Trivia / GLOW (2017)

Go To

  • The Cast Showoff:
  • Cast the Expert: Kia Stevens, John Morrison, Brodus Clay, Carlito Colón, and Chavo Guerrero Jr. are all actual professional wrestlers, with Chavo Guerrero Jr. coming from a Wrestling Family. You can also spot wrestlers Alex Riley, Joey Ryan, Christopher Daniels, and Frankie Kazarian at the wrestling show in episode five.
  • Creator Backlash: After the show was cancelled, many of the actresses revealed that they were very disappointed throughout its run at the lack of engagement with the idea of so many of the wrestler characters being ethnic stereotypes, which its fourth season was set to finally address in a meaningful way after they collaborated on a letter to the producers about it, which now unfortunately won't happen.
  • Dawson Casting: Britt Baron is in her mid-twenties playing the teenage Justine.
  • Directed by Cast Member: Alison Brie directs the Season 3 episode "Hollywood Homecoming." Accordingly, Ruth only appears in a single scene, asleep.
  • Irony as She Is Cast:
    • The Jewish actress Alison Brie plays Ruth, who knows nothing about Judaism and spends an episode trying to figure out how to play a Communist Russian by ineptly crashing a Russian-American bris. She never seems to realize that the people she's interrogating are the people who fled the Communists, but does eventually try to switch her character from a Communist to a kvetchy Orthodox Jewish babushka.
    • Professional musician Kate Nash plays Rhonda, who composes and performs a completely inept rap song to promote the show.
    • Glenn assumes that Sam is Jewish, but Sam is annoyed and snaps that he's not. He's played by the very Jewish Marc Maron.
  • Playing Against Type:
    • Alison Brie, who is known for playing a sympathetic The Cutie or/and Ms. Fanservice, gets to play a down-on-her-luck (faux) Action Girl who becomes less sympathetic once she knowingly sleeps with her Best Friend's husband. Sam also tells her that he can't decide whether she's attractive, though that turns out to just be his own peculiarity.
    • Kia Stevens built a career of being a Wrestling Monster, but her character here is an ordinary woman who seems to enjoy participating in GLOW despite also chafing against the racist stereotypes her character embodies.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Britt Baron was a big fan of Kate Nash's music before becoming Nash's co-star on the show.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: The show's theme tune is "The Warrior" by Scandal featuring Patty Smyth, though it is only used in the first episode of each season.
  • What Could Have Been: Ryan Nemeth, best known now for his time in All Elite Wrestling, stated that he was cast in the cancelled final season as the boyfriend of an unspecified major character.
  • Written-In Infirmity: Kia Stevens' real-life back problems are written into the show in Season 3.
