Tropes

  • Accidental Pun: Dick (Robin) takes Rachel (Raven) to Hank (Hawk) and Dawn (Dove)'s apartment, basically having the bird-themed heroes flock together. Dick lampshades it near the end of the episode.
  • Ambiguous Situation: Did Dick intend to come back for Rachel or not? His remarks to Dawn would suggest no, as would Rachel using her powers, then calling him a liar. However, the fact Rachel originally believed him when he said he wasn't going to leave her suggests that he was telling the truth and that the note he left made her doubt her powers.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Dove shows up to save a captured Hawk in the Batman Cold Open, then Robin shows up to save them both. Unfortunately no-one turns up to save them all from the Nuclear Family.
  • Celebrity Paradox: After all the Game of Thrones references here, Iain Glen joined the show as Bruce Wayne in Season 2.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Justified by Hank, as Dawn and Dick had an affair in the past.
  • Creepy Family: The Nuclear Family looks straight out of the 50s and enjoys activities ranging from Monopoly to breaking into Amy Rohrbach's apartment to torture her for Dick's location.
  • Downer Ending: The episode ends with Rachel captured by the Nuclear Family, with Dick, Hank, Dawn, and Amy all gravely injured.
  • Early-Bird Cameo: Donna Troy is seen in a photo and in Dick's contact list. She won't make an appearance until later this season.
  • Eye Scream: One gunrunner ends up with a Birdarang in his eye. Then Robin pulls it out.
  • The Family That Slays Together: The Nuclear Family. They're drug-empowered and go on a manhunt together.
  • Fan Disservice: Hank gets a Bathtub Scene, while treating his injuries.
  • Former Friends Photo: Dawn has a photograph of herself, Hank, Dick, and Donna all smiling. In the present, they're far from on good terms.
  • Groin Attack: Robin stabs a guy in the groin, and said guy has been wanting to chop-off Hank's member since the episode started.
  • Harmful to Minors: Dick voices his concern over Rachel's fondness over Game of Thrones. Rachel is also hardly bothered when she accidentally sees Dawn's memory of having sex with Dick.
  • Hold the Unsolicited Ingredient: Rachel requests no pineapple on the pizza.
  • Irony: Dick stabs a mook's, well, dick.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: The torturer who twice threatens to cut off Hank's genitals gets his clippers in the groin.
  • The Loins Sleep Tonight: Implied to be a result of all of Hank's physical injuries catching up to him.
  • Meaningful Echo: Rachel repeats what Dick told her about there sometimes not being any time to be scared when trying to convince him he should help Hank and Dawn.
  • The Missus and the Ex: Dawn and Dick were apparently involved in the past and a large part of Hank's antagonism towards the latter.
  • Mythology Gag: Dawn is seen wearing a Superman t-shirt.
  • Second Episode Introduction: Hank, Dawn, and the Nuclear Family all make their series debut.
  • Secondary Character Title: Hank and Dawn are not part of the main cast.
  • Shout-Out: Rachel is seen watching Game of Thrones. She later calls Dawn "Khaleesi".
  • Trauma Button: Dawn falling from the roof triggers Dick's memories of his parents falling from the trapeze.
  • The Voice: Alfred is heard in a phone call, but not seen.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Rachel and Hank deliver one of these to Dick together, calling him out for planning to leave Rachel there and pay Hank and Dawn to take care of her.
  • Working with the Ex: Dick asks Dawn for help regarding Rachel. He also helps her and Hank during the latter two's gun busting mission.
