- Distanced from Current Events: The Tagline of the event in 2001 was originally, "This time, terror takes control!", but after 9/11 had occurred, it was changed to, "You wanted scary? Be careful what you ask for!"
- Dueling Works: In 2011, both Howl-O-Scream and Halloween Horror Nights and had a haunted house based around Edgar Allan Poe, and both houses were even titled Nevermore.
- Follow the Leader: In 2015, Halloween Horror Nights brought back their past Icons for meet-and-greets. That same year, Howl-O-Scream did something similar by letting fans vote on which past Icon they would like to see again at the event for a meet-and-greet, the poll options being the Death Jockey, the Raven Twins, and The Trickster; the Raven Twins being the ones that won the vote in the end.
- Franchise Killer: Was just barely averted in 2010, as that year was considered a complete financial disaster; so bad that Busch Gardens actually considered pulling the plug on the event forever because of its performance. In the end, it was decided to let the event continue, but on a reduced budget.
