Trivia / Daffney Unger

  • Doing It for the Art:
Chewsh: Once upon a time, at my first Shimmer show, I happened upon something that’s stuck with me for almost half a decade now. Daffney was outside the afterparty, and at the time she was a heel, but she was telling everyone stories and showing us cat pictures on her phone. One dude approached her and said, in this super proud way, “I love you so much, I NEVER boo you. Daffney looked at him and in the saddest voice I’ve heard, asked, “Why? Am I doing a bad job?” And this guy seemed so confused. He was like, “no, I love you. I want you to know it, so I cheer!” And Daffney said, and this sticks with me, “If you like what I’m doing, boo me louder than anyone.”
  • Dyeing for Your Art: She had her hair actually cut off by The Beautiful People while as The Governor.
  • The Other Darrin: Violet Devine was Draculetta in CRUSH before Daffney got the gimmick in Wrestlicious, where another woman shared the Draculetta gimmick with her. The other one would rap while Daffney would wrestle.
  • Playing Against Type: Needless to say 'The Governor' was quite different from what she had done before.
  • Reality Subtext: SoCal Val's pitting Andrea against members of Daffney's All-Star Squad, and attempts to have her injure Daffney's favorite protege Solo Darling, gain an additional disturbing context when one remembers that Andrea used to be Rossie Lottalove, who gave Daffney the injuries that lead her to leave TNA and play a part in founding Shine Wrestling. One could easily get the impression that when Daffney told the squad to stay home and lead the Iron Maidens for two months against Valifornia in revenge that drove a rift between Unger and Shine owner Lexie Fyfe that Daffney's revenge was much more personal and deep seated than anything stated on camera. Still, SoCal's reasons for bringing Andrea into Shine had nothing to do with Daffney or her squad, them becoming targets was explicitly stated to be a happy coincidence. Andrea was also never acknowledged to be the same person as Rosie Lottalove in Shine. No one who knew anything about the origins of the promotion or the history of the women involved could ignore these things, but no effort was made to capitalize on them and Andrea's most important feud ended up being with Ivelisse Velez, Mercedes Martinez and the rest of Las Sicarias as part of VA Lkyrie and C4, with the tensions between Daffney and Val being more pronounced that any feelings towards Andrea.
  • Role-Ending Misdemeanor: She was taken off TNA TV when she filed a Worker's Compensation claim against them, and not used until her contract expired. Hardly a standard example of a "misdemeanor" considering how shit TNA treated their talent at the time...
  • Romance on the Set: She used to date fellow wrestler CM Punk.
  • Screwed by the Network: Where to begin with TNA?
    • She was persuaded by management to take a chokeslam from the ring apron into a table full of thumbtacks at Bound For Glory 2009. This injured her, and TNA initially said they would cover the medical expenses, but then turned around and said she would have to pay it. And Spike TV refused to air the segment because of its policy about violence towards women.
    • She received a concussion in a match that was at the start of a week of tapings. They told her she was fine and tried to make her wrestle - around the same time they were doing a storyline involving Mr. Anderson having a concussion. Out of fear for her personal safety, she refused to work injured and was punished by being dropped from a scheduled photo shoot she was able to do.
    • While working a tryout match with Rosie Lottalove, Daffney received another concussion thanks to a botch by the former. TNA refused to pay the hospital bill for this incident as well, and then even used the footage of the injury in an attempt to get Rosie over as a monster.
    • These injuries left Daffney unable to wrestle again, though she was eventually given an out of court settlement as compensation in 2013.
  • What Could Have Been: The Governor was initially supposed to be THE Governor Sarah Palin, but she turned the offer down, so Daffney was brought in to portray "The Governor".
  • Written-In Infirmity: Daffney's trademark squeaky voice was improvised after Shannon had her tonsils removed.
  • You Look Familiar: In addition to WCW, also worked for WSU, Pro Wrestling Guerilla, CHIKARA (as Shark Girl), and Wrestlicious (as Draculetta). Daffney would later leave for Ring of Honor (as Lucy Furr), and during TNA's early years, she made a one off appearance as "Shannon".
