Recap / Total Drama: "Up the Creek"

Go To

The campers head to nearby Boney Island. Cody tries to cosy up to Gwen, Geoff gives Bridgette a rather bizarre gift and Beth takes a Tiki statue from the island after missing the warning not to take anything off the island.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Cody gets a lot more focus in this episode than the prior episodes. You would be forgiven for believing this was implying he was going to be eliminated this episode given the show's track record for sudden focus on characters, but Cody gets out of this episode with a won bet.
  • All Men Are Perverts: Cody made a bet with Owen that if the former got Gwen's bra, the latter would have to do dish duty for him. He makes the mistake of telling this to Gwen (just when she's starting to warm up to him), which gets him hit in the groin with her canoe paddle.
  • Ascended to Carnivorism: The Woolly Beavers on Boney Island, after being isolated for thousands of years, have evolved to become meat-eaters.
  • Air Guitar: Cody plays air guitar in the confessional to celebrate partnering up with Gwen for a challenge. The confessional is intercut by one of Gwen's, in which she calls Cody childish and annoying. The camera cuts back to Cody, who is still playing air guitar and inadvertently proving Gwen's claim.
  • Blatant Lies: Izzy spends most of the episode making up wild stories about her past. It does turn out she's telling the truth about being wanted by the RCMP, though.
  • Bring My Brown Pants: Owen wets himself twice while on the run from first prehistoric woolly beavers and later monstrous geese native to Boney Island.
  • Brutal Honesty: DJ outright tells Geoff that he's completely failing at trying to score a date with Bridgette.
  • Crappy Homemade Gift: Geoff tries to confess his love for Bridgette by giving her a picture frame he made out of macaroni. He also tears a group picture and glues it together so it appears that the two are hugging each other. Bridgette expresses her cringe by pretending to choke herself, though she warms up to Geoff by the end of the episode.
  • Cursed Item: Chris says that a lot of the things on Boney Island are cursed. Beth, who was in the bathroom and missed the warning, takes a tiki doll from the island, beginning the arc of the Screaming Gophers' losing streak.
  • The Darkness Gazes Back: As the campers rush into the forest of Boney Island, they are met by eyes glowing up from the flora's shadows. The eyes turn out to belong to woolly beavers, which are hostile, carnivorous, and give chase.
  • Epic Fail: When explaining why he's afraid of water, DJ says that he got his swimming shorts stuck up his rear after diving off a very high board, and he had to spend time in hospital to remove it.
  • Everything Makes a Mushroom: Part of the challenge is for the teams to put together a proper rescue fire. Izzy creates a potent firestarter from tree sap and sand and warns the others to stand back as she chucks it into the small fire they've got going. The warning is worthwhile, because, when the firestarter is ignited, it generates a double-capped mushroom whose height reaches up to Chris's helicopter. The Screaming Gophers win that challenge.
  • Facepalm: Trent slaps his hand to his face when Lindsay steps right into the quicksand to save him and starts sinking too.
  • Flashback Cut: When Beth finds an idol on Boney Island that she decides to take with her, a flashback occurs to earlier in the episode when Chris warned everyone but Beth not to take anything from Boney Island lest they want to be cursed.
  • Groin Attack: Gwen hits Cody in the nuts twice with a canoe paddle. First time for being annoying, and continually asking her out on dates, despite repeatedly saying no. The second time is for asking for her bra.
  • I Just Shot Marvin in the Face: Chris accidentally shoots and kills an eagle with a gun he uses to signal the start of the canoe challenge. He notes that it is going to provoke a lot of angry emails.
  • I Want My Beloved to Be Happy: Cody ends up helping Gwen, his crush, get with her crush, Trent, so Gwen will be happy (and so he can win a bet to get her bra).
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Beth was in the bathroom when Chris was explaining the rules of the challenge, including warning to never taking anything from Boney Island.
  • Minor Injury Overreaction: Geoff gets a splinter the size of his body hair in his leg. With the exception of the cameraman, who initially has no clue what to aim the camera at as Geoff screams in pain, everyone present treats Geoff's as if it's horrific if not life-threatening. Geoff acts and is treated like an invalid and gets pampered for the rest of the episode.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero:
    • Beth accidentally curses her team after taking the Tiki off Boney Island, starting her team's three challenge losing streak, mainly because she didn't know about Chris' warning after he explained the rules of the challenge while she was in the bathroom.
    • Izzy telling the Bass to use a human motor costs her team the game.
  • Non-Gameplay Elimination: Izzy gets chased off by law enforcement at the end of the marshmallow ceremony. Chris shrugs it off and counts it as her elimination. note
  • No One Gets Left Behind: Geoff injures his leg during a challenge on Boney Island. He tells the Killer Bass to go on without him and without another word, Courtney takes him up on it. However, DJ stops her and resolutely tells her that he won't allow anyone to be left behind. Harold and DJ join forces in carrying Geoff the rest of the trek.
  • Out-of-Character Moment: Trent threatens to beat up Cody if he was lying. Then again, he might just be touchy about people messing with Gwen after the crap Heather's put her through, and he calms down immediately when Cody points out that he has no reason to lie.
  • Quicksand Sucks: As if Boney Island isn't dangerous enough as it is, Chris sets up quicksand pits. Trent walks ahead of the other Screaming Gophers and steps into one. Lindsay tries to save him, but only ends up stuck and sinking too. Cody sees an opportunity to be a hero and swings with a vine above the pit with the intent to grab Trent's hand, but he misses and slams into a tree. The vine, however, swings back and Trent and Lindsay grab it to pull themselves out. They still give Cody full credit for their survival.
  • Rodents of Unusual Size: The woolly beavers of Boney Island are the same size as the show's grizzly bears.
  • Shipper on Deck:
    • DJ supports Geoff in his endeavors to win over Bridgette.
    • Despite his crush on Gwen, Cody encourages Trent to spend more time with Gwen since he knows Gwen likes Trent.
  • Ship Sinking: Cody agrees to leave Gwen alone for the time being as long as Trent makes her happy.
  • Ship Tease: Trent and Gwen get attention in this episode, with Gwen wanting to ride in the canoe with him and Cody helping her get time alone with Trent.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Boney Island is based on Skull Island from King Kong (1933).
    • Owen's line "If this canoe's a-rockin', don't come a-knockin'!" comes from the Stevie Ray Vaughan song, "The House Is Rockin'", which features the lyrics "If the house is a-rockin', don't bother knockin'".
    • Cody assisting Gwen in getting together with Trent in exchange for her bra is a based on a plot line from Sixteen Candles (although it was panties instead of a bra in the film).
  • Side Bet: Owen and Cody make a bet whether or not Cody can get his hands on one of Gwen's bras. If he can, Owen will do his dishes for the rest of the competition. Cody realizes that Gwen will never give him one out of romantic interest, so he makes a deal to set her up with Trent in return for a bra. Both come through on the deal, so Owen loses the bet.
  • Super-Strength: DJ manages to push all of his teams canoes, with his team on top, at high speeds, to win the challenge.
  • Toilet Paper Trail: Beth needs to go to the bathroom right when Chris gives the instructions for the day's challenge. She gets her thing done as fast as possible and comes running back with a toiler paper trail just as the instructions are over and the challenge begins.
  • The Unreveal: It's never revealed who the last marshmallow would have gone to before the RCMP shows up to capture Izzy, though being responsible for her team's loss does at least hint at her actually getting voted off.
  • Viewers Are Goldfish: Early in the episode, Beth isn't present to hear that there's a curse to be suffered by anyone who takes something from Boney Island. About twelve minutes later, she finds an idol on the beach and takes it with her. A Flashback Cut reminds the audience that firstly, you're not supposed to take anything from Boney Island, and secondly, Beth doesn't know that.
  • Whateversaurus: The mammal variant. Boney Island is home to, among other things, "woolly beavers", giant tusked rodents that Chris describes as survivors from the Pleistocene.

Woolly Beavers

The fauna on Boney Island is a remnant of an Ice Age. The massive, carnivorous beavers are just one example.
