Recap / Tuca And Bertie S 1 E 01 The Sugar Bowl

Go To

Bertie has invited her boyfriend Speckle to live in the apartment, so Tuca ends up moving upstairs. In the process, she borrows some sugar from Speckle, and Tuca and Bertie have to retrieve it upon discovering that it is actually the ashes of Speckle's grandmother.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Art Shift: Tuca's journey downstairs to Bertie's apartment is done in the style of an 8-bit video game.
  • Ashes to Crashes: Speckle's grandmother's ashes were in that sugar bowl. Tuca and Bertie go to great lengths to get it back, only to see the ashes baked in a cake in the end.
  • Big "NO!": Bertie lets out one of these as Tuca quite literally drags her back to Pastry Pete's bakery.
  • Bound and Gagged: Pastry Pete's nephew is seen like this thanks to Tuca after the cooking competition.
  • Censor Box: Parodied when Speckle moons Bertie; the black bar falls onto the floor almost immediately after.
  • Good-Times Montage: There's one of Tuca and Bertie living together, starting with getting a couch that's infested with spiders, gleefully spraying bug spray all over it, Tuca bringing a variety of cool things into the living room (a motorcycle, a drumset) to Bertie's disapproval, Tuca making out on the couch with her snake boyfriend, Tuca angrily catching Bertie making out with the same snake boyfriend, Tuca and Bertie happily beating up the snake boyfriend with pillows, filling the apartment with water and swimming in it, and Tuca throwing up after drinking too much with Bertie and Speckle.
  • Hero of Another Story: Parodied with a random background extra who gets introduced with on-screen bullet points just like Tuca, Bertie and Speckle:
    Sandy Q. Piper
    * Rich interior life
    * Not a part of this show
    * You will never see her again...
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Bertie ugly-cries Tears of Joy when Speckle says that he doesn't want to move out.
  • Ironic Echo: At the beginning of the episode Tuca taunts the bully with the line, "Life lesson: nothing belongs to anyone." The bully throws that line back at her when he steals the sugar bowl.
Tuca: Damn it, that's a fun thing to say, but tough to hear.
  • Ocular Gushers: Pastry Pete's nephew cries waterfall tears when Tuca (rightfully) calls him a Spoiled Brat to his face.
  • Shameless Fanservice Girl: Draca has a nude painting of herself hanging in her living room and casually takes her top off in Tuca and Bertie's company.
  • Spit Take: Bertie spits out a bite of the remaining muffin when Speckle reveals that his sugar bowl (which she gave to Tuca) contains his grandmother's ashes.
  • Wall Pin of Love: Pastry Pete accidentally does this to Bertie in the middle of their cooking competition.
