Trivia / Fear Effect

  • B-Team Sequel: Fear Effect Sedna was developed by French indie studio Sushee rather than Kronos Digital Entertainment.
  • Development Hell: Fear Effect Reinvented, a remake of the original game developed by Fear Effect Sedna studio Sushee, was announced in 2017. However, in 2019, Sushee was replaced by MegaPixel Studio, who scrapped Sushee's plans for a faithful remake and reworked it into a third-person shooter. Small community updates that didn't make the news were shared, then nothing. A new trailer surfaced at Gamescom 2022 claiming that Reinvented was coming "sooner than you think", but the game was cancelled the following year.
  • Early Draft Tie-In: The official comic tie-in for Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix manages to contradict the game's story and backstory. For starters, Fear Effect 2 is a prequel of the first game, showing the first meeting of Hana, Glas and Deke, but the comic treats it as a sequel - so Rain is waxing lyrical about people she hasn't actually met yet. In the game, after stealing the genetic code Hana and Rain simply walk out of the building (at night) in their party dresses and head back to their nifty speedboat/submersible together, while the comic splits them up and throws Rain into a jet ski chase through the aqueducts (in daylight). Game Rain is an amnesiac who remembers nothing about her life before Hana first found her; Comic Rain talks about the time she took physics class. Finally, the comic portrays Rain as a hyper-competent superspy type doing stunts and making crack shots, yet in the game she's still a newbie to the mercenary business and often has to be coached and rescued by Hana.
  • Executive Meddling: Fear Effect: Inferno was reportedly cancelled by Eidos Interactive due to "quality control".
  • Multi-Disc Work: Fear Effect is split into four discs, but Disc 1 is required again for endgame content.
  • The Other Darrin:
    • In the original Fear Effect, Elyse Dinh voiced Hana, Braeden Marcott voiced Glas, and Anthony De Longis voiced Deke. In Fear Effect 2, Wendee Lee voiced Hana, Anthony Gayle Marcotte voiced Glas, and Lex Lang voiced Deke.
    • It's rumored that Anthony De Longis was going to reprise his role as Deke in Inferno, replacing Lex Lang.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • The first game was originally going to be titled Fear Factor. The title was changed because it was too similar to the popular heavy metal band Fear Factory.
    • Inferno was supposed to be released for the PlayStation 2. It was slated to be the direct sequel of the original Fear Effect. However, the game was cancelled in 2003. Despite this, it wasn't officially announced as such until 2004.
    • A live-action film adaptation was stuck in development hell for years. It was originally going to be helmed by Uwe Boll. However, this was scrapped when the deal he had with Eidos fell through. The rights for the movie changed hands for years before falling off the face of the planet.
    • Fear Effect Reinvented, a remake of the original Fear Effect published by Forever Entertainment, was announced in 2017 and entered a six-year Development Hell, during which few updates were shared, the original developer Sushee was replaced by MegaPixel Studio, and the game was changed from a faithful remake to a third-person shooter. A trailer showing this new direction surfaced in 2022 and was negatively received. After further silence, the game was cancelled a year later.
  • Technology Marches On: For a series taking place in the middle of the 21st century, people still have an attachment to flip phones and flash disks.
