Tear Jerker / Resident Alien

Go To

  • It's hard not to feel for Max trying to get anyone to listen to how there's an alien monster hiding among them.
    • The scenes of Max's parents convinced their son is suffering some breakdown are heart-wrenching. They really do worry he's lost his mind while Max is trying to get them to realize his life is literally in danger from this alien.
  • At the end of "Secrets", there is the flashback to a teenage Asta giving up her baby Jay for adoption.
  • In "Birds of a Feather", Harry opens up to Asta about why he came to Patience - his wife died and he took a job that would take him as far away from home as possible. The worst part? His species don't have emotions, or at least don't express them, so it never occurred to him that he might have taken his assignment out of grief, and now he's stuck 46 light years away from home, with no way of immediately getting back, in a body that can feel grief and homesickness, and he has no training for how to deal with those emotions.
    • The same episode has Harry matter-of-factly reveal to Asta's family how Jay is the teenage daughter Asta gave up years ago...which was something they never knew about. This gets her a What the Hell, Hero? from the others on her keeping it quiet but they do come around to how Asta couldn't take care of her then and thought Jay would be better off with another family.
  • Jay upset to discover Asta is her mother. Less the fact she was given up for adoption and more that Asta never told her and realizing Jimmy is her father.
  • D'arcy coming over to Harry's with a bottle of wine, clearly wanting to get closer...then seeing him with Isabelle, the woman D'arcy had just started to consider a friend.
  • D'arcy's flashback to when she shattered her leg, and how much agony she was in.
  • Harry's reaction when Asta tells him they're not friends.
  • The Octopus, #42 dies. Harry is totally broken up about it and even tries to give him mouth-to-mouth. Then, he tells Harry to honor his life by eating him, which is still sad, while also darkly humorous.
  • Asta, being traumatized over killing Tanner Corrington, who attempted to kill Harry, who saved the alien, while doing Tanner's autopsy, has a panic attack, which leads to her breaking down in Harry's office. This manipulation of memory causes Harry to erase her memory to relieve her of the trauma, but she ends up forgetting her promise to take Jay out for her birthday, which leaves Jay thinking she was stood up on her birthday.
  • Asta visiting her real mother is one long tearjerking scene from start to finish. It's plain Asta has been telling herself for decades that her mother gave her up because she couldn't afford to raise her, to see to it that she got a better life, to try and break a cycle of abuse, etc. She's desperately trying to connect with her mom, only to slowly realize that her mom gave her up because she just couldn't be bothered. She never gave Asta another thought and is completely indifferent to finally meeting her. Asta puts on a brave face but later breaks down completely when talking to D'arcy.
