Recap / X-Men S4 E10 "One Man's Worth, Part 2"

This episode provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Heroism: Trevor Fitzroy in the comics is a stone-cold killer completely beyond redemption. Here, he's more of a Lovable Rogue who is a villain under threat of death, as opposed to comics Fitzroy who's just in it For the Evulz.
  • Attack Its Weak Point: The X-Men finally figure out how to defeat Nimrod, the nearly-indestructible super-Sentinel that's been hunting them. Nimrod can regenerate itself From a Single Cell, but once they destroy the time travel device on its arm, it cannot remain in the past and is banished back to its future.
  • Bad Future: The darkest one yet is the Xavier-less version of Bishop's future, in which mutants are all but extinct, and Forge is a cyborg slave of Master Mold.
  • Being Good Sucks: Reading their minds, Xavier senses that someone doesn't want their mission to succeed, and Bishop immediately accuses Logan.
Logan: I feel the way I feel, bub! That don't mean I'd turn traitor.
  • Big Bad: The world-ruling Master Mold of the future is behind Fitzroy and Nimrod.
  • Big Good: After the situation is resolved, Bishop reflects on Xavier being this.
Bishop: Wow. It's incredible how one kid could mean so much to so many people.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Xavier is saved and the timeline is restored. However, the alternate Storm and Logan are only kept existing by their time travel bracelets, which causes them to exist outside time. Instead of delaying the inevitable, the two deactivate their own bracelets and share one last kiss.
  • Contract on the Hitman: After Fitzroy is successful in killing Xavier and returns to the future, Master Mold sends Nimrod to kill him and Bantam.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Fitzroy, once he finds out Master Mold has ordered Nimrod to kill him. A downplayed example as he's mostly just trying to save himself rather than actually having a change of heart.
  • I Warned You: After they overhear Master Mold ordering Nimrod to kill them once the time machine is destroyed, Bantam says this to Fitzroy.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Bishop's solo departure sets up both his and Shard's roles in the "Beyond Good and Evil" four-parter.
  • Karma Houdini: Other than getting yelled at by Bishop, Fitzroy doesn't get in any real trouble despite killing Xavier and fucking over the entire mutant race, and while he does eventually help undo Xavier's assassination and fix the timeline, it's done entirely to save his own worthless hide once he learns Master Mold plans to off him as well once his mission is complete.
  • Mistreatment-Induced Betrayal: Master Mold's decision to kill Fitzroy prompts him into betraying his boss to help the heroes. Better still, when he succumbs to Death Equals Redemption, he records a message for the good guys to play for his younger counterpart that convinces him to betray Master Mold and stops the whole mess from happening.
  • Mythology Gag: Future Forge's costume is based off his look in the Age of Apocalypse.
  • Near-Villain Victory: After killing Xavier outright in the last episode, Fitzroy almost assassinates him again in this one, along with all the other heroes. The only thing that stops his (and Master Mold's) victory is that the future Fitzroy recorded a warning message to himself, convincing him to stand down. This allows Wolverine to throw the bomb that killed Xavier the last time out to a safe distance of detonation.
  • Never Say "Die": In the comics, Fitzroy's powers usually kill his victims. Here, it's explicitly pointed out (several times) that his powers only knock his victims unconscious for a day or two.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: After they fail to prevent Xavier's assassination, Bishop chews out alternate Logan for causing a ruckus instead of protecting Xavier and possibly ensuring that Bishop's own future is all but gone.
  • Note to Self: Fitzroy records one to his past self to keep him from assassinating Xavier and prevent the Bad Future in which Master Mold rules the world unopposed.
  • Orcus on His Throne: As is typical for Master Mold, who just sits on his giant throne through the whole story.
  • Properly Paranoid: Bantam never trusted Master Mold to uphold his end of the deal and kept trying to warn Fitzroy.
  • Ret-Gone: Alternate Storm and Logan, due to both deactivating their time travel bracelets. Xavier does remember them, though.
  • Rewarded as a Traitor Deserves: Master Mold orders Nimrod to kill Fitzroy once Bishop and the others are eliminated. Bantam saw this coming.
  • Say My Name: As they disappear in a flash of light, alternate Logan screams his wife's name. His echo can be heard by Logan and Ororo of the regular timeline, leaving them briefly confused.
  • Set Right What Once Went Wrong: The team tries once again to stop the assassination of Xavier, and this time they succeed thanks to the aid of Fitzroy himself.
  • Ship Tease: Between Logan and Ororo of the regular timeline.
Wolverine: Thanks for the tumble, Storm. We ought to wrestle more often!
Storm: Now, Logan. Some women might think that you were... flirting!
Wolverine: Hrm. Lucky you know me better'n that!
  • Together in Death: The alternate Storm and Logan share one last hug and kiss as they deactivate their time travel bracelets, resulting in both ending up Ret-Gone.
  • "You!" Exclamation: After Xavier senses someone doesn't want their mission to succeed, Bishop does this to Logan.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Master Mold decides that Fitzroy is no longer useful to him after killing off Xavier and sends Nimrod to finish him off.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: After Xavier is saved and thus the timeline restored, alternate Storm and Logan remain in existence only because their bracelets allow them to exist outside of time, but the devices' batteries only last for a couple of days.
