Go To

The episode starts with a split sequence between Wolverine, wearing a suit, fighting against "Scott" and the wedding of Scott Summers and Jean Grey. Wolverine stabs "Scott," which is revealed to be a robot, and then he's blasted from behind by a Scott lookalike giant robot, whom he beheads.

At the wedding, Gambit flirts with Rogue, but she doesn't reciprocate. Scott is talking to the reverend, who declares that he will not be attending the reception and then exits the church; he's revealed to be Morph, who somehow survived the Sentinels' attack in the series premiere.

Tropes:

  • Actually a Doombot: The Cyclops Wolverine is fighting at the beginning of the episode is actually a robot that's part of the Danger Room training program.
  • Back from the Dead: Morph
  • Book Ends: This episode opens with the introduction of Graydon Creed and ends with that of Mr. Sinister, the Big Bad Ensemble of Season 2.
  • Bouquet Toss: Rogue tells Jubilee she's too young to try catching Jean's bouquet. Not that it matters, since the bouquet travels over their heads and lands in Beast's hands instead.
  • The Cameo: Ape and Tommy of the Morlocks appear during the Friends of Humanity riot.
  • Composite Character: Invoked with the second foe Wolverine fights in the Danger Room, a Sentinel with features similar to Cyclops and his powers.
  • Deus Exit Machina: Wolverine doesn't attend Scott and Jean's wedding because he's in a murderous sulk, preventing him from smelling out Morph.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: The FOH riots target mutant-friendly businesses, similarly to Kristallnacht, in which the Nazis attacked Jewish-owned places.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends on a cliffhanger with Gambit incapacitated, Beast attacked by the Danger Room, Storm injured, and Jubilee in the hands of the FOH.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Mole appears for the first time and is attacked by the Friends of Humanity.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Unlike most cases in Marvel products, where cops are usually all too happy to turn their guns on the heroes, the ones who shoot at Storm hesitate when Morph impersonates their captain and tells them to shoot.
  • False Flag Operation: The Friends of Humanity arrange for one of its members to attack the announcement of President Kelly's pardon to Beast under the disguise of a stereotypical feral mutant with fur, claws, and fangs. Later, they edit the recording of a FOH attack to make it seem as if Beast is the one causing the violence.
  • Family-Friendly Firearms: As always, the show uses laser rifles rather than ones with bullets, meaning Storm getting blasted just puts her in the hospital, not the morgue.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: Averted, as we see the scene from "Night of the Sentinels" of Morph getting blasted by a Sentinel replayed without it this time. Although, since the story was rewritten for him to live, it's not quite as horrific as the original episode implied. He simply gets sent tumbling into the ground unconscious with the front of his uniform blown open, but no blood or serious injury shown.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Logan and his attitude toward Jean. Rather than take her choosing to marry Cyclops with grace, he spends the wedding in the Danger Room eviscerating simulations of Scott while screaming "YOU CAN'T HAVE HER!"
  • Kick the Dog: In the middle of the FOH's pogrom, they're shown attacking one guy who tries explaining he's not even a particularly flashy Mutant; he's just hairy. The Friends don't care.
  • Lawyer-Friendly Cameo: Two of the guests at Scott and Jean's wedding are drawn to resemble J. Jonah Jameson and Doctor Strange.
  • The Resenter: Jubilee wasn't even with the X-Men when Morph died, but he sends her off to be lynched anyway for "taking my place".
  • Schmuck Bait: Gambit falls hook, line and sinker for Morph pretending to be Rogue and claiming she could touch him. He decides to kiss the actual Rogue while she's asleep and gets knocked out for his troubles.
  • Split Personality: Morph suffers from one as a result of the trauma of death. He also engages in Talking to Themself as he wants to keep his evil side from targeting the X-Men.
  • Wham Shot: The reverend suddenly turning into Morph.
