Season 10, Episode 6

Beta contends with Negan’s attempt to join the Whisperers while Daryl and Carol cross the border in search of Alpha’s horde.

  • Bad Boss: Beta kills the Whisperer who gave Negan some food to distract the horde and set them on the latter to get rid of him.
  • Brick Joke: Negan crossed the border in the previous episode ready to huff and puff at the “little pigs”. In this episode, he has to kill a wild pig.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Beta is prepared to kill Negan at the beginning of the episode, but when Negan claims he will spill every secret of Alexandria gathered during his incarceration, Beta begrudgingly spares him, knowing it could be useful.
  • The Comically Serious: Beta has no patience for Negan’s usual shenanigans, which makes him genuinely funny to watch as he fumes and treats Negan like shit.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Eugene tells the woman on the radio that he is from Dallas, TX. The earliest scene set with Eugene thus far was a flashback in Season 5’s “Self-Help” where he met Abraham in Houston.
    • Carol suggests Daryl try romance with Connie, but he acts stoic and against the idea. In Season 3’s “Seed”, Daryl similarly flatly refused Carol’s joking romantic advances.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Negan seemingly rebounds on his good turn in recent times to join the Whisperers.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • After Beta questions her judgment, Alpha asks if he is ready to become the Alpha, to which Beta replies that he will never be. This comes to fruition eight episodes later when he discovers Alpha has been killed by Negan, and though he becomes the new leader of the Whisperers, he still adamantly refuses the title.
    • Negan tells Beta he's at the camp for Alpha, not him. He's a mole sent by Carol to infiltrate the group and bring her Alpha's head.
    • Whether it was intentional or not, the blood splatter on the left side of Negan's face as he kneels in front of Alpha at the end of the episode resembles a scythe.
    • One that doubles as a Rewatch Bonus. Carol, questioning why Daryl is so hesitant to move on with his life, tells him he doesn't have to be alone and "can't hide out with her dog forever." A later episode reveals the "her" in question to be Dog's original owner, Leah, who Daryl had a relationship with during the six-year Time Skip in Season 9. Carol knew of Leah's existence, but not the full story of her disappearance.
  • Kneel Before Zod: Beta kneels before Alpha in submission when she dares him to challenge her. At the end of the episode, Negan kneels before Alpha to show he is ready to follow her.
  • Pet the Dog: When Beta denies Negan any food, a Whisperer kindly lets him have some of their dinner. Beta sees this and kills him for it later.
  • Shipper on Deck: Carol is all for Daryl and Connie getting together.
  • Ship Tease: Carol says she can see a spark between Daryl and Connie, and Daryl himself is very evasive on the subject.
  • Silent Snarker: When Negan convinces Beta to spare him, Beta decides this still doesn’t mean he has to listen to him, and uses his blindfold to instead gag him.
  • The Starscream: Invoked when Beta questions Alpha again, as the latter outright dares Beta to try to usurp her. Beta ultimately kneels obediently before her, refusing to ever challenge her.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: As Dante says, in a world after modern medicine, little things can become big problems when it comes to illnesses.
  • The Voice: The unknown woman who Eugene speaks to, since we only hear her voice over the radio.
  • Wham Shot: Negan, the former Big Bad of the series, kneeling respectfully before Alpha to offer his services.
