Recap / The Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy S 6 E 2 Keeper Of The Reaper

Go To

Fred Fredburger wakes up with a hearty "YES!" He then goes about his business, and answers the door to find that he's been summoned for jury duty, to his excitement. He makes his way to the Underworld Court, quickly getting on the nerves of a blue vampire thanks to his love of spelling his name. Fred's been summoned to serve in a custody battle - between none other than Billy and Mandy, over Grim, with Judge Roy Spleen presiding.

Billy then explains the situation to the jury: Billy's father has been offered a job in another town, and Gladys quickly jumps on the boat to leave Endsville as well. Things get hairy when Billy tries to take Grim with him, and Mandy refuses, presumably because she needs Grim to do her chores. On Grim's suggestion, they've taken it to court - though not without Fred continuously interrupting the proceedings regarding cookies and other inane nonsense.

Fred gets back at it, and asks for the Judge's hammer-thingy… err, gavel. He resorts to simply stealing it and begins hammering the wall before eventually returning it to the Judge. Irwin is called to the stand, but is of little help to either party as both Billy and Mandy bully him. Fred picks that moment to announce that he needs to pee, and Judge calls a recess for Fred's pee break. Cue commercials.

When we get back, Irwin has been tossed into the same cage as Grim. Mandy offers a settlement deal to Billy - give her Grim and Billy gets a bundle of shrunken monkey heads. Billy refuses, and Mandy calls up her first witness: Jeff the Spider. Billy's horrible parenthood is made evident very quickly, not just by Jeff's testimony, but Billy begins attacking Jeff in front of everyone. Lil' Porkchop, similarly traumatized by Billy's care, is also called. Wiggy-Jiggy-Jed's hat is also shown as evidence of Billy's negligence. Fred begs for the hat, and is eventually shut up when he's given the hat.

Billy then calls a horde of witnesses to testify against Mandy - including Mindy, her own parents, Eris, Scooby-Doo, and a baby. Tensions boil over and Mandy and Billy get into a ferocious fight. As the Judge breaks it up, Fred asks for nachos, and the courtroom soon erupts… into a musical number over who should get Grim.

… Which Fred ends when he announces he needs to poop. An exasperated Judge grants his request, and tries to wrap it up before Fred gets back. The jury soon votes in favor of Mandy getting Grim, only for one of the jurors to eat one of the others voting for Mandy, resulting in a tie. Which can only be resolved by Fred. Fred only answers the question of custody with a simple "yes", which the Judge interprets as a heartfelt statement that the main trio shouldn't be separated due to their close friendship. Moved, the Judge puts Billy's family under house arrest, preventing them from ever moving.

In The Stinger, Fred washes up and gets in bed… the bed of the vampire, enraged that he's doing this again.

This Episode contains examples of:

  • Ascended Extra: Judge Roy Spleen gets a much larger role here than in "Home of the Ancients".
  • Breakout Character: Fred became wildly popular after his debut here. Fred was heavily used in Cartoon Network's summer 2006 promos, had merchandise, and this episode had a special primetime rerun.
  • The Cameo: Eris, Mindy, Scooby-Doo, and Dr. Ghastly testify against Mandy. Yogi Bear makes a cameo in the musical number.
  • Continuity Nod: Lil' Porkchop from the episode of the same name reappears. Though he's physically in good shape despite what happened to him. Mentally, not so much. Wiggy-Jiggy Jed from "Dream Mutt" is mentioned as all that's left is his hat.
  • Courtroom Episode: Follows a lawsuit between Billy and Mandy over who gets to maintain ownership of Grim.
  • Crowd Song: The entire courtroom gets in on the song near the episode's end.
  • Downer Ending: Judge Spleen can't find it in his heart to break up Billy, Mandy and Grim, so rather than assigning custody of Grim to either of them, he places Billy under house arrest so they'll never be separated. Parodied in that he sees this as a gesture of kindness. This deal ends up benefiting only Mandy, who now has full custody of Grim.
  • Even Evil Can Be Loved: Mandy's parents specify they do love her, but are utterly terrified of her enough they don't even feel comfortable making eye contact with her if they can help it.
  • Mathematician's Answer: Fred's simple "Yes" answers the question of who gets Grim.
  • Negative Continuity: Billy's house arrest disappears after this episode, though Fred Fredburger becomes a recurring character.
  • No Celebrities Were Harmed: The blue vampire whom Fred constantly bothers sounds like Peter Lorre.
  • Obliviously Evil: Mandy apparently had no clue her parents are terrified of being anywhere near her until Billy calls them to the stand.
  • Raised by Wolves: Averted, as Mandy's parents stopped a pack of wolves from kidnapping a young Mandy and doing this.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech; Billy's testimony against Mandy is, in a way, a huge one for Mandy, as he brings her family, enemies, and people who had the misfortune of meeting her.
  • Reset Button: Billy's family is forced to stay when Judge Roy Spleen orders them under house arrest.
  • Ship Tease: Judge Roy proceeds to start the court session off with asking Billy if he can take Mandy as his lawfully wedded wife, which prompts Billy to excitedly say that he does. He's about to ask Mandy a similar type of question before he gets reminded that he's not at a wedding.
  • Shout-Out: One of the people who testifies against Mandy is Scooby-Doo.
Scooby-Doo: She made fun of the way I walk! I mean, look at me! I'm a stinking dog!
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!: Billy gives this to Mandy when he calls the witnesses who testify against her and she sure takes it well.
  • The Snack Is More Interesting: Fred seems more concerned about finding something to eat (preferably nachos) during court than carefully paying attention to the lawsuit.
  • The Thing That Would Not Leave: Fred brushes his teeth and goes to bed. But we see it's not his bed, it's the bed of the blue vampire he annoyed all day.
Pale Ghoulish Juror: How many times do I have to tell you this is MY HOUSE?!!!
  • Toilet Humor: This episode relishes on this, especially with Fred Fredburger.
  • The Unreveal: It’s never revealed who the jurors believe Grim belongs to at the end of the song.
  • Villainous Breakdown: After Billy's testimony against Mandy proves to be a huge Reason You Suck Speech to Mandy, Billy continues to taunt her about it. Subsequently, Mandy turns animalistic and bites Billy's finger, thus a fight between them ensues.
