Recap / The Mighty Ducks Game Changers S 1 E 3 Breakaway

Go To

Alex tries to be a real coach, Evan recruits Sofi, and the team gets unexpected help...from Bombay.

Tropes:

  • The B Grade: Sofi gets a B on her math quiz and is furious at Evan for convincing her to grab pizza instead of going home to study.
  • Blatant Lies: Nick is at the Ice Palace after closing, deep in conversation with a heartbroken Winnie. Gordon walks in and asks Nick why he's there; Nick says he forgot his water bottle, but started talking to Winnie before he got a chance to look for it.
Gordon: You mean... (nods and points offscreen next to Nick) *that* water bottle?
[Cut to a water bottle with "NICK" written on it]
Nick: (To the bottle) Where have you been hiding?!
  • Drench Celebration: Logan attempts one after the Don't Bothers celebrate scoring their first goal. His first attempt is stopped by Alex, though she is honored that the team is treating her like a real coach.
  • The Good Guys Always Win: Invoked verbatim by Evan in his last pitch to Sofi to switch teams. When Coach T gets mad that the Ducks didn't shut out the Don't Bothers, it works.
  • History Repeats: The Don't Bothers surrender 17 goals to their archrivals, as did the original Ducks in their first game against the Hawks.
  • Immediate Self-Contradiction: Alex abruptly changes her tune after the Ducks game when Sofi wants to join the team.
Alex: Maybe what we learned today is that we don't need anybody else; we've got the strength already within ourselves.
    [Sofi skates over]
    Sofi: I can't be a Duck anymore. I'm in!
Alex: [Sigh of relief] Thank God. We need all the help we can get, right?
  • Jerk Jock: Trevor of the Ducks, who unceremoniously drops Evan's book on the floor after barging in on Sofi and Evan's studying. In doing so, he inadvertently helps Evan make his point to Sofi that the Ducks are this.
  • Lampshade Hanging: By Mary Joe during the game against the Ducks.
Mary Joe: The Don't Bothers are really living up to their new moniker, as in "don't bother".
  • Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Logan's contribution to Evan's plan to butter up Sofi to convince her join the Don't Bothers is his hair care tips.
  • ...Or So I Heard: When asked, Nick knows exactly how long Winnie has been going out with Cocoa Chad. Not that he's been keeping track.
  • Post-Game Retaliation: Two of the Ducks take a cheap shot at Evan after he scores the Don't Bothers' first goal. Though the game is over, the referee is not amused and asks Evan to remind him to penalize the players the next time they play.
  • Precocious Crush: Nick has one on Winnie, who runs the snack bar at the Ice Palace.
  • The Quiet One: Koob uncomfortably utters a single word to Sofi as part of Evan's plan to recruit her.
    Koob: Yes.
    Sofi: What was that?
Evan: That was Koob being charming.
  • Still Got It: Gordon proves he still has a knack for creating trick plays where he creates one for Alex that incorporates Logan and Sam's poor skating skills to give Evan a breakaway and score.
