Go To

As Fran and Maxwell are preparing their wedding, they learn of Maxwell's father unexpected death, and that he left everything he owned to his fourth and illegitimate child: a young woman called Concepción.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Armor-Piercing Response: After Fran tells C.C. she is marrying Maxwell even if he lose his inheritance and all his money, as she is marrying for love, C.C. says the following statement who visibly worry Fran:
C.C.: Oh, that's sweet. We will see if you feel the same way when Maxwell has to move in with you and your mother... Think about it, Nanny Fine.
  • Bait-and-Switch:
    • When Sylvia meets Concepción's mother Consuelo, it sounds like she's about to ask (and rather rudely) about the money Concepción inherited... nope, she's more concerned about the room service menu.
    • Upon learning that Niles actively gaslighted her during her stay at the asylum, C.C. is surprised... and rather than being furious, she is happy that he did visit her after all and even call him a softie.
  • Big Eater: As Sylvia and Consuelo go over the room service menu, Sylvia thinks they've found something for both of them only for Consuelo to clarify it says "Served from eight to eleven."
  • Comically Missing the Point: When C.C. pities Maxwell for having all his inheritance money being given to a trollop, Fran first believes she is talking about her.
  • Expy: Consuelo, Concepción's mother, is clearly a Spanish version of Sylvia. The two hit off right away when Fran and her mother goes to visit Concepción.
  • Fantasy Sequence: Fran has a brief one where she imagines having to live with Maxwell at her mother's, with Maxwell being a drunken and lazy bum and her working a newspaper delivery woman despite being in her late pregnancy.
  • I Just Want to Be Loved: Concepción reveals that, since she never knew her father, she's always wondered about her place in the world and felt lost without having a family to care about her. As such, when Fran treats her like a sister and welcomes her into the Sheffield family with open arms, she's thrilled and decides to split her newfound riches with everyone.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: C.C. admits that if Maxwell was really worried about his inheritance, he would have left immediately for London to contest the will. Cue Maxwell announcing he is leaving for London with the Concorde, to C.C.'s glee and Fran's horror.
  • In the Blood: While trying to break the ice, Fran asks Concepción if she's got any family or a husband, only to learn that she lived with a man for years but was unable to commit. Fran immediately turns to Maxwell and exclaims, much to his annoyance:
Fran: Well there's your DNA test!
  • Killed Offscreen: Maxwell's father. Exactly how isn't said, just that he passed away "last night".
  • Long-Lost Relative: Concepción, Maxwell's half-sister that none of them knew existed until after their father died.
  • Meal Ticket: C.C. has no problems being this if it means being wed to Maxwell, immediately proposing to him after he announced that the will is incontestable. She even admits she has no shame.
  • Overly Long Name: Concepción's full name is Maria de la Concepción Bustilla Garcia del Amo Sheffield.
  • Passed-Over Inheritance: James Sheffield leaves nothing to his second wife and three legitimate children, while Maxwell's three kids get only trinkets. Everything else goes to his illegitimate daughter. Subverted in a roundabout manner when Concepción decides to share her inheritance with her half-siblings because Fran gave her what she wanted more than anything by welcoming her into the family and inviting her to Fran and Maxwell's wedding.
  • Sweet and Sour Grapes: At Sylvia's urging, Fran goes to talk to Concepción about giving up her claim to the Sheffield inheritance. But when she meets her, Fran realizes that Concepción is a kindhearted woman who's felt lost all her life and is thrilled to receive the money because it means her father really did love her, and can't bring herself to be a jerk. She instead invites Concepción to her and Maxwell's wedding as an honored guest—and later, Maxwell receives word that Concepción has decided to split the fortune with her half-siblings after all. Why? Because Fran welcomed her into the family, which is what Concepción wanted all along.
  • The Tape Knew You Would Say That: As Fran points out, Maxwell communicates more effectively with his father's Video Will than he did with the man himself.
Fran: It's a shame you two couldn't communicate like this when he was alive.
  • Unexpected Inheritance: For Concepción, the illegitimate child of Maxwell's father, as she receive his inheritance to the detriment of Maxwell and his siblings.
  • What You Are in the Dark: Though Fran has a huge list of reasons to try to get Concepción to give up her inheritance claim—including the fear that Maxwell will want to marry someone wealthy to maintain his standing—she ultimately can't go through with it after she meets the young woman and discovers what a sweet person she is. Fran instead invites her new half-sister-in-law to her wedding and treats her like "one of the family," which so delights Concepción that she decides to share the fortune she's received.
