Trivia / Hilary Duff

Go To

  • Acting for Two: In The Lizzie McGuire Movie, she plays both Lizzie and Identical Stranger Isabella Parigi.
  • Awesome, Dear Boy: She agreed to do A Cinderella Story because Cinderella was her favourite fairytale.
  • Chart Displacement: "Come Clean" is often thought of to be Hilary's Signature Song, and it did make it to a respectable #35 on the Billboard, but not as high as "Wake Up" (#29) or "With Love" (#24). "Come Clean" has sold more singles and was also the theme song to Laguna Beach, which may explain the discrepancy.
  • Contractual Purity: Hilary kept a low profile for years, and she only got minor controversies. However, said attempts to make her image filthy were minimal, and failed to even leave a dent on her good girl image.
  • Dye Hard: Naturally a brunette, but has had her hair dyed blonde for a long time. She has had it dyed black and dark brown briefly, although she goes back and forth to what hair color she'd prefer currently.
  • I Am Not Leonard Nimoy: Due to Lizzie McGuire typecasting, she spent most of the 2000s playing variations of a Naïve Everygirl who was pretty enough to be desirable, while also being a sweet good girl. It's safe to say that 'Hilary Duff character' was as much of a brand as Julia Roberts's persona in the 90s.
  • Irony as She Is Cast: Despite being most famous for playing middle school and high school students, she was homeschooled from the age of six and so never had to deal with many of the issues her most famous characters did.
  • Playing Against Type: Some of her post-Lizzie McGuire roles have aimed for this, casting her as characters who are considerably more abrasive and rough around the edges with Yonica and Greta being the most notable examples and impressing quite a few critics with her ability to go radically against her image and play more complex characters.
  • Real-Life Relative: Her sister Haylie Duff plays Kate's cousin Amy in a few episodes of Lizzie McGuire, and they play sisters in Material Girls.
  • Star-Derailing Role: While Raise Your Voice and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 were financial successes, she received two Razzie nominations, and another one for Material Girls. The flopping of that and War, Inc., as well as her desire to cultivate a maturer image saw her star power fading.
  • Star-Making Role: Her role as Lizzie McGuire became her gateway to other projects later.
  • Tom Hanks Syndrome: After her Lizzie stint, Hilary was typecast in her typical tween-appealing roles before venturing for slightly more dramatic territory in Raise Your Voice and The Perfect Man (the latter somewhat less serious than the former). In both cases, it backfired when the films bombed at the box office and critics slammed not only the films, but also her performance. However, she did earn some praise for War, Inc. and According to Greta. Her role in Younger, while showing some traces of Deadpan Snarker, is more dramatic and adult than most of her usual roles.
  • What Could Have Been: She announced that she would be part of a Lizzie McGuire revival on Disney+, similar to Raven's Home. It however never materialised due to Creative Differences.
