Wick check of Raised as the Opposite Gender, after seeing several examples of people copying over examples of trans characters after transgender was made a useful notes page instead of a trope.

Correct use: a character is deliberately raised by its guardians as the opposite gender than its sex would have indicated. (aka, raising an AFAB character as a boy, an AMAB character as a girl)

Correct use

1. Characters.Umineko When They Cry Spoilers: Implied. It's shown that Sayo was raised as a girl and there are several hints that she may in fact have been designated male at birth. The Episode 8 manga skews heavily towards this interpretation.
2. IRejectYourReality.Anime And Manga: In Urusei Yatsura, Mr. Fujinami Wanted a Son Instead so badly that not only has he forcibly raised his daughter Ryunosuke as a boy, but he's even convinced himself that she's actually a boy.
3. Characters.Dororo Main Characters: Dororo is a girl, but wasn't even aware of it. His parents raised him as a boy that way and didn't tell him otherwise.
4. Characters.Im In Love With The Villainess: She had a twin brother who died as a baby, then her mother decided to have her infected with a gender-bender disease and raised as a prince in order to gain political power.
5. Literature.Patience And Sarah: Since age nine, Sarah's been raised as if she was a boy. Her dad only had daughters and wanted a surrogate son, so he decided to raise his tallest daughter like a son. Sarah even often refers to herself as a boy.
6. Heir Club for Men: This is why Ryuunosuke Fujinami was Raised as the Opposite Gender in Urusei Yatsura; her father was obsessed with the idea that only a boy could be a worthy heir to his family legacy of... running a ratty little beachside store. This is used for roughly equal parts comedy and to paint Mr. Fujinami as creepy and insane.
7. Recap.Inside No 9 S 6 E 4 Hurry Up And Wait: That's what James believes has happened to Ryan/Bev in order to conceal his identity. Turns out James was completely mistaken.
8. Characters.How I Met Your Mother Main Characters: Her father raised her as a boy until she was 16.
9. Literature.The Wasp Factory: The twist. Frank is really a girl.
10. TabletopGame.Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay: Marquis Frederic Desfleuve, ruler of Castle Desfleuve in Gisoreux. Her mother died giving birth to her, and her father was too heartbroken to ever remarry, so he raised her as a man. She's proven to be an extremely capable lord, and so far the only problem with it is that she doesn't have an heir, and can't exactly produce one without giving her secret away (something that would cause a ton of trouble, as women can't be knights, wear men's clothing, inherit land, etc.).
11. Characters.Queens Blade Rebellion Characters: Her parents hid her real gender and presented her to the world as the heir to the Margrave Kreuz, "Alphonse".
12. Overlady: Kirche and all of her sisters. Their Father is a very powerful (both personally and politically), self-centered (and/or incredibly stupid) man with extremely sexist views on women who had no luck siring (legitimate) sons, so he raised his daughters as sons, and considers the female gender as a flaw they can actually grow out of. Kirche didn't even know she was a girl until she was 9.
13. Recap.The Nostalgia Critic S 2 E 2: He went through being Raised as the Opposite Gender for an unknown length of time.
14. Theatre.Prince Kaguya: Maru and Akahoshi raise Kaguya as a girl for his safety at his mother's request.
15. Characters.Princess Knight: She is known as Prince Sapphire because it was the only way to keep the kingdom out of the evil Duke Duralumin's hands.
16. Characters.Kono Suba Supporting Characters: It's later revealed what her Freudian Excuse is: she's secretly a princess and her parents raised her as a boy, since they expected one for their firstborn heir. This ended up attracting bullies who picked on her for her short height, unbecoming of someone who was supposedly male.
17. Creator.Jacqueline Wilson: In The Diamond Girls, the main character's mother tries to raise her new baby girl as a boy; having been convinced while she was pregnant that she would finally have a son this time (she already has four daughters.) She does get found out and agree to stop the charade.
18. Characters.Sumomo Mo Momo Mo: Tragic due to the fact that, due to how they were raised, they didn't even know their biological sex until someone outside of their family told them.

Trans character exists

1. ComicBook.The Woods: Sander, who was born female. His family is accepting and very protective of him, especially considering if he was captured by Taisho, he would be killed for being different.
2. Characters.Sense 8 August Eighth Cluster: She was born to the name and identity of Michael Marks, but finally decided to be true to herself at some point in her teens.
3. Characters.The Legend Of Zelda Book Of The Traitor: He's a transman who was christened Zelda at birth and only began living as a man within the last couple years. He has been on hormone replacement therapy for about half a year at the start of the comic.
4. Music.The Mechanisms: Arthur's kid, Morgause, is assigned female at birth, and grows up into a young man who takes the name Mordred.
5. Characters.Technobabylon: When asked about her past, casually mentions attending a school that Charlie knows to be all-boys. She apparently "fit right in" at the time.

ZCE, Random potholes, and mentions

1. Fridge.The Beautiful Skies Of Houou High: Kei has a little sister, so why would Kei need to be the one to give their mom grandchildren? Unless...
2. TheNostalgiaCritic.Tropes D To G: Critic goes between bisexual and a Transparent Closet, and has been Raised as the Opposite Gender, Malcolm has a big crush on Critic as does Jim (who is according to Malcolm, also a transgender man), Rachel had sex with the female Eight Crazy Nights, Hyper is hot for Rachel and Carrie Fisher (and also has some hints of genderfluidity such as her desire to grow stubble), and Tamara lampshades in Jupiter Ascending that they all like playing different genders.
3. Fanfic.Wandering Of A Sword Hero: Keel, due to being Raised as the Opposite Gender, had to be explained the differences between boys and girls by Sadeena, of all people. It gave them a Thousand-Yard Stare that lasted around five minutes before apparently managing to purge the memory out of their brain.
4. TheNostalgiaCritic.Tropes H To N: And to mock a too-brief Picard character moment, he starts stalking about when he was a little girl in Alaska before the room shakes to stop him.
5. Age Is Relative: Ozma's Gender Bender self from when she was Raised as the Opposite Gender, Tip, is consistently depicted as a little boy to emphasise his childish nature.
6. HeroicBSOD.Anime And Manga: And Tohru also has another in the manga, when Kureno explains who Akito ACTUALLY is. After that, the poor girl stands on her own in the snow for quite a while until her friends fetch her.
7. Mars and Venus Gender Contrast: Prince Kaguya: It's said that the gods gift men with strength and women with kindness, which makes both happy, and that Kaguya is happier than anyone else because he's Raised as the Opposite Gender.

9. Series.How I Met Your Mother: Robin, who was practically Raised as the Opposite Gender, was taught by her father how to shoot when she was a kid. When Marshall is depressed from his break-up with Lily, she takes him to a shooting range to cheer him up.

Misuse

1. Characters.The Big Bang Theory Penny: Her father wanted a son so badly that he forced her to play all sorts of sports so he could pretend she was a boy. This is Wanted a Son Instead.
