Trivia / Extraction

Go To

  • Absurdly Short Production Time: Chris Hemsworth had next-to-no time to prepare for the film's action sequences, only becoming available a mere three days before shooting began on the signature oner.
  • California Doubling: While set in Bangladesh, the film was shot in India and Thailand.
  • Creator Backlash:
    • Director Sam Hargrave regretted his decision to give Tyler a neck tattoo, as the make-up came off constantly and proved to be a continuity nightmare.
    • Bangladeshi filmmaker Raffael Ahsan was brought on as a translator for the script. Sam Hargrave insisted on accurate Bengali to be spoken for the setting. Yet none of the Indian cast could speak the langauge well enough for Ahsan. Ahsan hinted that Indian producer Pranav Sahni was brought on and had some influence on the casting which was bias for Indian actors over Bangladeshi ones.
  • Fake Nationality: Every Bangladeshi in the film is portrayed by an Indian actor except for Nik Khan whose actress is French Iranian.
  • Follow the Leader: Hargrave says that the extended and highly physical action sequences in John Wick paved the way for Extraction's fight and stunt choreography.
  • Production Posse: This film is an MCU reunion.
    • Hargrave worked as a stunt coordinator and second unit director on The Russo Brothers' projects since Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The Russos passed this film's script onto Hargrave, thinking that it would be a good fit for his directorial debut, and served as producers. Joe Russo also wrote the screenplay.
    • Hargrave sought out Chris Hemsworth for the lead because he knew Hemsworth could bring the necessary physicality to the role from working with him on Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame.
    • Henry Jackman composed the film's score, having previously worked on The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.
    • Casting was handled by Sarah Halley Finn, who's also responsible for all the casting in the MCU.
  • Real-Life Relative: Tyler's son is portrayed by Chris Hemsworth's real son.
  • Reality Subtext: The Oner sequence was originally written as a traditional action set piece, but the team quickly realized that they couldn't afford to shoot the many different master and coverage shots it would have required. It was decided that the sequence would be shot like a oner insteadnote  so that the action would be seen from the perspective of a single camera, saving time and money.
  • Similarly Named Works: Extraction was also the title of a 2015 spy thriller starring Bruce Willis, Gina Carano, and Kellan Lutz. The two movies are otherwise unrelated.
  • Troubled Production: Shooting The Oner proved to be a challenge. First, the production simply couldn't afford to shoot it as a traditional set piece (as detailed under Reality Subtext). Then, the locations turned out to be structurally unsound and posed a genuine danger to everyone so money had to be taken out of the already tight budget to do repair work. Finally, the Indian government prohibited the production from importing blank-firing guns, so they had to hurriedly acquire rubber replicas and use CGI to add muzzle flashes and flying casings in post.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • During early production the film was named Dhaka and was going to only feature Bangladesh as the setting and Bangladeshi characters before switching Ovi and Saju to being Indian.
    • Early News on the films production had British Pakistani Jay Ali (Ray Nadeem of Daredevil Season 3) cast in the role presumably as Nik Khan.
