James makes a lot of pop-cultural references in his many fanfics, but here are some noteworthy ones.
- "Sonic x Sally: Swim Lessons and Lakeside Romance"
contains a reference to Austin Powers.Sonic: Yeah, baby, yeah! Do I make you happy? Do I make you energetic? YEAH! - The ending of "Meggy's Metamorphosis Nightmare" makes a reference to Tomb Raider II, with Meggy taking a shower only to discover a perverted guest looking at her naked body, and scaring him away with her weapon. It should be noted that, while The Multiverse does show up in a lot of his stories, and Tomb Raider is a franchise that James writes for, this story in particular doesn't touch any other universes outside of those already covered in SMG4.
- Before making the finishing shot in "Senbo's Turf War", he says this classic line from Terminator 2: Judgment Day:Senbo: Hasta la vista, baby!
- "TIE Trouble" has a rather obvious one to King Kong, with Donkey Kong climbing the Empire State Building while getting shot at by Darth Vader's forces. Here's James' drawing illustrating the scene.
- "Uncertainty" ends with another reference to Terminator 2: Judgment Day.Tari: (thinking) The future is not set, there is no fate but what we make for ourselves. There is no need for uncertainty, we will make the best of it every day in our lives. And whatever comes our way, we will face the future, together...
- "Mario and The Last Minion" opens with a reference to The Simpsons, where Mario inadvertently spoils The Super Mario Bros. Movie for those who haven't seen it.
- "Tari's Savanah Animal Rescue" has two:
- One of the poachers says this in reference to Finding Nemo:"I'm seein' fish tonight..."
- After Tari defeats one of the poachers, another says this in reference to Zelda: Wand of Gamelon."He's out. Let's get outta here."
- One of the poachers says this in reference to Finding Nemo:
- The first words in "Lara Croft Among Us" are "Space. The final frontier..."
- Wonder Woman's costume for "Hak'o Halloween Night" is Princess Leia's slave outfit from Return of the Jedi.
- In "Bob Lives, Bois!", Bob says "I'm still alive motherfucker", which is a reference to The Negotiator.
