Recap / Total Drama: "The Princess Pride"

Go To

Our contestants go through a Princess-themed movie challenge, with both genders fighting to see who gets to be either the princess or Knight In Shining Armour. At the same time, Justin starts crushing on Courtney.

Tropes:

  • Achievements in Ignorance: A lovesick Harold runs blindly across the rickety bridge, jumping off its ropes and the "troll" trying to attack him, getting easily the fastest and least painful win.
  • Batman Gambit: Courtney reveals she spent the episode making Justin fall for her so she could win and get him eliminated.
  • Big "YES!": Duncan's reaction when he realizes that Justin and Courtney won't be kissing.
  • Character Shilling: This episode is pretty heavy on the Courtney shilling. She gets to wear the beautiful princess dress and crown, have princess dolls made in her image, and sing a Disney Princess-style song (during which Lindsay exclaims "Courtney is so lucky! She gets to wear that sparkly head-thing!"). Then Justin suddenly grows a crush on her (despite never showing any previous signs of being attracted to her), fights Duncan and Harold for her affections, and even throws the challenge for her sake, yelling that he forgives her after she throws him off the tower. This may have been deliberate since it was a parody of princess movies.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Duncan cheated during the bridge challenge; he was supposed to be unable to see, but he rigged the blindfold to allow one eye to peek through. Duncan doesn't get eliminated, but Courtney loses respect in him partly because of it, and he loses the second challenge when he gets flattened by the dragon stand-in.
  • Chronic Backstabbing Disorder: After Harold helps take out Duncan during the second challenge, Justin betrays him in order to claim the prize.
  • Cool Crown: Courtney wears a tiara as part of her princess dress. She even keeps it on during the elimination.
  • Disc-One Final Boss: Justin is eliminated in this episode, proving that he's not the main antagonist after a few episodes had set him up as such.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending: After being passed over for the role of princess, horribly injured during the bridge challenge, and possibly suffering a concussion, Beth gets the line of princess merchandise in the end.
  • Enemy Mine: During the tower challenge, the remaining knights have to get past a dragon stand-in. Justin offers to team-up with Harold in order to incapacitate Duncan.
  • Graceful Ladies Like Purple: Courtney wears a purple dress when selected to be the princess for the challenge.
  • Gold Digger: During Courtney’s song about her perfect prince, she sings, “My prince will have lots of money!” and flings handfuls of dollar bills into the air.
  • Humiliation Conga: Justin is repeatedly injured in the face, is repeatedly ignored by the other girls, has his emotions toyed with by Courtney, gets pushed off a high tower, loses out to Duncan for Courtney's affections, is voted off, and no one cares (with Harold, who he betrayed, in particular mocking him for it).
  • Hypocrite: Duncan calls Justin pathetic for stealing his kiss, despite doing the exact same thing to Harold mere seconds ago. Harold calls him out on this.
  • Informed Deformity: Lindsay is revealed to have very large feet, which is never brought up before or after this episode (other episodes have shown her barefoot with average sized feet) and is mostly just a justification for Courtney to take the princess role. More specifically, both Lindsay and Courtney were seen barefooted in their pajamas only two episodes prior in "Super Hero-ld".
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Justin is right that Duncan did cheat during the bridge challenge.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After spending the first half of the season manipulating girls and getting ahead in the game, Justin meets his end when Courtney refuses to return his feelings, especially in the final challenge where they had to sword fight for immunity. Also, Justin broke his pact with Harold after betraying him to go to Courtney. That was what also sealed Justin's fate.
  • Manipulative Bitch: Courtney reveals that she tricked Justin to fall for her in order to win / eliminate him.
  • Now, Buy the Merchandise: Chris plugs the Princess Courtney merchandise: dolls and a musical CD. However, Courtney demanded the majority of profits, so Chris retooled the line for the remaining brunette: Beth. Then he learns the show's target audience doesn't really care for dolls, anyway (though Chef gets a kick out of playing soldiers with them).
  • Musical Episode: Courtney sings a musical number when she is introduced as "Princess Courtney".
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the film The Princess Bride.
  • Projectile Kiss: Courtney blows an air kiss to Harold, Justin, and (reluctantly) Duncan. Duncan steals the kiss from Harold, and Justin steals it from Duncan, who chastises Justin for stealing another guy's kiss.
  • Shout-Out:
  • Squee: Beth squeals in delight when Chris announces the princess merchandise will be based on her instead of Courtney.
  • Suspiciously Specific Denial: Courtney has an outburst when Chris tricks her into thinking Duncan's eliminated instead of Justin. Chris admits to lying, which leaves Duncan amused that Courtney came to his defense. In the confessional, Courtney insists she freaked because she worked hard to get Justin eliminated and that it had absolutely nothing to do with her feelings for Duncan, which she definitely doesn't have.
  • Voodoo Doll: Beth and Lindsay poke one of the Courtney dolls with needles; Courtney suddenly feels a pain in her backside. When the dolls get repurposed as Beth dolls, Beth rushes to remove the needles before she feels the pain.
