Recap / The Loud House S 3 E 14 Scales Of Justice Crimes Of Fashion

Go To

Scales of Justice: Lana springs into action when she learns her favorite fish are in jeopardy of losing their home to construction.

Crimes of Fashion: When Leni gets fired from her job due to missing scarves, Lincoln and Clyde take on the case as Ace Savvy and One-Eyed Jack.

"Scales of Justice"

  • A Day in the Limelight: For Lana.
  • "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot: It turns out, Lana did not need to get any signatures or do a "Scooby-Doo" Hoax at all because her fish friends are endangered species and therefore are protected by federal law. In Lana's defense, she did not know such a thing until Lisa found out what kind of fish her friends are.
  • Covered in Mud: Lana and Hops when a bulldozer dumps a load of mud on them. Lana remains this way even when she goes home, leaving a trail of mud behind, much to her parents' dismay. And it causes Leni to mistake her for a monster, thus giving Lana the idea to try a "Scooby-Doo" Hoax to save the pond. At the end of the episode, she ends up covered with mud again.
  • Didn't Think This Through: It didn't occur to Lana that her lake monster hoax would attract a large number of people hoping to see the monster for themselves.
  • Endangered Species: Lisa eventually discovers the sturgeon Lana's defending are this, which means they and the pond they live in are automatically protected by law.
  • Evil Cannot Comprehend Good: Or Jerkasses can’t, at least. The bulldozer operator seems fundamentally incapable of understanding why anybody would care about a couple of fish and their babies.
  • Expy: A robot in Lisa’s lab looks just like Astro Boy, except he has a octopus tentacle for an arm.
  • Given Name Reveal: It's revealed that the female news reporter's name is Katherine Mulligan.
  • Green Aesop: Lana stops at nothing to save her favorite sturgeons' home from construction, and eventually succeeds when she finds out that they are an endangered species protected by law.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Lana dressing up as a mud monster to scare away the construction workers results in the Tall Timbers Park gaining tourism. Lana does the mud monster bit again at another pond so the public will pay attention to that one instead, however, the new pond is where the construction moved to and with the mud monster no longer inhabiting Tall Timbers Park, the construction is moved back there.
  • Impossible Task: The only legal way to halt the construction is to start a petition and gather signatures of at least half the population of Royal Woods, which is 10,000 signatures. Lana knows how hopeless this is in the short time she has, hence why she resorts to a "Scooby-Doo" Hoax. She eventually tries it when her monster plan backfires, but fails.
  • Left the Background Music On: The Peanuts-style trumpet that plays whenever someone rambles to Lana is revealed to be Luna actually playing a trumpet.
  • Running Gag:
    • One of the Louds wondering if ten thousand is even a real number.
    • Leni running into objects three times in a row when she is freaked out by Lana.
    • Various people suggesting that the Fishmans call a lawyer before Lana tells them that they're fish. It eventually cultivates in her threatening to punch Lisa if she says it too.
    • News Reporter Katherine Mulligan talking as if she was reporting news on TV even when she's not on air, which includes her always repeating her full name.
  • Scarecrow Solution: Lana gets the animals to pose as a lake monster in order to scare the construction crew away from the Fishmans' pond.
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: Inspired by how Leni was frightened when she saw her covered in mud, Lana rallies the animals to pose as a swamp monster and scare the bulldozer driver off. It works, but then backfires because it attracts a lot of people who hope to see the monster.
  • Shout-Out: Whenever someone rambles about something towards Lana, their talking transforms into a playing trumpet, similar to how the adults talk in Peanuts. It is later revealed to be Luna playing a trumpet.
  • Shown Their Work: Lisa identifies the lake sturgeons by their actual scientific name (Acipenser fulvescens).
  • Slasher Smile: Lana utters one after getting an idea on saving the pond. Even Lola would be proud.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • When news of the "swamp monster" gets out, it naturally attracts loads of people who hope to catch a glimpse of it.
    • As Lynn Sr. and Rita point out, environmental activism ain't easy, and even if you manage to gather enough support the hard, legal way, things aren't guaranteed to work out.
  • Vehicular Sabotage: Hops sabotages the bulldozer by removing some of the screws, causing the front section of the machine to fall apart.
  • Waxing Lyrical: Lana describing her predicament leads to some oddly familiar dialogue…
Lana: Now some jerks wanna pave paradise and-
Luna: Put up a parking lot?

"Crimes of Fashion"

  • Break the Cutie: Leni, big time, after losing her job.
  • Cape Snag: When looking for clues in the store, Lincoln’s cape is snagged by a young boy who is impressed by his costume.
  • Chekhov's Gunman: Turns out the kid who's been wanting to play superhero with Lincoln and Clyde since the beginning of this episode is the one responsible for the missing scarves, and the son of Ms. Carmichael.
  • Clear My Name: What Lincoln and Clyde try to do for Leni.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Leni is working at Reiningers, a job she got in "Shop Girl".
    • Lincoln recalls seeing Scoots in the mall jail, which happened in “For Bros About to Rock”.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Ms. Carmichael threatens to have Lincoln and Clyde banned from the entire mall until they're 18 if they're wrong again about who took the scarves. Fortunately, they are right this time.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Lincoln and Clyde see Leni fold Lincoln's cape into a scarf, they finally realize where to look for the culprit.
  • Here We Go Again!: The episode ends with Lincoln and Clyde vowing to solve another mystery.
  • Innocently Insensitive: Ms. Carmichael's young son doesn't seem to think there's anything wrong with him just taking scarves from the department store to make superhero capes.
  • Inelegant Blubbering: Leni does this after being fired.
  • Mystery Episode: When Leni is accused of scarf theft and fired from her job, Lincoln and Clyde take the case as Ace Savvy and One-Eyed Jack to clear her name.
  • Not So Above It All: Ms. Carmichael forbids her employees from shopping at other clothing stores, but gladly makes an exception when she sees the dress Fiona bought and hints she's getting one for herself.
  • Pop the Tires: Lincoln and Clyde end up doing this to Scoots' scooter with clothes hangers when they suspect her to be the thief. It causes her scooter to spin out of control and knock over a rack of perfume.
  • Red Herring: To be expected for a mystery story; Clyde and Lincoln are put on the wrong track several times.
  • Running Gag: Lincoln and Clyde knocking stuff over, forcing them to apologize and offer to clean up the mess.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Reading comic books and dressing up like your favorite hero doesn't suddenly make you an expert at crime solving.
