• Creator Breakdown: Oshii made the anime while struggling with depression.
• Creator Killer: Oshii admits that because this film bombed at the box office, he couldn't get any animation work for the next four years until he revived his career with Patlabor.
• No Export for You: The uncut anime has yet to receive a US release, although fansubs are fairly easy to find.
• Referenced by...: Visual allusions to this film are somewhat common in Hidetaka Miyazaki's games.
  • The Old Hunters expansion for Bloodborne features vistas that could be ripped right from this film's apocalyptic landscape, namely in the Fishing Hamlet where the player can see the city of Yharnam under the water. It's strikingly similar to the ending of this film where the city floods.
  • The Painter from the Ashes of Ariandel expansion for Dark Souls III bears a striking resemblance to the female protagonist; a little girl with extremely long white hair who lives by herself in a secluded, decaying, gothic landscape.
  • Princess Filianore from The Ringed City expansion is also clearly inspired by the female protagonist of this film; she's a Mysterious Waif with extremely long hair who cradles a mysterious broken egg in her sleep. When the player touches the egg it crumbles completely into dust and causes the titular city to instantly decay to ruins, mirroring the ending of this film.
  • The cocoon of Miquella of the Hailgtree in Elden Ring greatly resembles the egg from this film.
• Shrug of God: Having made the OVA during a period of mental health struggles, Oshii is at a loss to explain what anything in the anime means.
