Recap / The Mighty Ducks Game Changers S 1 E 4 Hockey Moms

Go To

Bombay helps the Don’t Bother moms take on the Duck moms on the ice; Sofi’s fate hangs in the balance.

Tropes:

  • A Day in the Limelight: Koob attends Evan and Nick's sleepover and he learns how to come out of his shell and have fun without screen devices.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: Sofi's parents are understandably mad after she tries to join the Don't Bothers, and Evan throws in a bonus at the end:
Brian: I can't believe you lied to us like this.
Amara: You forged my signature, and you weren't even doing Model U.N., who's gonna represent Belgium?
  • Awkward First Sleepover: Koob spends most of his first sleepover ever glued to his phone, communicating to Nick by text even though they are in the same room. When his phone is taken away at 10 PM, he looks like he's in withdrawal.
  • The Bet: Sofi wagers her future with the Don't Bothers on the outcome of the moms' skills challenge.
  • Forged Message: Sofi forges her mom's signature on the permission slip to join the Don't Bothers.
  • Hidden Depths: Koob knows his show tunes, a skill he uses to distract Nick's moms while Nick and Evan search for his phone.
  • Living a Double Life: Sofi finds herself practicing with both the Ducks and the Don't Bothers.
  • The One Guy: Logan's dad, who attends the meeting of the Don't Bothers moms to be reminded there are still wonderful women in the world.
  • Pet the Dog: Sofi's father initially disapproves of her quitting the Ducks to join the Don't Bothers, but signs off on her transfer after seeing just how happy being with the Don't Bothers makes her.
  • Real Life Writes the Plot: Luke Islam, who plays Koob, became famous for his singing on America's Got Talent, where he received a Golden Buzzer and made it to the semi-finals, enabling Koob's Hidden Depths, described above. (This trope is used again in the season one finale, in which Koob sings the national anthem at the Ducks/Don't Bothers pickup game.)
  • Ring Out: Alex manages to defeat her boss, Stephanie, in the Slap Shot Challenge, but her victory is short-lived when Stephanie's husband scrutinizes the replay and claims Alex's foot crossed the line, disqualifying her.
  • So Much for Stealth: Nick accidentally knocks something off the table as he and Evan try to retrieve Koob's phone. Fortunately, Nick's moms are too enthralled by Koob's singing to notice.
