    Magic Knights Entrance Exam Arc
  • Asta becoming depressed when he learns that he has absolutely no mana, with his dream of becoming the Wizard King crushed. Luckily, Yuno snaps him out of it soon.
  • Noelle being unable to control her magic can be all boiled down to her tragic past: her mother Acier died giving birth to her, which understandably led to a life of misery for the rest of Noelle's family.
  • The terrified villagers pleading for help, and being threatened simply for being peasants in the Forsaken Realm.

    Dungeon Exploration Arc
  • Luck's past. He was raised by an emotionally distant mother who didn't show him any love until he defeated a noble at a school magic tournament. She encouraged him to become stronger and keep winning, causing him to have the pathological desire to fight that he has today.
  • Noelle and Yuno calling out to Asta as he passed out from a shard to the gut courtesy of Mars.

    Royal Capital Assault Arc
  • Noelle is publicly ridiculed by her siblings like they did to her in the past. If it wasn't for Asta standing up for her, Noelle's life would have been even more miserable.

Eye of the Midnight Sun Encounter Arc
  • Gauche's backstory. His parents were killed for their wealth, and him and his sister were forced into the streets. He then had to steal to provide for them both, which caused him to land in jail until he joined the Magic Knights. After this he became unwilling to trust anybody and considers everyone to be selfish, with him only caring for his younger sister as a result.

    Underwater Temple Arc
  • The reason why elves no longer exist. Licht, their leader, was to wed Tetia, a human woman whose older brother was the First Wizard King, and he even impregnated her and hoped that their child could serve as a bridge bringing the two races together. Instead, on their wedding, someone assumed to be a human with Light Magic, attacked everyone there and killed all of them.
  • Kahono, who takes pride in her beautiful singing voice, has her throat crushed by Vetto, who also slices off the leg of her brother Kiato, a dancer, essentially crushing their dreams.

    Forest of Witches Arc
  • When the Witch Queen is using Asta to try and kill everyone, Noelle and Vanessa can only watch in despair at what the Queen is planning to do.
  • Vanessa desperately tries to bargain with her mother one last time to let Asta and her friends go just as the queen's planning to kill Noelle. But she refuses and merely taunts Vanessa. The horrified and tearful look on Vanessa's face says it all.
  • Before Rouge stops Asta from killing Noelle, Vanessa can only watch in horror as the Queen uses Asta to first behead Noelle. When that fails, Asta stabs her in the stomach.
  • The Witch Queen's farewell to Vanessa, especially when she tells her daughter that she can come back to the forest at anytime. One has to feel sorry for the Queen at this point; the Queen even looks visibly sad when Vanessa leaves in the anime.

    Royal Knights Arc
  • After Noelle finally learns the truth about Acier, the former laments that no one ever told anything about her since Acier's Death by Childbirth understandably caused the Silva siblings to mock Noelle for her indirect involvement. Ouch.
  • Zora's backstory. His father was a kind man who became the first peasant Magic Knight. He then died, with Zora finding out that his own comrades killed him because he was a peasant. It's understandable how he became the vengeful, cynical person he is now.

    Elf Reincarnation Arc
  • The death of Julius Novachrono. He gets unceremoniously stabbed by Patry while the latter is fighting Yami. Then, Julius wistfully admits his regrets as he tells Yami to protect the kingdom.
  • Asta apologizes to Rufel for the past humans' massacre of the elves. As Rufel is exorcised, he recalls his memories of the elves interacting with Lumiere, wishing that he could have been friends with humans.
  • Droit realizes that the reincarnation is intensifying the elves' hatred of humans and willingly gets exorcised. As he's exorcised he comforts his little sister Eclat and apologizes to her.
  • The reveal that Zagred is behind the elves' massacre, causing untold suffering between the humans and elves all to obtain a body. Patry finding this out pushes him to despair and become a Dark Elf.
  • Lumiere's past is extremely tragic. He had his magic tool meant for equality used for evil by Zagred, who killed his sister and forced his best friend Licht to turn into a demon, with Licht pleading Lumiere to kill him.
  • Secré's life thus far. She was shunned for her seemingly useless magic and then forced to give up her humanity to seal Zagred and save Lumiere's life. She would then spend the next 500 years as a bird, unable to speak and watching over the Clover Kingdom all to prepare for this.
  • Lumiere bidding farewell before dying. Secré tells him it was an honor serving him and even asks to join him, with him turning her down so that she may experience the future.

    Heart Kingdom Joint Struggle Arc
  • Zenon and his Dark Disciples' attack on Golden Dawn leaves half its members including Hamon and Siren dead and the surviving near-dead, with Bell crying and begging Yuno not to die. Although the near-dead survive thanks to Vangeance, the loss is great and Yuno can only scream in frustration after, wondering if he was stronger.
  • Grey crying that she's unable to heal Gauche, who's been stabbed by Dante's sword. Made moreso in retrospect after the next chapter, which reveals that she's in love with him.
  • Before she joined the Black Bulls, Grey was tormented by her stepmother and stepsisters, who made her do all the house's chores and repeatedly called her ugly. When she used her magic to look like her stepsisters they attacked her, forcing her to run away from home. It's no wonder she's the Shrinking Violet with low self esteem she is in the present.
  • Lolopechka seeing herself as being a failure as a queen, understandably crying when she admits that she's scared and doesn’t want to die from Megicula's curse.
  • Lolopechka crying when she sees that Undine, the one who has always been closest to her, be cursed, breaking her spirit and making her no longer able to fight.
  • Yami being captured by Zenon. His squad can only desperately try to save him to no avail. He can only smile at them, unsure if he will ever see them again, as he is forced through Zenon's portal. The chapter ends with their horrified reactions as they see him get captured and Asta yelling in anguish over the loss of their captain.
  • The aftermath of Yami's capture has Finral and Vanessa looking absolutely depressed. When told that he isn't strong enough to rescue Yami, Asta recalls his devil telling him that it's his fault for being weak and cries, wondering if he was stronger.

    Spade Kingdom Raid Arc
  • Liebe's backstory is incredibly tragic. Born without any magic, he was abused by other devils every day in the underworld despite being so young, with not a day going by where he didn't bleed. He then found a happy life with his loving adopted human mother Licita, who was then killed by Lucifero when he tried to take over Liebe's body. The last thing she does before dying is sealing him in the grimoire to protect him, telling her dear son to live. Liebe can only look heartbroken cry out "Mom" before he's sealed. It's no wonder he's hellbent on killing every devil in revenge.
  • Licita recalling how she had to give up Asta at the orphanage to protect him from her magic and life draining, vowing to not lose another son. It's saddening to learn that she had treated Liebe with the love she couldn't give to her own child, and that she was in danger of losing another son when Lucifero tries to take over his body.
  • Nacht's backstory is tragic. A delinquent all his life, he found joy in being a prodigy in Devil Magic after being chosen by his parents to be the House of Faust's heir. Then, when he got in over his head, he performed a devil-binding ritual of the supreme devil Lucifugus, who proceeded to kill the other ritual participants (including his parents) and forced Nacht's brother Morgen to sacrifice his life to stop it. Nacht can only hold Morgen as he dies, telling Nacht it was his dream for the two to be Magic Knights of shadow and light. And Nacht can only think of how his presence would have tainted Morgen's light, and begs the gods to save him and think that he should have died instead, only to realize that he shouldn't be begging the gods after his life of amorality and irresponsibility.
"The very picture of a good guy. Straight-forward, so dazzling I couldn't even look at you. That was what you were like and I... I really loved you. Even if I couldn't shine I wanted you to do it. If I was beside you it felt as if I'd defile your light, so I-"
  • Surprisingly, Zenon's backstory ends up being incredibly sad. He was once in the same position as both Yuno and Asta, his bone magic getting him constantly beaten up and mocked by bullies until one day he befriended another boy named Allen, who wanted nothing more then the Chief of Spade's Magic Defense Force in order to bring the Kingdom to a brighter future. Just like Asta and Yuno, Zenon also shared his best friends dream, leading to the two of them forming a Friendly Rivalry as they trained and perfected their respective magics, with Zenon even refusing to become a Devil Host like his siblings. Unfortunately, it all falls down when the two of them are sent to investigate a dungeon and find a powerful devil inside who proves too much for them. Knowing that the devil will kill them and escape to wreck havoc on the Kingdom, Zenon is forced to stab the devil through Allen, killing both of them. The event convinces a now-broken Zenon that power is the only thing that matters, leading him to enough of a Despair Event Horizon that he makes a deal with the devil Beelzebub.

    The Ultimate Wizard King Arc
  • Noelle and Mimosa's reactions to Asta's apparent death at the hands of Lucius. In the following chapter, it looks like they've practically lost their will to live. The other Magic Knight members in the same meeting, knowing both their most valuable asset is possibly dead and the enemy they're dealing with is magnitudes worse than the Dark Triad and Lucifero, don't fare with this any better. It's not even like when the Dark Triad captures Yami and Vangeance where everyone just reacts with enthusiasm to kick the Dark Triad's ass and get them back. Nobody shouts or screams in agony over hearing the bad news; the only thing shown on the faces of the magic knights who valiantly fought the Dark Triad and Lucifero is now the face of pure despair.
  • While Asta appears to be ready to get back into action after waking up in the Land of the Sun, it quickly becomes apparent that his brutal defeat against Lucius (delivered by Sister Lily's hand no less) has left a severe impact on him, seriously doubting his abilities for the first time in the story, his confidence shattered. Even with Ryuya's offer of training, he shows doubt at his ability to grow stronger, and in his fight with one of Lucius's Angels, his greatest fear manifests as an image of himself admitting to thinking Yuno could have done a better job in the same scenario.
    • Though it wasn't as big, Ryuya notes that Lucius's surprise attack, and subsequent brainwashing of Sister Lily to twist the knife further, came straight after the latter rejected Asta's final confession. While he took it on the chin, it was still hard for him to hear and everything that followed happened too fast for him to process it properly, such that the usually energic ball of muscle becomes visibly depressed at any reminders of his old caretaker.
