Trivia / Appetite for Destruction

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: In 1990, Slash said that, while he still likes "Sweet Child o' Mine", he hates how the song became a huge hit.
  • Creator's Favorite Episode: Slash named "Paradise City" as his favourite song on the album.
  • Magnum Opus Dissonance: "Sweet Child o' Mine" was meant to be just a song to fill space on the album; it wasn't expected to do particularly well. Now, it's acclaimed as the band's Signature Song alongside "Welcome to the Jungle" and "Paradise City", the album's two other major hits. "Sweet Child o' Mine" is particularly considered to be the defining song by Slash, who mindlessly came up with the main guitar riff as he was warming up, and the rest of the band thought it was so good they had to build a song around it.
    • The song was so popular that despite Slash publicly saying he hates its hit status (although he otherwise likes it), he still played it every night on his solo tours, simply because people wanted to hear it.
    • When the main riff of "Sweet Child o' Mine" was voted as the 8th-best guitar riff of all time, Slash also commented that "Sweet Child o' Mine" shouldn't even be on the list, and other Guns N' Roses songs would be better qualified. Clearly, the public disagrees.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: "Paradise City" serves as the theme song for Burnout Paradise, though it's not quite a perfect fit for such a cheerful game.
  • Similarly Named Works:
  • Throw It In!: Producer Spencer Proffer suggested adding a breakdown after Slash's solo in "Sweet Child o' Mine". The band agreed, but didn't know what they wanted to do. Axl started saying to himself "Where do we go, where do we go now?" while listening to the demo in a loop. Proffer said he should sing that, and the rest is history.
  • Write Who You Know: "My Michelle" (a friend of Axl), "Sweet Child o' Mine" (his then-girlfriend) and "Rocket Queen" (a girl who Axl knew and wanted to have a band by this name).
