Recap / The New Adventures of Invader Zim, S1E13 "It Came From The Sky"

Go To

Tenn crash-lands on Earth and is captured by conspiracy theorists, leaving Zim and Tak to reluctantly team up to save her. Meanwhile, Dib and his friends scramble to get to her first before her technology falls into the wrong hands.

  • Accidentally Broke the MacGuffin: The fight over the Meekrob crystal ends with Norlock accidentally blasting it into pieces.
  • Aliens Speaking English: Lampshaded by the surprise of the CREAM agents holding Tenn, when they try to figure out how to communicate with her, only to find out she already understands them.
  • Bunny-Ears Lawyer: Bill is insane and incompetent, but somehow leads his own organization.
  • Call-Back: Dib references his past interactions with Bill to explain to the twins why he can't be trusted with alien technology.
  • Conspiracy Theorist: Bill returns, now leading a whole group of like-minded individuals, who believe in all sorts of absurd things.
  • Continuity Nod: MIMI clearly recognizes and is still fearful of Phil after their encounter in Episode 4.
  • Cutting the Knot: A literal example — when Bill tries to distract Norlock with a tied and knotted rope (as per some vampire lore), the latter simply cuts it with scissors. Then he claims he taught that trick to Alexander the Great, the Trope Namer.
  • Enemy Mine: Zim and Skoodge team up with Tak to rescue Tenn from CREAM. Lampshaded by Tak quoting the Trope Namer, when Norlock points out that they don't have to like each other to get it done.
  • Everyone Has Standards: Dib may believe in just about anything, but even he thinks that Bill's outlandish theories are insane.
  • Fun with Acronyms: Bill's group, the Conspiracy Reaction Engagement Analysis Monitors (CREAM). Steve is quick to lampshade it, and one of the group's agents admits they didn't look at how it was written until after they had copyrighted the name.
  • Hypocrite: As Dib points out, Bill's attempts to expose government conspiracies just leads to him carrying out his own.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Bill's conspiracy theories make absolutely no sense whatsoever.
  • Mythology Gag: There's an unnamed cameo by Agent Batflaps, Dib's online nemesis from several issues of the comic series, as one of the CREAM members.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Tak's desire to one up Zim leads to her breaking their truce, which ultimately results in the Meekrob crystal everyone's fighting over being broken, delaying either her or Zim from finding Project Domination.
  • A Rare Sentence: Norlock, after he accidentally shatters the Meekrob crystal:
"Don't blame me! This wouldn't have happened if your moose hadn't electrocuted me! (beat) Wow, that's a sentence even I've never had a reason to say before."
  • Shout-Out:
    • Bill paraphrases Hoss Delgado's claim that he's fought eight foot tall zombie elves, and the justification on their height by saying that "it was a leap year".
    • To Vampire in Brooklyn, when Bill tries to stake Norlock and gets the wrong target:
Norlock: That's my stomach. This is my heart. You should know the rules.
    • Bill later throws a piece of cheese at Norlock, thinking that the color yellow will weaken him. Norlock specifically tells him that he's thinking of the Green Lantern.
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Bill is fighting for a greater good. At least, according to his delusions.
  • Wham Episode: Tenn arrives on Earth and allies with Tak after the data crystal shatters, leaving all three teams with a piece of it.
  • Why Did It Have to Be Snakes?: This is the chapter that introduces Tenn's PTSD-induced phobia of malfunctioning robots.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Bill has a special vampire room to protect him from vampires. By his standards, it's actually a pretty smart move... but unfortunately, all of the vampiric legends that he relied on (running water, obsessive counting, etc.) turn out to be wrong.
