Recap / The Real Ghostbusters S 1 E 1 Ghosts R Us

Go To

The Ghostbusters, with Slimer accompanying them, are working at a haunted factory. The ghost makes chocolates burst out of the chimney, which Slimer eats. They enter the factory to find three ghosts making a mess with chocolate. They chase them onto a conveyor belt and trap them. On live TV, the factory owner thanks the Ghostbusters and awards them a year's supply of chocolate.

The Ghostbusters arrive home and give the chocolate to Janine as a gift, but all of the boxes are empty except one, in which Slimer is napping. Ray scolds Slimer for being "naughty", while Peter threatens to blast him. Then, Ray empties the trap into the containment unit, and the Ghostbusters and Slimer go off to bed.

Slimer wakes up after a feather from his pillow makes him sneeze and raids the fridge. Winston wakes up and follows him into the basement, but doesn't see Slimer, however, Slimer then slides down the wall and accidentally pushes the lever for the containment unit. He tries to flip the lever back, but he's not strong enough, and the three ghosts from the factory escape and decide to put the Ghostbusters out of business.

One of them starts scaring a hospital patient, while the other two enter disguised as humans and take him away. The Ghostbusters arrive at the hospital to find the human-disguised ghosts, in a van and claiming to be a service called "Ghosts R Us".

The next day, Janine gets hung up on after telling the woman on the other end of the phone that the organisation is not Ghosts R Us. They have been getting many calls, irritating the Ghostbusters, but then they get summoned to a hotel. However, the "Ghosts R Us" ghosts beat them to it and both teams drive off.

Janine then contacts the Ghostbusters letting them know that three ghosts have escaped, causing them to realise that the "Ghosts R Us" staff are the three ghosts they caught earlier, and that Slimer must have been the one who let them out. They get called to a toy factory, so they head there, followed by the three ghosts, who awaken a sleeping ghost. However, it turns on them and possesses a bunch of toys.

The Ghostbusters arrive to find the evil ghost, who is very powerful, and chase it down the street, with Ray and Egon in a helicopter called Ecto-2. Ray and Egon trap the three troublemaking ghosts and then they all go after the powerful one. Slimer, feeling like he needs to make up for accidentally freeing the other ghosts, charges towards the ghost, while Egon fires up a weapon to attack it with. The ghost slips on some ectoplasm and falls in the ocean, separating itself from the toys, then the machine goes off, blowing up the ghost. Peter begrudgingly thanks Slimer for helping save the day.

This episode provides examples of

  • And Your Reward Is Edible: The chocolate factory owner awards the Ghostbusters a year's supply of chocolates for getting rid of the ghosts in the factory.
  • Anti-Sneeze Finger: When feathers go up Slimer's nose, he tries to stop himself from sneezing by holding his finger to his nose, but it doesn't work.
  • Ate It All: The chocolates were meant to feed four people for a year, but Slimer eats them all at once.
  • Balloon Belly: Slimer (perhaps because he is a ghost) instantly becomes fat after eating many chocolates.
  • Big, Thin, Short Trio: The trio of ghosts in this episode consist of Zonk (Big), Snarg (Thin), and Slug (Short).
  • Conforming OOC Moment: Downplayed when all of the Ghostbusters smile upon receiving the chocolate, including Egon. Egon is usually The Stoic, but then again, he does have a Genius Sweet Tooth.

  • Ectoplasm:
    • Slimer gets ectoplasm on Peter's face twice.
    • He then gets ectoplasm on the lampshade.
    • He makes a trail of goop when he slides down the wall, and again when he slides down a railing.
  • Edible Ammunition: The chocolate factory ghosts throw melted chocolate, cream, and a cherry.
  • Evil Laugh: The ghost who threw chocolate at Ray laughs at him evilly.
  • Expy: Slug, Snarg, and Zonk are this to the Looney Tunes version of The Three Bears, as they consist of a short, short-tempered father, a thin, kindly mother, and an overgrown doofus baby.
  • Fat Comic Relief: Zonk is very large, which results in him comically getting stuck or weighing things down. One of the other ghosts also wants him to diet because of his size.
  • Food Coma: Slimer falls asleep after eating the boxes of chocolate.
  • Giant Food: Slimer dreams of giant food bouncing over a fence.
  • Goo Goo Getup: Zonk, one of the ghosts in the chocolate factory wears a big diaper.

  • Platonic Kissing: Slimer kisses Peter upon being thanked by him.
  • Pun: When Egon says that the chocolate factory is "clean" (i.e. there are no more ghosts there), Winston, noting that the floor is covered in chocolate, says, "Well, yes and no".
  • Revolting Rescue: Slimer helps in the powerful ghost's defeat by leaving ectoplasm which the ghost slips on.
  • Say My Name: The Ghostbusters angrily shout, "Slimer!" when he eats all the chocolate and naps in one of the boxes.
  • Silly Spook: The ghosts at the beginning make messes with chocolate and one of them wears a diaper.
  • Skewed Priorities: When Slimer accidentally unlocks the containment unit, he's worried, but not about the containment breach — he's instead afraid of what Peter would do.
  • Speak in Unison:
    • When Janine says, "Hi, guys!", Peter and Winston say, "Hi, Janine!" at the same time.
    • The guys shout Slimer's name in unison when he eats the chocolate.
  • Spoofs "R" Us: The episode title parodies Toys R Us.
  • Tempting Fate: When the Ghostbusters arrive at the toy factory, Peter says, "For a change, we're actually the first ones here", only for the three ghosts to appear. He then says, "Make that the second ones here", only for the fourth ghost to appear.
  • Title Drop: Janine says over the phone, "No, ma'am, this is the real Ghostbusters, not Ghosts R Us".
