Recap / The Office USS 6 E 25 The Chump

Go To

Michael reveals that he is still seeing Donna after learning that she’s married in the previous episode. Although he tries to rationalize it and play himself up as the good guy in his situation, the staff openly disapprove of his actions, particularly Andy due to his previous experience.

Meanwhile, Jim and Pam have trouble staying awake at work due to their new baby, and Angela tries to make Dwight honor their pregnancy contract.

Tropes

  • Call-Back: Having had a cheating fiancé before, Andy is naturally the most vocally opposed to Michael seeing Donna.
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • In a talking head, Pam says she’s tired from being up all night with Cece. Erin says she shouldn’t keep a baby up all night.
    • Michael is approached by a group of reporters as he's leaving for the day and for some reason assumes that they're asking him to make a statement on his recently-cut affair.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Though Michael has done some abhorrent things in the past that the rest of the office was eventually able to brush off, willingly being in an affair with a married woman even after meeting her husband is clearly a level above everything else. Most of the office shuns him, even Meredith.
Meredith: That is something I would never do.
Michael: Well, we all know what you're capable of, Meredith.
Meredith: I have never cheated on, been cheated on, or been used to cheat with.
  • Groin Attack: Dwight repeatedly does this to himself, desperate not to get Angela pregnant.
  • Hypocrite Has a Point: Michael snaps back and asks why wasn't Stanley questioned when he was having an affair during the season premier. That time the office defended Stanley instead of making him confront his wife, which the office this time do to Michael. No one has any answer to that, and they still blame Michael.
  • Hypocritical Humor: When Pam accuses Michael of still seeing Donna, he turns around and asks "Since when is this an office where we delve into each other's personal lives?"
  • "Just Joking" Justification: Ryan, "inspired" by how Michael "just takes what he wants", goes to Erin's desk and propositions her for sex. She asks if he's joking, and the situation is so awkward Ryan is grateful for the out.
  • My God, What Have I Done??: Michael when confronted with Donna's affair.
  • Oh, Crap!: Dwight when Angela reads the settlement.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Subverted. It's the fact that Michael is acting too much like his usual, cheery self that clues everyone in that he hasn't broken up with Donna.
  • Pet the Dog: Michael breaks up with Donna after seeing how nice her husband is.
  • Sympathetic Adulterer: Subverted. Michael clearly thinks Donna is cheating with him because her husband is neglectful and/or abusive, but his firsthand experience with her husband convinces him otherwise.
  • A Threesome Is Hot: Implied when Ryan tries to have sex with Erin even though he's already in a relationship.
    Erin: What about Kelly?
Ryan: (smirking) You just read my mind.
