Recap / Titans S3E7 "51%"

Go To

Gotham's crime families meet to discuss the fear toxin's hold on the city - only to be confronted by the mastermind himself. As Dick and Barbara consult the Oracle to preempt Crane's next move, Starfire and Blackfire reach an understanding.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Attack Hello: Unsurprisingly, Gar knocking on Molly's door at three in the morning after a wave of random attacks gets a pistol brandished in his face.
  • Bait-and-Switch: After Starfire and Blackfire bring Michael and Valeska back together, it looks to be a tearful reunion between the two...only for Valeska to give Michael a Boom, Headshot!.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Titans might've failed to save Jason but they're close to stopping the Scarecrow. In addition, Gar reveals that he still wants to bring Jason back to the Titans and recruits help from Jason's old friend.
  • Cut Lex Luthor a Check: Invoked; the Five Families might be criminals, but they are still businessmen and demand to know how Crane's drug causing chaos on the streets will increase their profits. Crane says he has refined the drug and is prepared for mass distribution, which they will control.
  • The Dreaded: The crime bosses are visibly nervous when Scarecrow reveals himself as the man behind Red Hood.
Crane: Guys, relax. If I was going to gas you, you'd already be laying on the floor, peeling your skin off, starting with your eyelids.
  • Dull Surprise: When Valeska murders her son, Blackfire seems to be the only one who saw it coming.
    Blackfire: (Sarcastically) What a surprise.
  • False Reassurance: Crane assures Jason that he's not Batman, so he's not going to get angry over Jason stealing his product. Jason then takes a snort of said product and keels over, as Crane has doped it up in anticipation of Jason doing so. "Like I said, I'm not Batman."
  • Godzilla Threshold: Dick and Barbara consider using Oracle to be this.
Dick: If we don't use it, more people are gonna die. You and I both know that.
    Barbara: I promised myself I wouldn't.
Dick: You didn't get rid of it, did you? Why not?
Barbara: Because I imagined a moment in the future so terrible that we might need it.
    Dick: That moment, we're here.
  • I Warned You: Starfire thinks her sister will say "I told you so", but Blackfire actually approves of her killing Valeska despite it losing them a valuable lead. In fact, it causes her to open up about her own motives for killing their parents. The harm is minimized when one of Valeska's goons provides a lead instead.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: After Valeska goes back on Starfire's agreement by killing her son despite Starfire promising to protect him, Starfire proceeds to give Valeska a painful death in the form of incineration and reduced her to ashes.
  • Mythology Gag: Valeska Nox's first name is also the last name of a certain pair of brothers from another version of Gotham City.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Crane drugs Jason to bring him back under his control. He then hacks into Oracle and lays a trap for the Titans, blowing up a helpless victim right in front of them, to convince Barbara to destroy Oracle so it can't be used to locate him. However the identity of the deceased victim is a clue to his location, and with Red Hood immobilized he can only fume helplessly while the Titans take apart his drug factory on the eve of his success.
  • Offing the Offspring:
    • Mob boss Valeska Nox offers to give up Crane's location to Starfire and Blackfire if they reunite her with her son Michael. However, as soon as they bring Michael to her, she promptly shoots him in the head for being an FBI informant.
    • Blackfire reveals that her and Starfire's parents were planning to do this to her in order to placate an angry populace who wrongly blamed her for Starfire remaining on Earth, which was why she killed them.
  • Pre-Mortem One-Liner: After Valeska kills her son Michael, Starfire tricks her into shaking her hand, and incinerates her with her powers.
Kory: …I like to shake on my deals.
Valeska: Fair enough, Titan. (shakes her hand)
    Kory: I’m not only a Titan… I’m a Queen.
  • Reduced to Dust: Starfire burns Valeska to ashes after she kills her son.
  • Robots Think Faster: Oracle updates itself the moment it comes online.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: The moment the Titans show up, the crime bosses all walk out on Crane's operation. Unfortunately Crane too is able to escape, taking Jason with him.
  • Ship Tease: Connor is visibly awed by Blackfire's form-fitting battle armor, while she in turn is impressed by his abilities and wants to know if he has anything else in his toolkit. Meanwhile Barbara and Dick rekindle their relationship.
  • Tranquil Fury: Starfire clearly shows this before making Valeska experience an excruciating death.
  • Token Good Teammate: This episode established Gar as the only one who is trying to help Jason compared to the others.
  • We Can Rule Together: Played straight; Blackfire was able to seize power after killing her parents, but her 0% Approval Rating after this act means she can't rule effectively, so she came to Earth to ask her sister to join her as co-rulers. It's not shown what Starfire thinks of this idea, but she's at least willing to accept them pairing up as a Sibling Team to take down Crane.
