a heart attack.
    • Barely averted with the character of Fred Rutherford. Fred's actor, Richard Deacon, appeared in the 1983 "Still the Beaver" reunion movie but died shortly before the subsequent series began production; resulting in Fred being recast (see The Other Darrin).
  • The Danza: Future Disney Channel Production regular Richard Correll as Richard Rickover.
  • Directed by Cast Member: Hugh Beaumont (Ward) helmed several episodes, including the Series Finale.
  • Keep Circulating the Tapes: For The New Leave It to Beaver series. Due to legal issues, the revival series has never been released on DVD.
  • Marth Debuted in "Smash Bros.": For non-American viewers, the 1997 live-action film was the only thing from the franchise brought overseas, as neither the original series, nor its revivals were broadcasted outside the U.S. and Canada.
  • The Other Darrin: Richard Deacon's death shortly before the start of production of the revival series resulted in Fred Rutherford being briefly recast by Larry D. Mannnote  before the character was dropped.
  • The Other Marty: Ward and Wally Cleaver were played by Max Showalter (credited as Casey Adams) and Paul Sullivan in the pilot before being replaced in the series proper by Hugh Beaumont and Tony Dow, respectively.
  • Recast as a Regular: Cheryl Holdridge appeared in the Season 2 episode "Wally's Pug Nose" as a girl named Gloria who tells Wally he has a pug nose before being cast in the recurring role of Julie Foster.
  • Real-Life Relative:
    • Stephen Talbot's father Lyle Talbot played Chuck Dennison in the Season One episodes "Party Invitation" and "The Perfect Father".
    • Phyllis Coates, then-wife of frequent series director Norman Tokar, played Betty Donaldson in the Season 1 episode "New Neighbors".
  • Screwed by the Lawyers: The 1980s revival hasn't been seen since it ended, thanks to legal issues. Apparently, Universal sold their stake in the show to Qintex Entertainment (a merger of RHI and Hal Roach Studios), only for Qintex's Australian parent company (also named Qintex) to go bankrupt. As a result, no one's quite sure who owns the rights now.note
  • Technology Marches On: In "Sweatshirt Monsters", when Beaver wears a shirt that the school finds objectionable, the principal calls his parents and wants one of them to come to her office as soon as possible. June calls Ward and asks him to take time off from work to handle the situation because she is already late for her plans, which she would have canceled if only she could get a hold of her friend. Today, her friend would likely have a cell phone and it'd be easier to call and cancel on short notice (unless she lost her cell phone or was having phone issues).
  • Written by Cast Member: Hugh Beaumont wrote the story for the Season 2 episode "A Horse Named Nick".
  • You Look Familiar: Veronica Cartwright, who played recurring character Violet Rutherford in the first half of the series' run, returned as Peggy MacIntosh; one of two girls Beaver tries to take to a school dance in the Season 6 episode "Don Juan Beaver".
