Recap / 30 Rock S2 E8 "Secrets and Lies"

Go To

Liz has to deal with the insecurities of her two main stairs on TGS, Tracy and Jenna. Meanwhile, Jack and CC try to decide whether or not to go public with their relationship.

This episode contains the following tropes:

  • Actually Pretty Funny: Liz grudgingly concedes that a member of Jenna's entourage landed a solid burn on her.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick: After a number of conservative guests at Jack's executive lunch admit to secret liberal beliefs, one of them stands up and admits "I murdered my wife!"
  • Brick Joke: Tracy mentions the Japanese act of "sharking", or yanking down a woman's top to expose her breasts. During his "acceptance speech", he does just that to Jenna.
  • The Cameo: James Carville plays himself, giving advice to Jack (regarding his relationship with CC) and Frank and Toofer (regarding how to handle their feud). He also steals from a vending machine.
  • Camp Gay: When Jenna tries to act like Tracy in order to make a point, her "entourage" consists solely of incredibly flamboyant gay men.
  • Catchphrase: James Carville ends every other sentence with "...Cajun-style!"
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Jenna is absolutely right that Liz spends too much time bending over backwards to keep Tracy from acting out. The trouble is that Jenna's angry she can't act out.
  • Parlor Games: Jack, CC, Liz and Kenneth play a celebrity guessing game at Jack's party. Jack and CC have a nearly telepathic connection, but Kenneth is completely hopeless at it.
  • Snipe Hunt: Jack sends Jonathan to a non-existent bakery in order to get some alone time with CC.
  • You Wouldn't Like Me When I'm Angry!: Toofer warns the rest of the writing crew that you should never make a Harvard man angry. They're about as intimidated as you'd expect—which is to say, not at all.
