Tropes

  • All Crimes Are Equal: Frank is ready to shoot the child porn photographer, but Amy insists that while he's a creep he doesn't deserve death. She does cheerfully suggest Frank burn down his studio if that still rankles, however.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Amy looks pleased after learning how to successfully take someone's gun away. Then Frank asks, "So you just took a gun away from someone who wanted to use it on you. What do you do next?"
  • Berserk Button:
    • Frank is once again confronted with a child porn peddler and the only reason he doesn't kill him is because Amy asked him not to. Instead, he just opts to burn down his back alley photo studio.
    • Billy pistol-whips the man who calls him a freak.
  • Call-Back: When Amy asks to be taught how to shoot, Frank points out the last time he gave her a gun she didn't do anything with it.
  • Chekhov's Skill
    • Amy mentions her team disguised themselves as the catering crew when first getting the photo, explaining her talent for disguise here.
    • Frank teaches Amy how to disarm an opponent without getting shot in the process.
  • Disarm, Disassemble, Destroy: When the porn photographer tries to pull a Sawn-Off Shotgun on Frank, he grabs the shotgun while simultaneously opening the action so it can't fire. Though he decides to keep the shotgun for his own use rather than destroy it.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: The reason why Frank spares Nikolai Poloznev is his teenage daughter. Too bad Pilgrim wasn't so nice...
  • Evil Costume Switch: Billy steals a gun and his hospital mask from Krista's drawer, and uses them for committing crimes.
  • Face Death with Dignity: Nikolai Poloznev remains calm and collected after he realizes Frank means to kill him. Likewise after being found by Pilgrim.
  • Incredibly Obvious Tail: Justified as Pilgrim is just trying to make contact with Madani. However she goes back to the cafe where he was waiting and gets the waiters to give her anything Pilgrim might have touched, so she can run a fingerprint test.
  • Indirect Kiss: Russo and Krista do the "drinking from the same cup" version.
  • Joe Sent Me: The episode opens with Frank and Amy waiting outside the reinforced door of a porn photographer, whose equipment they intend to 'borrow' to develop the photographs. The photographer slides open the viewing slot, takes one look at Frank's mean and bruised face, says "Hell no!" and slams it shut. Frank hammers on the door a second time and says, "Uncle Teddy sent us." That works (along with the fact that Amy is dressed up like a Bubblegum Popping Judy Garland).
  • Lost in a Crowd: Amy, dressed as a waitress, is being followed by a couple of goons. As she walks she pulls a schoolgirl tie out of her white shirt, then turns the corner and lets down her hair and reverses her black skirt to reveal a plaid skirt. She then turns and walks past the goons with a bunch of other schoolgirls who are going home at that time.
  • Master of Disguise: Amy, who can switch from a waitress to school girl look in a matter of seconds, while being followed. Earlier she dresses in a Judy Garland outfit to get them into the child pornographer's studio.
  • My Greatest Failure: At the end of the episode, Frank considers not killing Billy this and plans to correct that mistake.
  • Never Going Back to Prison: Billy makes this clear to both Krista and Curtis. The latter calls in Frank rather than risk police officers being killed.
  • Not My Driver: Frank knocks out Poloznev's driver and waits in his limo for him, after using Amy to lure away his bodyguards.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Krista suggests to Mahoney that their need for control is one trait that criminals and police share. Russo, overhearing the conversation, is not impressed, suggesting that Krista also has her issues in that area and her helping him is just to satisfy her own need for control after having lost someone in the past.
  • Oh, Crap!: Curtis sees Russo's mask reflected in his car's window...
  • "Open!" Says Me: Suggested by Frank at the pornographer's studio, only for Amy to point out the thick steel door that even Frank can't knock down.
  • Pants-Positive Safety: Curtis has a gun tucked into his pants, under his apron, while serving meals to veterans. Later in the episode, he shoves the same gun into the front of his jeans while seated.
  • Pet the Dog: Billy confronts Curtis, but lets him live, as (due to his damaged memory) he still sees him as his comrade-in-arms and is sorry for shooting him.
  • Replacement Goldfish:
    • It's implied that Amy is this for Frank's daughter, who would be around her age if she had lived, and she's looking at him like a father/big brother.
    • Russo reads Krista's notes and realises he's this for someone she calls KM.
  • The Reveal: The picture that was taken by Amy and her crew showed the son of the Schultz family kissing a man. The Russians wanted to use that as blackmailing material to control him, as the man wants to run for president.
  • Ripped from the Headlines/Does This Remind You of Anything?: The Russians want to own a man running for president, but Frank wants nothing to do with this, saying, "Call me old fashioned. I don't work with the Russians."
  • Slap-Slap-Kiss: A particularly gruesome example between Krista Dumont and Billy Russo. After verbally arguing, Krista slaps him, then Billy starts choking her, then she stabs his hand, which causes Billy to kiss her.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Russo again, this time not only to Jake, but also 2 of his buddies. At the end of the episode, they are about to start their own crime gang. It's likely this more than anything that causes Curtis to bring in Madani and Frank to end him once and for all, as some of them are people from Curtis' therapy group who are only going to get into trouble.
