Stella and Sam is the name of an award-winning series of children's picture books by Canadian author/illustrator Marie-Louise Gay first published in 1999. The series consists of a mainline series simply known as Stella, with a short spinoff series titled Sam, and focuses on the eponymous children - the imaginative and fun-loving 9-year-old Stella and her curious and adventurous 4-year-old brother Sam, both of whom love to explore their outdoors surroundings, learn about their world, and play with their imaginations together.

The books are:

  • Stella series:
    • Stella, Star of the Sea (1999)
    • Stella, Queen of the Snow (2000)
    • Stella, Fairy of the Forest (2002)
    • Stella, Princess of the Sky (2004)
    • When Stella Was Very, Very, Small (2009)
    • Read Me A Story, Stella (2013)

  • Sam series:
    • Good Morning, Sam (2003)
    • Good Night, Sam (2003)
    • What Are You Doing, Sam? (2006)

The books have been very successful and been met with quite a bit of praise from critics. Perhaps then it comes as no surprise that they were given an Animated Adaptation in 2011 for the preschool demographic. Specifically, the Stella and Sam cartoon was produced by Canadian studio Radical Sheep Productions (previously known for The Big Comfy Couch and later to be known for Fangbone! and The Bagel and Becky Show, incidentally both also adapted from children's books) and brought to life by Mercury Filmworks. The cartoon series originally aired on Family Jr., running for 2 seasons and 52 episodes. Reruns later popped up in the United States on Sprout (now Universal Kids) in 2013 and Qubo in 2018, as well as CBC Kids in Canada (also in 2018).

Tropes

  • Animated Adaptation: The Stella and Sam cartoon series maintains the watercolor style of the books and the central character dynamic, but also adds a few additional kids for Stella and Sam to interact with in the form of their friends.
  • Arcadia: The books and cartoon are set in rural Manitoba, giving the two children plenty of space to frolick and explore, while also playing into the series' innocent, carefree nature.
  • Canine Companion: Stella and Sam's pet dog Fred is always accompanying them on their adventures and happily joining in on their fun.
  • Cheerful Child: Both Stella and Sam are sweet, innocent, fun-loving children, but Sam is especially emphasized as such, with his playfulness, naivety, and admiration for his big sister.
  • Children Are Innocent: While the series' general tone and visuals evoke this, Sam especially embodies the idea. His wide-eyed naivety prompts him to ask his big sister many, many questions, and Stella is always happy to answer them - even if her explanations are generally on the whimsical and fantastical side.
  • Constantly Curious: Sam is always asking questions to Stella about the world, and Stella uses her imagination to come up with answers to them.
  • Cool Big Sis: Stella to Sam. Stella is always the one who leads Sam on their adventures, regaling him with her imagination, answering his questions, and sharing special things with him, like her old sweater or a special breakfast.
  • Mr. Imagination: Stella and Sam are both very imaginative, but especially Stella. Many episodes of the Animated Adaptation feature the children playing and pretending, using their imaginations to bring themselves on adventures, while the books often have Stella using her vivid imagination to come up with answers to Sam's many questions.
  • Name and Name: The Animated Adaptation is named for both main characters. In contrast, the books, while featuring both children, are named only for Stella.
  • Slice of Life: The show follows in the footsteps of Nelvana productions like Little Bear and Franklin, showing the playful and carefree lives of the two young protagonists as they have fun with their imaginations and explore their world.
