Film: Pokémon: The First Movie (1999)

This review contains examples of:

  • Anvilicious: Invoked: After a lengthy series of monologues from the characters in the movie about how fighting is wrong, The Critic explodes:
Critic: SHUT UP! God DAMN it, shut up! We get it: Violence is bad! Don't fight! We will not fight! How many times do you have to hammer this shit in?! I mean, talking about it doesn't make us less violent, it makes us more violent!
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment:
Critic: Brock has the personality of mud, Misty has the personality of motor oil, and even Ash has the distinct personality of sandpaper. Now I know what you're thinking, isn't that a little extreme? I mean, even sandpaper can be interesting sometimes.
  • Broken Aesop: The Critic wastes no time calling out the movie's "fighting is wrong" aesop, especially since the entire Pokémon franchise revolves around using Pokémon to fight other Pokémon.
Critic: I mean, am I the only one who finds it a little ironic that a franchise whose made its entire profit on nothing but fighting is suddenly telling us it's bad to be fighting? How fucking hypocritical is that? That's like O. J. Simpson going around telling everybody it's bad to kill people!
  • Captain Obvious: Critic makes a jab when this occurs in the movie.
    Corey: Mew and Mewtwo.
Neesha: So, Mewtwo was cloned from Mew.
Critic: What is this, a Dr. Seuss book?
  • Circular Reasoning:
Critic: Bottom line? This movie is stupid. It's stupid because it's boring, it's boring because it's confusing, and it's confusing because it's stupid.
  • Not Helping Your Case: At the end of the review, the Critic keeps undermining his own point with what he considered bad examples:
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Critic uses the line "You know, for kids!" for the first time when watching the scene of Mewtwo escaping confinement and burning the laboratory down with all the scientists inside.invoked
