Sandbox / YMMV Marvel Comics Storm

Go To

  • Broken Base: Storm and Black Panther's marriage. One part of the fandom absolutely loved the idea of wedding Marvel's two oldest and most famous African superheroes and were saddened when they broke up. An equally avid hatedom despised the idea, citing it as a case of Strangled by the Red String and reeking of tokenism, and were ecstatic (or at least thought it was the most natural result) when the two of them later divorced after the Avengers vs X-Men event and she made it plain afterwards that it was over. In the years since the breakup detractors towards their relationship have softened, with more acceptance of Storm appearing with T’Challa as Amicable Exes in his comics. Notably there was great excitement at the prospect T’Challa meeting Storm in MCU, which turned to sadness as Chadwick Boseman’s passing meant that won’t happen.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: She's one of the most prominent and popular black superheroes of all time, and Marvel's most prominent female superhero.
  • Escapist Character: One of the most overtly escapist in the entire X-Men mythos. She has won the Superpower Lottery; her powers over the weather make her easily one of the most powerful X-Men. She is also worshipped as a goddess, has incredible skills in both unarmed combat and thieving, led the team on several occasions, and is heart-stoppingly gorgeous. She keeps attracting lovers and admirers of both genders, and even some of her enemies want her.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Her and Logan. Fans of the pairing cite that Opposites Attract, and that her reserve and idealism would balance out his Anti-Hero tendencies, while his more earthy, passionate nature would keep her stable and grounded.
    • Ascended Fanon: One What If? issue had the X-Men long since trapped on another planet where Logan and she have a child. Likewise, X-Men: The Animated Series episode involved an alternate timeline, created by Xavier's assassination in college, where Storm and Logan were married. There was also Logan/Storm Ship Tease in the X-Men: Evolution cartoon series.
    • Another is her and Yukio
  • Les Yay: With Callisto, her rival for leadership of the Morlocks, and Yukio, a Japanese thief.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Uncanny X-Men#96. Storm destroys the Cairn.
    • Uncanny X-Men#97. Storm dueling with the brain-washed Polaris. When Polaris condescends the confrontation, the enraged Storm completely defeats her:
Polaris: We're too evenly matched, Storm. I guess we'll just have to call this game a draw.
Storm: A...Game? Is that all this is to you, Polaris- A Game?! You attacked us without warning, without provocation. You sought our deaths without a thought for the innocents that might be endangered- even slain- by your attack! And you dare call this- A Game!?! This is No Game, Polaris!
    • Uncanny X-Men#103. Storm is rendered catatonic by her claustrophobia and chained up with the rest of the X-Men. One look at the real sky, however, breaks Storm from her funk. She instantly summons up a hurricane and frees herself and her teammates.
      • When Colossus is finding difficulty removing Wolverine's Leg chain, Storm- a past lock-picker- simply opens it.
    • Uncanny X-Men#142. Storm reasons with Wolverine about using his claws on an unarmed opponent:
    Storm: Wolverine. Sheathe your claws.
Wolverine: Not a chance. We're in the middle of a fight, Storm. I'm in no mood fer debate.
Storm: Sheathe them, or use them on me.
Wolverine: That can be arranged, Babe!
Storm: I am leader of the X-Men. While that is so, you will use your claws when I command. No other time.
Wolverine: I wouldn't take that from Cyclops!
Storm: You will take it from me. You possess speed, strength. Your unbreakable adamantium skeleton makes you nearly invulnerable. You should not need your claws except in the most extreme of situations. Against the deadliest and most powerful of foes.
Wolverine: All right, Storm. I'll do it yer way. For now. But this conversation isn't finished. Not by a long shot.
    • Uncanny X-Men#159. Standing up to Dracula.
    • Uncanny X-Men#170. At the beginning of their duel for Morlock leadership, Callisto gives Storm her knife, arrogantly throwing it beside her. Without breaking her expression or pose, Storm catches the knife.
  • My Real Daddy: Len Wein and Dave Cockrum created Storm, but it was Chris Claremont who developed the character.
  • Never Live It Down: “Do you know what happens to a toad when it's struck by lightning?”. That infamously cheesy one-liner has haunted Storm for decades and is one of the things most frequently brought up in mainstream discourse when talking about her character. Even Lego Marvel Superheroes even made reference to the scene, with Storm’s introduction involving Toad wrapping her up with his Overly-Long Tongue before Storm fries him with lightning.
  • Pandering to the Base: Storm's divorce from Black Panther following the end of the Avengers vs. X-Men event is widely seen as a present to the vocal detractors of the pairing.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Storm's marriage to Black Panther was widely seen as this by the pair's detractors. Not helping was that writer Reginald Hudlin basically built the marriage out of a two-issue cameo from Christopher Priest's run where their "romance" was treated as an unrealistic-but-cathartic childhood fantasy that would never actually work in any real way, and included Storm explicitly comparing Panther to Magneto. This was either alleviated or exacerbated (depending on your point of view) by the Storm flashback miniseries which came out around the same time and retconned the aforementioned two-issue cameo crossover to establish that Storm and T'Challa did have an earlier romantic relationship when they were teenagers.
  • Theme Pairing: Thor/Storm has a substantial following due to the fact that both of them are associated with the weather, spurred on by the fact that they are a couple in the spin-off Marvel Adventures universe.
