Where the Indian Walks (in French Là où va l'Indien) is the second album of the comic book series XIII. It was published in 1985.
XIII has identified the girl next to him on a photograph as Kim Rowland, the widow of Captain Steve Rowland. So he contacts the U.S. Army to get more information about her. Soon General Carrington shows up and reveals to XIII that he is Steve Rowland, a highly trained commando. So, General Carrington sends him back to his family house, where XIII will meet his father Jeremie, his mother-in-law Felicity and his uncle Matt.
Where the Indian Walks provides examples of:
- Action Girl: Jones fights XIII who is a superior fighter.
- Amnesiac Dissonance: XIII discovers that Steve Rowland was a racist. Subverted: it will be revealed that he is not the real Steve Rowland.
- Big Damn Heroes: XIII shows up just in time to prevent an angry mob from mauling the Rowlands.
- Black Widow: Felicity plans the murder of her husband, then kills her lover Matt.
- Cain and Abel: Matt plans to kill his brother Jeremie.

- Carrington arrives just in time to pick XIII up on the roof when he is chased by the Sheriff.

- Comic-Book Fantasy Casting: General Carrington looks like Lee Marvin and Lieutenant Jones like Whitney Houston.
- Contract on the Hitman: Amos thinks that the conspirators decided to kill XIII after he assassinated William Sheridan because he was recognizable on the amateur film.
- Cool Old Guy: General Carrington does not hesitate to jump into a helicopter to pick XIII up on the roof of the house of the Rowlands.
- Deep South: Southburg is in the deep South. The Rowlands are rich landowners who grows citrus fruits. They have a black servant. Steve Rowland was racist. There is also a sheriff in white suit who handles the business the local way.
- "Eureka!" Moment: When he is looking at Kim Rowland's photograph, XIII suddenly realizes what "where the Indian's going" means.
- Evil Uncle: Matt plans to kill his brother Jeremie and to frame up XIII for the crime. Subverted, because XIII is not his actual nephew.
- Exposition Cut: When XIII meets the Rowlands, he tells them his story. The whole explanation is not shown: we just see XIII sitting at the table telling that he has explained the situation.
- A Father to His Men: Carrington tells XIII he trained him and the link between them is very strong even if he is amnesiac. Therefore, he does not hesitate to help him to escape from the sheriff in Southburg. He does not even ask why the sheriff chases him. Subverted, because it is revealed in S.P.A.D.S. that Carrington did not train XIII and that he helps him for other reasons.
- Florence Nightingale Effect: Jeremie Rowland married Felicity, the nurse who took care of him. Jeremie's love was probably sincere, but Felicity was clearly faking her feelings for Jeremie.
- Four-Star Badass: General Carrington does not hesitate to jump into a helicopter to pick XIII up on the roof of the house of the Rowlands.
- Frameup: Felicity frames XIII for the murders of Jeremie and Matt Rowland.
- Gold Digger: Felicity is a young attractive woman who is married with an old handicapped rich landowner.
- He Knows Too Much: This is the reason why the conspirators killed the real Steve Rowland.
- Honey Trap: Carrington suggests Jones to sleep with XIII to get some information.
- Impaled Palm: XIII throws a knife through the hand of one of the villagers who was assaulting the Rowlands. Later, the villagers want to seek revenge: they try to knock a nail through XIII's hand, but the sheriff stops them.
- Insanity Defense: XIII's lawyer pleads that he was insane when he killed Jeremie and Matt Rowland.
- Jurisdiction Friction: Amos tells the Sheriff not to shoot at XIII, because he wants him alive for reasons of state and the Sheriff is unhappy about it.
- Karma Houdini: Felicity is not punished for the murders of Jeremie and Matt Rowland.
- Lady Macbeth: Felicity. She encourages Matt to kill his brother.
- Let Me Get This Straight...: Before meeting the Rowlands, XIII sums up the situation: Mrs Rowland died, Jeremie is paralyzed, Matt manages the business, etc.
- Long-Lost Relative: Steve Rowland disappeared years ago. He comes back and meets again his father Jeremie and his uncle Matt. He does not recognize them as he is amnesiac. Subverted: it will be revealed that XIII is not the real Steve Rowland.
- Mammy: The Rowlands have an old black servant who is very happy to see Steve Rowland again.
- May–December Romance: The old Jeremie Rowland and the young Felicity, who does not seem to be older than Jeremie's son. Jeremie's love was probably sincere, but Felicity was clearly faking her feelings for Jeremie.
- Meal Ticket: Jeremie Rowland for Felicity.
- Miscarriage of Justice: XIII is innocent, but he is convicted of the murders of Jeremie and Matt Rowland. He is sentenced to life in a high-security asylum.
- Missing Mom: Steve Rowland's mother died in an accident when she came back from his wedding.
- No Name Given: XIII asks Jones's first name and she answers "Lieutenant".
- Our Graphics Will Suck in the Future: David's computer was futuristic in 1985: it is able to identify a lake thanks to the shape of the mountains in the background of a photograph. However, its screen is black and white and just displays messages written in capital letters.
- The Perfect Crime: Amos explains that the conspiracy's plan was perfect: Steve Rowland fakes his death, then he kills President William Sheridan. Who would think the murderer is an officially dead person?
- Previously on…: The Day of the Black Sun is summed up in the first page.
- Rage Against the Reflection: XIII punches the mirror in his bedroom in the military base.
- The Reveal: Kim tells XIII that he is not the real Steve Rowland.
- Second Episode Introduction: General Carrington and Lieutenant Jones, two major characters of the series, appear in this album.
- Secret Test: Jones attacks XIII. A deadly fight ensues. Then General Carrington reveals that it was just a test to assess his fighting skills.
- Shell-Shocked Veteran: The Sheriff thinks that it is the reason why XIII went crazy and killed Jeremie and Matt Rowland.
- The Sheriff: There is one in Southburg. He stops the villagers who were attacking XIII. Later, he tries to arrest him.
- Shoutout: David's computer is named Big Brother.
- Sibling Murder: Matt kills his brother Jeremie.
- Stern Chase: XIII wants to leave Southburg because is afraid that Amos or the Mongoose might find him, but finally he must flee because he is chased by the sheriff.
- Stranger in a Familiar Land: XIII does not feel comfortable in Southburg, in particular in the Rowland family. Subverted, because it is revealed that XIII is not the real Steve Rowland, so Southburg is not his hometown and the Rowlands are not his family.
- This Is the Part Where...: When Jones attacks him, XIII suspects this could be a Secret Test, like in the movies.
- Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: The old and handicapped Jeremie Rowland and the young and attractive Felicity.
- The Vamp: The very attractive Felicity has a relationship with the old Matt only because she wants him to kill her husband Jeremie. Just after Matt kills Jeremie, Felicity kills him.
- Would Hit a Girl: One of the villagers is going to hit Felicity and it prompts XIII to throw a knife at him.
- Wicked Stepmother: Felicity wants to frame Steve Rowland, her stepson, for the murders of Jeremie and Matt Rowland.
- You Have Outlived Your Usefulness:
- Amos thinks that the conspirators have tried to kill XIII since he assassinated President William Sheridan.
- Felicity kills Matt just after he killed Jeremie Rowland.
