A Plot: Murray is dead set on having Erica attend his alma mater, Penn State University, and sets up an admissions interview for his daughter. Erica intentionally bombs the interview so her parents would have no choice but to approve her preferred college, Carnegie Mellon University. But Erica soon receives a rejection letter from Carnegie Mellon, making Penn State her only option left. Not to worry: Murray is a Penn State alumnus, so he will be able to smooth things over with the admissions official. The only problem is, Murray never graduated from Penn State, falling one credit short. Angry that Murray pushed college on her when he never even graduated, Erica tries to fulfill her dream of becoming famous by singing on the street in the rain. Murray visits and apologizes for being a hypocrite, and they make up.

B Plot: Adam and Pops make a date to see the Batman (1989) movie starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Barry badly wants to be included, but when they get to the theater, Pops and Adam take two seats in a row with no other seats available, forcing Barry to sit way up front by himself. Adam loves the movie, but Pops isn't thrilled because it isn't like the old Batman (1966) TV series starring Adam West. Seizing the opportunity, Barry tries to drive a wedge between Adam and Pops' friendship by taping Adam badmouthing the old Batman series and locking Adam in his room to prevent him from stopping him. When Barry shows Pops the video however, Pops sees it as an obvious ploy for his attention. Upset that his plan failed, Barry complains that Adam monopolizes all of Pops' time, and he always feels left out. To make it up, Adam and Pops ask Barry to play a villain in a Batman movie they are creating.

  • Bedsheet Ladder: Adam makes one to escape from his room after Barry locks him in, only for it to come loose while he's using it and drop him onto the ground.
  • Dutch Angle: As an homage to the Adam West series, The Tag has Adam, Pops, and Beverly recreate a wall-climbing scene, with Pops getting tired and just walking "down" the wall at the end.
  • Gray Rain of Depression: The climax of the A Plot, when Erica is absolutely fed up with Murray's hypocrisy and trying to prove her own merits, is set outside during a rainstorm.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Barry ends up revealing that his actions were fueled by envy; while he doesn't enjoy the same hobbies as them, preferring things like bicycle stunts, he still felt bad at not having the kind of connection that Adam and Pops have. In the end, they decide to compromise, letting Barry not only play the Joker in their movie, but also showing interest in Barry's hobbies by having the Joker's vehicle be a stunt bicycle.
  • Hypocrite: Murray, who pushed Erica to attend Penn State despite not actually graduating from it himself.
  • Hypocritical Humor: After being rejected from Carnegie Mellon, Erica tracks down the Penn State representative to his car in a parking garage, slams paperwork on his windshield, and yells that she's not as crazy as she appeared in the original interview when he tries to escape from her current crazy behavior.
  • Roadside Wave: Erica ends up getting hit by a few, due to playing guitar on a sidewalk during a heavy rain.
  • You Are Better Than You Think You Are: When Murray goes to pick up Erica while she's singing roadside and absolutely drenched from the rain and Roadside Waves, Erica asks him why he isn't tearing into her about responsibility or managing expectations. Murray points out that, by saying that, Erica proves she's already taken those lessons to heart, and that he just wants what's best for her.
